View Full Version : Exercise!
In honor of post #500, I thought I'd start a thread. What do you do to try and get in shape?
Me, I do a lot of walking. Well, OK, it's because I don't have a car, but it's a ten minute walk to work and since I live downtown, I can walk to restaurants, the grocery store and the mall- no need to take the bus. I also do push-ups and sit-ups every night- I've always been kinda thin and it's helping me get a little more strength.

I have a car but hate enduring the Boston traffic to drive to work, so I make a 15 minute walk to the subway everyday.
I also have a membership at a nearby YMCA so I go there twice a week to work out. :)

I do a little karate and running. I am trying to become flexible because I'm really stiff. But for someone who's really stiff, I can do a lot of cartwheels and flips.

Well, considering that I'm trying to lose weight, I try and exercise a fair amount. I play softball, but the season's over, so I have to get in other exercise. I do weight programs from magazines (like Self or Shape) in order to shed inches and I have a walking/running schedule I also got out of a magazine. I do it on the treadmill, where I watch dvds as I run:p I also started to ride my bike a little bit more often as well.

I ride horses mostly now. A lot of people don't think that riding is excersize, but it's great for building strength in your legs and abdominal muscles, and if you're riding a really headstrong horse it gives your arms and back a workout, too. In my sophomore year of high school, I ran on the cross-country team, but my strength is sprinting, so I burned out easily in meets. Needless to say I don't do much running anymore!
Recently I've discovered badminton and tennis, so hopefully I'll be playing more of those sports. And of course, there's yoga and walking.
I play basketball. For three hours. Everyday. Full-court, half court, you name it. Thats alot of running and sweating, I swear to god I think I lose five pounds everyday, but its fun.
Me, I do a lot of walking I don't believe in walking, hell I don't even walk to my car.:D

I have just started exercising again after being so busy with a summer class. I have been biking. Other times I walk on the treadmill and swim.

Last year my work was a five mile walk from my dorm room, and I'd do that four times a week, and sometimes back if I didn't get off past midnight. Currently, I walk, jog (somewhat) and dance.

I'm an avid swimmer so I go to the local pool 2-3 times per week in the summer during adult swim. This year I've started going with one of my high school friends. Also, I usually try to go to the local fitness center every Friday night. And finally, I've played a few softball games this summer (not serious competition, just friendly games between local churches).
The school year is a bit tougher to exercise, what with the homework and all, and I already finished my required phy ed. class. I probably have a free YMCA pass somewhere, but I can't find it, and it probably expired.

I don't do much of anything really. However, yesterday I took part in a 9 mile canoe ride... believe me it was the most excercise I've gotten in years, and today I feel pretty darn sore

The best way to stay fit, I've found, is just to live an active lifestyle in general, so that it's not a chore. I rock-climb quite a bit, especially in the summers, and that's a good way to maintain muscle tone. I do a lot of swimming, although I've slacked off a bit on that this summer. I bike everywhere (it's my primary transportation), and I try to a lot of recreational outdoor stuff like kayaking, skateboarding, etc.
Hell, I climb trees.
Exercise- as in going to the gym and working out- is something I only do a few times a week, since I'm usually active enough so it doesn't feel like a necessity. When I do work out, I tend to run about three miles on an indoor track, do somewhere in the area of 1000 situps, and a decent amount of weightlifting. I like to do pullups, but it's hard to do a satisfying number of those. I never feel like I'm accomplishing anything, even though I probably am.

A couple months ago I started doing push ups. Started at 10 a day my arms were incredibly weak. I've gone through various cycles but I'm now doing 50 push ups 6 times a day so 300 a day. I should be up to cycles of 60 soon. I go for occasional walks too. Also it's not exercise but I make sure I'm watching what I eat.

I'm a ballet dancer, so I get alot of excersise from that each day. If by chance I don't have class (Sunday, Saturdays in the summer) I either do "The New York City Ballet Workout" DVD or hit the gym. Actually, sometimes I hit the gym even if I do have class just because it's fun.

I'll occasionally play basketball and football, and maybe do a little bike riding. But my main activity is weightlifting... 13 different exercises spread over 3 or 4 days per week at the gym.
I'm not a huge, hulking guy, though. I don't take any steroids or high-profile supplements... just protein shakes and bars for me (in addition to other protien-rich foods).
Still, I'm edging closer to benchpressing 315 pounds comfortably (without help). I'm stuck at pressing 285 now, but I'm making progress... I can be proud of that. :)

i burn about 3000 calories daily with my routine thumb exercises. other than that, i ride bike for about 2-3 miles and follow that up with some bench pressing (i can only do like 140 lbs right now  ) and then i do 20 push ups and then 50 crunches

