View Full Version : My Favorite Anime Store Is GONE!!!

I got a letter from Replay yesterday about this, and a trip to the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, NY I made today confirmed it:
My local Suncoast Video, where I was a card-carrying member of Replay, is gone. Closed! Out of business!  :(
Never again will I be able to purchase anime DVDs or manga there, or pick up the latest issues of Animerica or NewType USA (suddenly $90 for a one-year's subscription isn't sounding so expensive after all!). True, there will be Waldenbooks and Media Play for the manga and the anime, but it just won't be the same.:(
And if you think I'm the only one who's upset, how about all those Suncoast Video customers who plunked down good money to pre-order long-awaited DVDs (not just anime!) only to find they'll have to go somewhere else to pick them up.

"Anybody wanna buy a slightly used Replay card?"

Look on the bright side: Now you never have to pay retail or over retail again.
Suncoast sucks any ways. They had Cowboy Bebop session #5 for $30 once.
Man. I only shop there if I have no other choice.
Best Buy is the best place to get anime.
Awesome prices and a good selection.
If you don't have a Best Buy, I suggest www.DeepDiscountDVD.com (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/) .
AWESOME prices. Even cheaper than Best Buy.
And MUCH cheaper than anything Suncoast could sell it to you for.
And pre-order stuff at DDDVD. Guess what. That's cheaper too!

Your Replay card works at all Sam Goody, On Cue, Media Play, and Suncoast stores. So I wouldn't be so eager to get rid of it.
Besides, Media Play has much better selection than Suncoast.

It all depends on where you live. Here, Suncoast has by far the best selection around and prices are pretty good as well. Some things are suggested retail price, but some things are going to be about anywhere you go.

Do you have a Best Buy in your area, Peppe? I usually go there for anime (it's cheap and they have a big selection), but I know some places in NY don't have them. As for manga and newspapers, I always shop at Border's or B&N's since mag and manga prices tend to be uniform, and it's convenient.

And I just happened to remember they have something called "Reward Points," which is similar to Replay's "Replay Points." Sometimes, when I can't get to Best Buy, especially in the winter, I use their prices to beat the local Wal-Mart out of a buck or two (especially during the holidays!)
Edit: And maybe if I can rub a few bucks together, I can save up to buy a subscription to NewType USA and get all the goodies (free DVDs, posters, etc.) that they don't offer in the newsstand version. (I've read on another anime post that they have discontinued free DVDs due to people stealing them out of the mag.)

"It only takes one or two bad apples to spoil it for the whole bunch..."
That sucks. Both here at home and at college, Best Buy is the place to go for low prices (Starter Sets for $25? Awesome!), but Suncoast has a far better selection (Try finding a non-Seed, non-G, non-Wing Boxset at Best Buy, or finding any Mystical Ninja DVDs, or any Slayers Boxsets, or s-cry-ed boxsets, or Samurai Deeper Kyo DVDs).

(Sorry to go off on a little rant here, but I gotta....)
Ugh, Best Buy may have reasonable prices, but please don't recommend them.
They're the reason various Media Play and Suncoast stores(including the only ones in my area) where closed down. They have a bad habit of lying to investors so they can buy out the competition, close down any stores that are even a remote threat to them, and turning right around and selling the company off.
They did it to Media Play around 10 years ago just months after Best Buy opened up their local store, and then they did it about a year and a half ago to the Suncoast at the local mall(which has since been replaced by ANOTHER clothing store). A friend of mine whom was a manager for a Sam Goodies(same parent company as Suncoast) in Ohio had her store closed with no advanced warning at the same time as part of the global wipe, too.
It also doesn't help that the local BB has one of the worst anime selections I've ever seen. Now I'm stuck either shopping online(which is hard with no CC), or driving to stores over an hour away.
Okay, rant over, just had to get that off my chest.

Strange both Best Buys near me has a far better selection. Yes some of the volumes to rare series(i.e. 12 Kingdoms) can't really be found in numbers like Suncoast(I have three SC's near me) or Sam Goody(two stores near me). But Best Buy usualy is better for getting the entire collection at once. I got Arjuna for 31. But also the prices varies to store to store. One sells Blue Sub 6 Complete Collection for 31 while the other sells it for 21.

Yea, I know whatcha mean. When Best Buy owned Suncoast/Media Play/Sam Goody, they forced them to have very few sales and everything at MSRP. BB recently sold the stores though, which is why there have been so many sales and discounts recently.
Oh, and Best Buy also sells more than movies & music, so they have more to fall back upon.

Ya know I haven't been to a Best Buy in forever...
The Suncoast at King of Prussia Mall (my favorite mall) was not only closed on the most recent trip I've taken to that particular mall, but they replaced it with a Forever 21  Grr... I dislike that "Forever" store because this is the third store at the third mall I've had one of my favorites replaced by.
King of Prussia: Suncoast
Oxford Valley: That Kahuna resturant with all the arcades
Quakerbridge: The WB store
*sighs*
Oh well, at least the Quakerbridge Suncoast is still there; for now.

The KoP Suncoast is being revamped and is moving in right next to Sam Goody (I go to Cabrini, so I visit KoP often). There's always the Exton mall, which has a pretty cool Suncoast themselves.
And there IS a Best Buy about 1/4 mile away from KoP, you just have to climb a hill...

That Suncoast is just being moved to a different part of the mall? :D
Thank you so much for that info! I think I remember where the Sam Goody is; even so I have a map.

the closest thing i have to a sun coast is an FYE (and i'm pretty sure that stands for F_You're_Expensive) DBZ is usually $25, Bebop is $30 per disc, the cheapest anime is the DBZ VHS videos ($10 each)
They had the Gundam W. Complete Operations there once and it was $200 (+tax)

Peppe, I feel for you.
My favorite video store closed down late last year (they carried a good selection of material, but ordering anything special from them was hit or miss - I ordered 3 different wrestling videos that never came in, but they were top notch at getting HK movies and anime), and the only Sam Goody here is waaaaaay on the other side of town and a royal pain to get to.
(I only go out that way a handful of times a year, and guess what? The only Best Buy here is out that way, too.)
