That's not the reason I watch it. Really, I could care less if it was popular or parents were ticked off about it.
Now if you want to know about the quality, it's always been hit and miss. There have been lame episodes since the beginning, but there have also been some truly hilarious episodes. Of course, some people just don't like that type of humor and therefore hate the show.

It turned out to be about Afghanistan and the Taliban. It was hilarious.
Was anyone else in tears during the Cartman/Osama sequence?

Ah, so that WAS it. In that case, I loved it! The Cartman/Bugs Bunny thing with Osama was the best part of it, and I loved the way it ended too.

Yeah, it started out kinda slow, but ended up being a decent episode. It never had me laughing uncontrollably, but it had some funny moments. The Bugs Bunny thing was great! Also, when both Kennys died. And the best line was, "Maybe one day we can learn to hate you, too."

A great homage to Chuck Jones and Tex Avery there--esp. with the handheld signs (particularly the rooster and the lollipop one) and Bin Laden imitating Lew Lehr (cf. Hitler in Bob Clampett's "Russian Rhapsody"). Eerie, esp. in light of the fact that a couple of Termite Terracers were asking if Bugs Bunny would come out of retirement to do something on Bin Laden reminiscent of the WWII-era shorts. Also got in a ref to the urban legend about Osama's diminutive John Thomas, and a cameo by Towelie, the worst SP character ever. Does Stevie Nicks actually resemble a goat? ;)

I had never heard the urban legend, I thought it was just a slam at him. Is it just that the small size is why he's so angry?
Yeah, he is the worst charecter ever. At least they admit it. Still his first episode was really funny. I'd even say up there with Mr. Hanky's first appearance. When he got high and punched "Funkytown" on the keypad was a classic moment.

Seems a lass poked fun at Lil' Osama in college, and drove him to seek revenge on mankind over it. The link is http://www.snopes.com/rumors/osama.htm .
As for Towelie...I got a laugh over the use of the Popeye theme every time he puffed a joint. Probably the most pointless storyline South Park ever did...but it's funny because it tried to be pointless, unlike The Simpsons, which is just pointless but thinks it's accomplishing something. It's hard to explain, but there you go.
