I know 2 Stupid Dogs is a CN show, but it DID have a brief run on CBS in the early 90's, so...does anyone remember?

It was on TBS. And it was genius. Of all the animated series I wish would be released on DVD, The Tick is first, but 2 Stupid Dogs is second, if not tied for first. Aww, isn't that cute? :p

There is no one I know that can't laugh at a 2 Stupid Dogs cartoon...especially the "Red" trilogy. Little Dog licking the cold porridge and getting his tongue stuck was classic.

The Brady Bunch parody was the episode that drew me into this series. This series was basically like Ren & Stimpy, only with dogs, and a lot funnier. They got away with a LOT for a syndicated kid's cartoon.

Isn't that the episode where Greg and his sister made out (Yeah, I know I'm shocked they could get away with that on a kid's show) But you have to remember back when 2SD was around, Barely anyone knew what CN was! So they could get away with a lot more.

Yeah, but 2SD was airing in syndiciation (as part of the soon to be defunct Funtastic World of Hanna Barbera block) on the channel that would be home to UPN in just a few short years on a weekday morning.

That's a good one to be drawn by, especially if you're a Brady Bunch fan. They did such a great job with that parody.

And when the father asks the kids what they learned at the end, that's really something a Brady fan would get a kick out of. :)

Yeah, I agree. "Know how you can tell they're boy dogs?" That's gotta be the most surprising scene I've ever seen on a "children's" show.

Syndication generally lets you get away with more since there's no network BS&P breathing down your neck, just the markets that want to buy the show. It's like when Tiny Toons had the cartoon where Buster, Plucky and Hamton got drunk....it passed in syndication(and on Fox apparently), but no other network that carried it would allow the episode.

Liked it. It used to be on CN. I'd mostly watch it for the Secret Squirell shorts, though. At my age when I watched it, my elders were telling me to stop watching the show since it had the word "stupid". I liked it, but I never knew why it was pulled off. Or never see the characters in the animations before CM break (mostly during normal hours, not blocks).

I should ask if anyone remembered of the animated version of Beetlejuice that was on Nick a long time ago....since people are asking for older series here.

Beetlejuice got tossed around a lot between networks in it's run of 94 episodes. It started on ABC, ran for 3 seasons (It started to air on Fox in the third season), went to Fox with new episodes for two seasons (one 65 episode season, then a season of repeats of both Fox and ABC episodes), then after that, it went to Nickelodean for a while, then Cartoon Network picked it up for about a year or two. After that, it just seemed to slide into cartoon oblivion.

I DON'T think CN PRODUCED 2SD, 2SD had a run on TBS and got halfway through, before moving to CN and completing its run there, so basically CN just ACQUIRED 2SD, sort of how AS ACQUIRED Family Guy.

You're exactly right (and I mentioned it being on TBS earlier on ;)). That's where I discovered the show. EDIT: As far as I know, the entire series was shown on TBS, even if it was acquired at some point. The only episode I don't remember seeing on TBS was "Pie in the Sky." Anyway, I don't have Cartoon Network, but I've also seen the show on the Canadian channel Teletoon.

All the cat/dog cartoons have catchy themes (Even the DREADFUL Schnookums & Meat)
While I could never agree in a million years that Schnookums and Meat was dreadful, I do wholeheartedly agree about the theme! It was done by The Hellecasters and got me hooked on their music. They're an instrumental band that does rock, country, rockabilly, jazz, blues...well, a bunch of styles. I have three of their CDs and a concert video, all because of Schnookums and Meat. :D I wrote to one of the guys and he thought it was cool that I discovered them via the show.

Yay, I'm not crazy!

Shnookums and Meat sounds very familiar but I can't remember ever seeing it :(

Those secret squirrel cartoons were awesome, my favorite was probably Greg, about the evil gingerbread man, esspecially his warped origin story. The art-stealing chameleon, Dr. O and the bee queen were all cool too, though. Heck, all the characters were cool.

