View Full Version : Best cartoon placed in New Jersey is...

There are three cartoons I know of that have one thing in common: They all take place in the great place we all know as New Jersey! But which of these Garden State cartoons do you like the best? Let's find out:

Megas XLR: In the future, a high tech mecha is Earth's only hope, and it has been blown back to our time along with its pilot. However, the robot has now been thrown into the hands of two idiot slackers. Is there hope for the future? Either way, I think we're screwed.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The story about a detective agency consisting of a giant idiot milkshake, a floating bag of fries with facial hair, and a stinky lump of ground dead animal. Their mission? Who the hell knows? All they do is annoy the hell out of their overweight, hairy neighbor.

Clerks: The unseen genius that never had a chance. It had everything that pretty much defined the 90s: slackers, pop culture, sex, and the immortal stoner duo. Too bad the idiot network bought the show withouth knowing the source material. A true treasure that makes everyone wonder what kind of monkeys run TV anyways.

These are your choices. Tell us which you like, and why.

Clerks or Megas. They actually make references to New Jersey quirks and places instead of ATHF, which just kind of says it's in New Jersey and doesn't back it up otherwise with stuff like food, locales, living conditions in a state filled with dying industrial towns, the DMV from Hell that will never improve no matter how much the governor feels it has, etc.

(And yes, I live in New Jersey. I appreciate it if someone who's poking fun at the state knows a thing or two about it.)

I had to say Megas, because I never even knew ATHF took place in Jersey. I think I heard once but it never really stuck in my head. Plus, when I saw this thread before evn seeing the choices I though Megas XLR.:)

Clerks, baby! And Leonardo, NJ actually exists. ;)

ATHF, I never really watched Megas and I've never seen Clerks.

I like both Megas XLR and Clerks, but I have to go with Megas. Clerks is good if you like the raunchy sense of humour in the show, but it's not something you can share with those that don't enjoy that. On the other hand, Megas takes it's influence from Clerks, but is something that a wider audience can enjoy.

I have to ask, have you even seen the Clerks animated series? The movie was up to Kevin Smith's normal standards of raunchiness, of course, but the cartoon was toned down to ABC TV standards and couldn't get away with anything too terribly risque, and as such relied much more heavily on non-sequitur wackiness and pop culture references rather than anything "raunchy." Example: even in the episode in which Leonardo Leonardo gets sick after eating some questionable burritos, the plot goes off into an Outbreak parody rather than making any of the obvious diarrhea jokes. Plenty of funny, but very little raunch.

Anyway, look at my avatar and then decide who you think I voted for. (-: All three are good shows, but Megas is still working out the kinks (the action is usually good fun, but the humor sometimes falls flat) and ATHF, while often hilarious, is very hit-or-miss, especially in the later episodes. Clerks, on the other hand, was A+ from the beginning and never really had time to become uneven. Six episodes of pure unadulterated comic goodness.

Yes, I've seen it. I have the DVD set. :D Perhaps "raunchy" was the wrong term to use. All I was trying to say was that it's not a cartoon I can share with everyone, either because they don't enjoy the type of humour in Clerks, or because of age (I'm not letting my 10 year-old niece borrow the DVD). It's a great cartoon, but I'm finding that I enjoy Megas XLR a lot more.

ATHF. Clerks is just okay, only about half the series was good (3/6). Haven't caught Megas yet.

I gotta go with Clerks: TAS. I would say ATHF because I liked it slightly better, but they hardly ever mention New Jersey and I have never seen Megas XLR.

OMG BEAR DRIVE CAR?!?!?! :D

I went with ATHF. Haven't seen Megas, did see Clerks. Agree, though, re: the lack of NJ specific references in ATHF (besides Carl being the stereotypical depiction of someone from NJ re: his speaking voice and one episode referring to the Jersey state lottery)...

ATHF cause Clerks only had 6 episodes to choose from and Megas XLR is a travesty.

Clerks never had the chance to become the hit that it should have.

ATHF doesn't really mention New Jersey enough for anyone to realize it's located here. Yes, I live in New Jersey, where the weak are killed and eaten.

As per Megas, never saw it, so I shan't comment........

I've never really seen the appeal of Clerks: The Animated Series. I remember watching the series and thinking "What is this? This is Kevin Smith? This is what everyone has been talking about?" I think I got a few laughs scattered through the six episodes, but most of the time, I was just kinda bored.

I'm a fan of Kevin Smith, and I like cartoons with an odd sense of humor, but this one just didn't do it for me at all.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I don't care for Megas XRL, and while Clerks: TAS is a funny show it just doesn't tickle me the way ATHF does.

Toxic Crusaders. Toxie lived in Tromaville, New Jersey. God I loved Toxic Crusaders it was one of my favourite cartoons as a kid.

ATHF.

I would've gone with Clerks if it lasted a bit longer.

Clerks and ATHF are two very solid shows. MEGAS is a criminal hate crime against slacker comedy, and it should be sentenced to death for what it has done to people's standards and senses of humor. Sigh.

Heh, I remember that cartoon. Possibly the highest budgeted thing Troma has ever done.

This is hard for me. Megas is my #3 favorite Toonami show right now (behind Gundam SEED & Duel Masters), while ATHF is my favorite Adult Swim Comedy Original, and Clerks: TAS just rocks.

But Megas managed to make to fun of New Jersey AND Philadelphia in a single episode, so it gets my pick. (If only it'd make fun of the Virginias and Delaware, I'd be joyous.)
