A Shadow of a Drought

After capturing a new Cyndaquil for the team, Ash is almost to Azaela Town, ready to get his second badge. However, before he can do that, he comes across a part of the town where the townfolk are depressed! Seems they live by Slowpoke, and someone's stolen them all! While trying to get to the bottom of things, Ash and company find a giant Slowpoke! Wait, he's not a giant Slowpoke, he's Kurt, the PokéBall maker!

Comments: If you look carefully, you can see that the guy in the Slowpoke outfit is Kurt before he takes his hood off. Of course, anyone who's played the games knew already beforehand. :P I wish more of the cities had mini-storylines like this, in both the games and the anime.

Gonig Apricorn!

After meeting up with Kurt, Ash gives him the G/S Ball to study. In return, Kurt invites Ash to gather special Apricorns so that he can make special Poké Balls for them, and gives each of the group a Fast Ball. Kurt's granddaughter takes them to a tour of the forest, where Ash and Misty grab a Blue Apricorn (Used to make Lure Balls) and Brock gets a Brown Apricorn (Used to make Heavy Balls). While exploring, they come across a small group of Pineco, and Team Rocket attacks! Brock saves a Pineco while Pikachu has to face off against Team Rocket's latest scheme!

Comments: It is this episode that Brock captures his first Pokémon since Season 1 (Vulpix)! And except for Zubat's & Pineco's evolutions, this is the last time he'll catch a Pokémon until Lotad comes along in Advanced Generation! Also, IIRC, Tracey makes his first Johto cameo.

Gettin' the Bugs Out!

Finally, it's time for Ash's second Johto League Gym Battle! Misty is immediately freaked out, as the Gym Leader, Bugsy, uses Bug-types all the time. Even though he no longer has Charizard, Ash is confident that Cyndaquil can do the job. Things go afoul early, as Cyndaquil is taking way too long to get warmed up. Can Chikorita and Pikachu pick up the slack? Can Metapod actually put up a fight?

Comments: This episode is unique in that a Metapod does something besides sit there and Harden. Of course, the anime version of Bugsy's Metapod was signifacantly harder to beat than the game version. :P This is also the last time the G/S Ball is seen or heard from again.

NOTES

This season is the 4th American season and covers the end of the Orange Islands and the first 1/3 of Johto.
Due to an encore presentation of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends on Thursday, only 3 episodes this week.
Say bai-bai to the G/S Ball, it leaves for good this week.
All the episodes are based on events that happen in the video games.
Ash gains his second Johto League Badge, giving him 14 Badges total.
This is the last time Ash meets, battles, and defeats the Gym Leader in the same episode. From here on out, there's always a set-up episode before the actual battle.
Ash's team currently is: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Heracross, Cyndaquil, and Chikorita.
Misty's team currently is: Togepi, Staryu, Poliwag, Goldeen, Psyduck
Brock's team currently is: Onix, Geodude, Zubat, Vulpix, Pineco

Slowpoke sure get a lot of episodes to themselves and this one was pretty average but at least Kurt is introduced and a storyline is about to be wrapped up but I don't know I just didnt like this

:( this is one thing I really don't like about Johto :( its just filler to meet, help, and befriend these people like any other trainer they meet in filler episodes

I really wish they hadn't just forgotten about the whole GS Ball concept.

Oh, forgot to mention it up above, but we never see Ash & Misty's Fast Balls, nor Brock's Heavy Ball, again for the rest of the series.

todays episode would have been a whole lot better if the apricorn stuff had been recurring like berries are but no this is the last we ever here of them (much like the gs ball) so all the explanations were drawn out and boring! Brock catching Pineco seemed pretty random as well  I never played the games but I'd bet this stuff were a lot less boring in them

okay now todays was a good episode! the gym battle was back and forth all the way through with Chikorita doing good and her victory hug was cute :) Cynaquil was real good to! Bugzy was a good gym leader and those sillys almot left town without getting their new balls! there was a dumb error that stuck out "I'll save Chikorita for later" that was right after Chikorita was knocked out  one good episode during this short week :(

Even though none of this week's episodes were filler, they were still all sort of dull.

But I saw The Superhero Secret again this morning, and I must say - Latoya had nice pants. >:]

Things should be better next week, as a certain zany blue blob joins Team Rocket...