Schnookums & Meat was a Disney show about an orange cat and a blue dog and they were basically a BAD, bad poor imiation of Ren & Stimpy, though the SHOW itself DID deliver a few laughs with the sideshow cartoons called Pith Possum and then there was one with a cowboy, those two toons were funny even though the title stars were not. Does anyone have the Schnookums & Meat theme to Download, that one was catchy too!

All the cat/dog cartoons have catchy themes (Even the DREADFUL Schnookums & Meat)It's funny. Even though I haven't seen the show in about 9 years, and I didn't even like the show, I still remember the Schnookums & Meat Funny Cartoon Show theme pretty much perfectly. It was quite good. Heck, they could've just had the theme play for 22 minutes, and it would've improved the show ;). Best part of the music, as I remember, played when various characters were getting random objects hucked at their heads.

the sideshow cartoons called Pith Possum and then there was one with a cowboy
Pith Possum was a very good parody of Batman and, at times, Superman, with Obadiah the squirrel as his sidekick. There was one episode where Peter Possum (the real Pith, a la Clark Kent) went on a date with Doris Deer, who was the Lois Lane of the show. But every time they started talking, the Pith signal would flash in the sky, so he'd have to leave to fight crime. He'd come back more and more beat up each time and she had no idea why. :p

They also did a great homage to the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoon "The Mechanical Monsters," where the robots were big wooden sap suckers who stole a precious hardened sap exhibit. Doris got inside one of the monsters, as Lois Lane had, and was flown to the bad guy's (Dr. Paul Bunyan) lair. Each episode also had a name having something to do with darkness or black, like "Night of Blacker Darkness" and such.

The cowboy was Tex Tinstar. It wasn't as good as Pith Possum, but they did have the cool idea of setting it up like the old serials, where each week would end with a cliffhanger. I also loved the character of Floyd the rattlesnake, who sounded like Jerry Lewis and had his own laugh track.

Finding the theme to Schnookums and Meat would probably be very hard, as it is much more obscure than even 2 Stupid Dogs is. It's worth a shot, though.

The Hellecasters (John Jorgensen, Jerry Donahue and Will Ray) are the guys who did the theme and if you wanna hear songs by them that are similar to the Schnookums theme, check out "Orange Blossom Special" (could be called 'music to speed by' :D), "Inspector Gadget" (great jazzy tune with cool harmonies) and "Mad Cows at Ease" (fast and funny). Unfortunately, they can't release the Schnookums theme because it's owned by Disney.

2 Stupid Dogs, Cartoon Planet and Schnookums & Meat are all shows I have on tape, but those tapes are really wearing out. Since I doubt they'll ever be released on DVD, I really must try and make my own someday. I needs me a video capture card!

2 Stupid Dogs really deserves a DVD release. It marked a new direction for Hanna Barbera, and its art style can be seen in many of their series, including Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab (why has nothing other than a couple of VHS tapes been released?!) and Samurai Jack. I can totally understand how there would definitely be trepidation on their part in doing so, as it is a somewhat obscure show that a lot of people either don't remember well, or thought was dumb (possibly because they just haven't watched it lately ;)).

To set the record straight, I just went and checked my tape for the details (yes, I'm a huge fan of the show, in case no one realized. Haha.)

The cartoon is called "Cartoon Canines." It's about Bob K's Kartune Camp, where the dogs are taught the fine art of cartoons by their drill sargeant, who appears to be a giant purple cat (yes, the teeth are big, but not walrus big. He also has no mustache. ;)).

He tells them to get in proper cartoon attire. First, the small dog is dressed as The Little Mermaid, Ariel, and big dog is dressed as Eric, Ariel's boyfriend/husband. The sargeant see's this and says "no cutesy in my corps! Only funny cartoons! You know, lots of butt jokes!"

They then try other things, such as Beany & Cecil ("Too Beany!"), aliens in a spaceship ("Too out there!"), microscopic lifeforms ("Too in there!") and then finally, as obvious parodies of Ren & Stimpy ("Too diseased!").

Then big dog dresses in a red tie and a hat with a flower in it, and little dog has on a huge baseball cap and sneakers. The sarge then says "Ahhh, classic cartoon attire! I'll call you Hammy and Loafy!"