day 1: bench press, cable crossover, incline bench press, press downs, french curls, bicep curls
day 2: leg press or squats, leg curls, leg extensions, calves, shoulder press, abs, cardio
day 3: 2x30 camber bench, decline bench, close grip bench, bicep curls, abs
day 4: low back, chins, vertical row, front lat pull, abs, cardio
day 5: 2x30 leg press, leg curls, leg extensions, calves, abs
day 6: seated row, pull ups, front lat pull, shoulder shrugs, cardio
that's the workout I'm supposed to be doing, but I'm lucky if I get through half of it before I get tired and quit.
Regular exercize combined with correct eating, and after age 21, just to be safe, could,(check with a doctor) taking one half of asprin a day, (I say could, because it has not been proven yet) reduce heart disease 50%.. Eating low fat food, combined with foods high in antioxidants , (stuff in food, that helps the body fight off disease) can be very helpful..Regular exercize..30 -45 minutes a day will not only build up the heart muscle itself, it will create extra pathways (arteries, veins, and capallaries) around the heart which will allow the heart to beat less, in addition to become a stronger muscle itself. By beating less, and stronger, it will last longer, in a healthier state.
What is regular exercise? Yea, pretty simple, walking. Nothing fancy, good shoes are necessary, moderate to a brisk pace. To get the exercise effect, it should be continuous, but there is some question on this, one study said you could break it into 2 sections. I am not sure about that...I have been there, and back, I have had to learn about this.My heart surgery was and still is successful, but I urge everyone to exercise to prevent going thru any kind of surgery, if that is possible..Stuart

I only really walk for excesize or go on the swings at the park. I'm EXTREMELEY cynical when it comes to team sports. I hate it when I get hit by a ball and have a violent reaction whenever I get hit. I'd ather read a state atlas or play on the computer but that is just the way I am. I also hate biking. I'm always scared of falling off and losing a whole lot of blood. I have bad balance when it comes to skates, bikes, sufboard and skateboards.

Exercise and working out has been a foreign concept to me for hte past few months now. Sure I did Cross Country and Track, but then again that's not really much now. Hopefully it won't be so foreign when I go into college.

Phantasm, I'm the same as you. I'm lazy. I don't like exercising. Not that I don't enjoy certain sports and activites (ie, skiing, basketball, swimming/diving). But actual, go out for express purpose of burning calories... ick. I've been walking more. As the weather has gotten bearable (humidity is way down), I'm going to start walking in the neighborhood again. But just little things, like parking far away in the parking lot, is about as close as I currently get to anything remotely resembling exercise.

I usually just walk in the afternoon with my mom and the dog when it is not so hot. Before we arrive home we stop at the nearby park where I run with the dog so he can fall sleep all night. If he does not do anything all day he will stay up all night and will ask to be let out a million times.
I used to go to 24 hour fitness but we did not have time any more, now we do, I wish we were still memebers sometimes.

Other than some walks, I pretty much haven't done any serious exercise this summer due to all of the time I've been working. However, I'm on my feet quite at bit at one of my jobs, Lion's Choice (Roasted beef based fast food), and thus it is kind of a workout.
I did have some regular exercise going last summer and I plan to get back into it again in about a week here. Although it sort of evolves over time, it currently looks like this:
Day A
Crunches; Hip Extension; Deadlift; Leg Extension; Calf Raises; Hamstring Curl; Squats; Lunges
Day B
Crunches; Barbell Bench Press; Dumbell Bench Press; Barbell Pullover; One Arm Dumbell Row; Overhead Tricep Extension; Skullcrushers; Tricep Kickback
Day C
Crunches; Shoulder Press; Lateral Shoulder Raise; Rear Shoulder Raise; Shoulder Shrugs; Standing Biceps Curl; Preacher Curl; Reverse Curl; Wrist Curls

I usually go to a workout club once every couple of days during the summer. During the school year, I still do that, but I also try to join some intramural sports teams at the university.
Walking around the campus going from class to class also works as exercise to an extent.

I used to do cardio for 30 minutes 3 times a week. But, I'm not sure if it really helped me that much. This summer I stopped doing cardio since I was away from school and I didn't want to pay for a gym membership, but I've been eating a lot less since I'm away from the all you can eat cafeteria at school. I've been doing abs every other day in an attempt to get my stomach in shape. I seem to be getting a thinner stomach, but it's still not at the point I want it to be. You know it's weird, the sides of my stomach are really muscular, and you can feel and see the rock hard muscles. The top of my stomach near my chest is also rather muscular. I wonder if that has to do with doing pushups? Cause my chest is rather big and muscular as well. However, the bottom of my stomach sticks out and is flabby. I just can't seem to get it in shape, so I guess I definitely need to try something different.
I basically do exercises I've learned from other people that really make my abs feel like they're being worked. A friend of mine showed me this exercise where you flatten your stomach lift your legs and then lift your shoulders a little off the ground so you feel your abs being worked. Then you hold your arms straight parallel to the floor and move them up and down. Basically you'll look like a beached walrus. You keep on doing this for about 1 minute. I usually do this about 4 times.
Another exercise that another friend of mine showed me is where you have your feet flat on the ground and your hands folded on your chest. Then you lift your feet and your shoulders together and fold your knees so the back of your hands should feel the top of your leg. Then you slowly bring it down. I do 4 sets of about 20 of these.
Anyway, this is actually a pretty intense workout for my abs and my abs do feel tired afterwards but I still think I need to do maybe one more ab exercise. I'm not sure what though. The obvious choice would be situps but I've always heard situps are hard on your back. I suppose I could do regular crunches, but I've never been able to feel anything from those. Maybe the problem is I'm not sure how to do them properly. I mean, there's so many ways to do them. Some people put their hands behind their head, others put them on their chest, others put them on their legs. I'm kind of hesitant to do anything that I haven't been properly shown by someone else as I hear you can do more harm than good if you improperly do an exercise.

