In this book, the Guardians get to go to a Karmilla concert, who is one of the biggest rock bands around. However, because of an argument with her mom, Will is forbidden to go. Hay Lin stays home from the concert to help take care of her sick mom. Will goes for a walk, and calls Hay Lin. Hay Lin then notices the map glowing at the stadium, and Will enters a portal using the Heart of Candracar to make herself invisible. A Metamoorian named Raven is trying to convince others to cross into the portal. She chases her dormouse into a garden, where she is pricked by black roses. She survives, and encounters Daltar, who tells her of his story and how he was forced by Phobos to create the black roses after seeing his wife and daughter turned into them. Will then takes off towards the portal, and Raven is revealed to be Cedric. Cedric has a new form that he fights Will against on the Earth side of the portal, and the audience for the Karmilla concert thinks it is just special effects. The Guardians arrive, and Cedric is forced away.

This book was disappointing for me. First off, the ending of the seventh book wanted me to see a big tense confrontation between Elyon and Phobos, but we never got that. Also, this book seemed more like filler, since all it really did was introduce us to Cedric's next form, and showed once again how Will and her mom are drifting apart.

I believe I said in the past that I thought W.I.T.C.H. would seem like a Captain Planet and Sailor Moon combination, but I see now it's not. There's something far more appropriate to compare this story arc to- Digimon season 4's Lucemon story arc, especially since it's been in reruns for so long now, that comparisons between the two are inevitable. In fact, I may nickname this story "Metamon Season 4" if the storyline continues like this, because they sure seem similar. Lucemon acquired power by absorbing the digital world's data, Phobos acquires power by acquiring the previous queens' powers. Both of them have desires to take over the world of Earth. They both have servants, Royal Knights for Lucemon, and Cedric for Phobos, that do as they are instructed by their masters. And naturally, one cannot oppose them, otherwise they will be destroyed somehow, either through absorption of data, or being turned into a black rose. Of course, both Phobos and Lucemon are based on the traditional devil character, that's for sure, and their names indicate that too (Lucemon from Lucifer, Phobos meaning "fear" in Greek) but one probably couldn't tell the difference based on the eight W.I.T.C.H. books so far. I'm seriously hoping Phobos has more to his motives than just to be the bad guy for this story. However, as long as the TV show doesn't turn into the "Will & Friends show," the way Digimon turned into the "Takuya, Koji, & Friends Show," then I'll be happy.

Well, you definitely want to read Book 10, which just came out recently in the USA. I think one issue with W.i.t.c.h. is that there are multiple storylines going on at the same time, which can confuse readers. (After all, when each issue of W.i.t.c.h. has SIXTY pages of comic story the writers can afford to run multiple storylines--which has been especially true since Book 7.) Hopefully, by the time we reach Book 12 (which is due in a couple of months) all the storylines will be neatly tied up. :)