And yes, the ending was very weird! :p

Spongebrain2.0
08-15-2004, 09:54 PM
What was the ending?

Good Ol' Batmanuel!
08-15-2004, 10:32 PM
Sarge splits in two, and inside is a sort of atomic nucleus dealy. Then it flies away with a monkey named Sasha. Big dog, little dog and Sarge's sidekick (who controls the cartoons with computers) are sitting in the control room completely stunned (as we are). Then out of the blue, little dog says to the sidekick "so, you wanna come over for a sandwich or something?" and the sidekick says "sure." And that's it. Weird, but I love it. :)

Though John Kricfalusi (creator of Ren & Stimpy) was never involved with 2 Stupid Dogs, I think this episode was the most direct in spoofing him, or even taking a shot at him. There's Bob K's Kartune Camp (like John K) and then obviously, the Ren & Stimpy parody in it. "Cartoon Canines" and "The Rise and Fall of the Big Dog," which is similar in its extreme over-the-topness, are by far the most bizarre of the series. I don't know if John K was ever directly involved with the show in any way, but his influence was definitely felt (or mocked. I dunno :p) in those two episodes.

Does anyone remember these episodes?:

1) The two were trying to make a soup, so they started spitting at a big bowl...a bowl as big as big as a house.
2) Crazy version of Little Red Riding Hood.
3) This time when the smaller dog tried getting the bigger dog into positions for the toliet. Don't ask.
4) The bigger one was stuck in a fence, and the other one got ice cream.

"Bathroom Humor" was simply about Big Dog trying to find a place to let it free, he is about to go on the ground but Little Dog screams, "NOOO, WE LIVE HERE!!!" and insists he pee inside a house. They go in the house, and then a lot of weird stuff happens that must be a parody of a movie I haven't seen or something. The "toilet positions" gag someone mentioned up there is also in this cartoon, it's another "how did they get away with that" gag, as it clearly states boys stand up and girls sit down.

And guess what? JOHN K. HAS A CREDIT IN THE SHOW! That guy up there was wrong. On each part of the "Red" trilogy his name is in the title card. It says, "Tidbits of poor taste supplied by John Kricfalusi." Some might just claim it's fake, but there were never any fake names on the titles.

I'm guessing you're joking, there was NO episode with a stripper.
Sorry dude, but there was. Maybe the show was a little more randy than you remember. ;)

In the episode "Door Jam," the big dog is chewing on a tin can. Little dog crashes into him, and the can rolls down the street and eventually, into a supermarket. They're sitting outside the store looking at the can on the other side of the door, trying to figure out how to get inside. Then people walk past them and the doors open when they step on a pressure sensitive mat that opens the door automatically. When they stand on it, they're not heavy enough to activate it.

Eventually, little dog gets this idea that it's really the fact that the people are wearing shoes that gets the door to open. And so, they both go to various places trying to get shoes. One of the places they go is a strip club where we see a woman from behind (in shadow) waving her bra around. Little dog is looking at her feet, excitedly saying "the shoes, the shoes!" She kicks her foot out, her high heeled shoe comes off, and knocks little dog off his chair.

It kinda reminds me of how single-minded he can be. In the episode "Spit Soup," they're at a deli with the prospect of eating all the meat they want. In other words, dog heaven. :p But instead, little dog says "I'm having soup!" Big dog starts drooling, and he becomes obsessed with getting a bucket to collect the drool in. They both start chanting "a bucket, a bucket, a bucket..." The deli owner says "how 'bout a bucket full of meat?!," which he then gives them. Little dog throws away all the t-bones, hams, etc...and sticks the bucket under big dog's mouth. The deli guy gets fed up with them and throws them out.

Yes and they also cut a scene from "Hut Rut Saw". I remember when Rocko and his friends were picking for berries and there was a bear standing there, and one of them accidentally pick his nuts and he did something very painful to them lol. I saw the edited version of this episode on Nicktoons TV maybe once. I wish that damn channel wouldn't only air select episodes of shows. It's hella annoying.