In order to lose weight thru cardio, you need cardio workouts(somple walking is enough) 6 days a week, recommended 40-45 minutes..Yes, Your chest and arms, are strong due to the push ups, as you correctly stated, but the bottom of the stomach is due to over eating..I have been there, so here is the story: Count calories, 1300 a day will lose you one pound a week, and that stomach will gradually go away..No, it will not go away right away, sorry, If you are 30 pounds overweight, it will go away in 30 weeks..then you can go back to some kind of "normal" diet..2200-2400 caleries a day, depending on height.. Further, do not, not, go on any scale, more than once a week...even then fluctuations in intake in salt, and other foods will cause an uneven weight loss..so, one week you will lose 2 pounds, the next week, even though you have made a great effort, there may show a half pound increase,,it is only water weight..Over the long haul, you will lose the weight if you keep to it.. Now, How do I know, I once weighd over 210 pounds, and now weigh about l60. Kept the weight off for about 10years...It isn't easy, there are many books on the subject, they are doing Carbs now. But for me, it was counting calories, exercize, and eating more vegtables...GOOD LUCK Stuart:)

45 minutes 6 times a day!!!! I think I'd have a heart attack if I did it that much! But, doesn't cardio also depend on how fast you do it? I'd go pretty fast on the treadmill. I ran about 30 minutes gradually increasing the speed as I went, with a 5 minute cool down. I think it usually said I burned 400 calories at the end of the workout. And boy, did that feel like an intense workout. I don't see how anyone could keep that up for 45 minutes. Now, I don't doubt that cardio helps you lose weight, the problem is I always used to eat after a workout, and I'd eat a lot of unhealthy foods. Nevertheless, I probably would still do cardio if I had a practical means of doing it, but again, the gym in my city is too far away and I don't feel like paying for a membership.
Anyway, as I said I've lost a lot of weight over the summer just from not drinking and eating less unhealthy foods. But, I don't really get how you'd count calories. I mean, if you eat a tuna sandwich how on earth would you know how many calories are in it? I mean, you'd have to know exactly how much tomato, onion, cucumber, green peppers, and whatever else is mixed in with the tuna and mayonnaise to know how many calories it is. And you'd also need to know exaclty how much mayo and tuna fish is in it. It seems pretty impossible to count calories.
Oh, and I just checked the scale, it said I weight about 163 with cloths on(no socks or shoes, just shirt and jeans). I think that's actually pretty light for a guy. But, actually I guess I shouldn't really even say I'm trying to lose weight, as I'm really trying to lose fat. Don't they say muscle weighs more than fat? I actually wouldn't mind gaining a little more weight in my biceps. I just need to get my abs toned. I've really always wanted a six pack, but have never been able to achieve it.
Anyway, how does eating more vegetables help you lose weight? I always eat a balanced diet, but I didn't think eating vegetables actually helps you burn fat. Cause if it does, I'll eat a whole ****ing head of lettuce plain.

YOur question about calories is simple..go to the library, get a book on counting caleries, there are so many. A 6 oz can of Tuna in water, six ounces, with no sauce of stuff on it contains about 200 calories Put it in a sandwhich, plain, you have about 325 calories,( I got that from a book) In fact, some books will even tell you, how many calories in a Big Mac,Look thru the books, and pick what you like,or perhaps go to www.Google.com (http://www.google.com/). and it might have the info It will take a couple of weeks to get the hang of it..then you can easily figure it out in your head..I threw my scale away years ago..I can tell how much I weigh by belt size..ps, It isn't easy, but in the long run, staying in decent shape will improve the quality and length of your life. One last thing, height is extremely important--165 lb on a 5 foot 10 inch frame, is so much better than on a 5 foot frame...Good luck.what ever you decide....Stuart p.s. stay away from trans fatty acids, and high cholesteral stuff,,,once in a while is ok, but not allways,,,My eating stuff high in transfatty acids, hurt me a lot,(we did not know about them then) latter in life...good luck again
