A few animated titles are being released on DVD this week, including an initial volume of Garfield and Friends, Bill Plympton's The Tune, Rocket Power: Island of Menehune, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum Collection 1, and Galaxy Angel - Stranded Without Dessert (Vol. 3).
Probably more of interest to most of you skimming this post is the loaded special edition of Hellboy. An extended version of the film is coming later this year on DVD, but there's nothing lacking about this current set, and it's uncertain if many of the extras on this set will pop up on the director's cut. If anyone's curious, this two-disc set apparently includes a rebate if you buy the director's cut when it comes out. Among the other recent theatrical releases debuted on DVD are Ned Kelly and the critically panned The Whole Ten Yards.
Following close on Hellboy's footsteps is Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone, which is getting a special edition re-release this week. Receiving an even more lavish re-release is a VIP Edition of Showgirls. Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2, previously released on DVD by Anchor Bay under the Zombie title, is getting a bare-bones re-release from Blue Underground. A two-disc special edition was to be released this week from Shriek Show, but it's been postponed briefly. There's not much to rattle of for newly-released catalog titles this week, at least as far as ones that catch my eye go. High Art might warrant a mention, and a couple of different version of Pennies from Heaven -- one produced in 1978 for the BBC and another from 1981 -- are hitting stores.
It's a potentially pricey week for TV-on-DVD, with the release of the second seasons of Andromeda and New Avengers '77, the third season of Touch of Frost, V: The Complete Series, some of the best episodes of You Bet Your Life, and initial box sets for The Jeff Foxworthy Show, Sledge Hammer!, and Nero Wolfe. I wrote a review of A&E's first season of Nero Wolfe (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=8001) back when it was only available online. The set is being released in stores this week, and I'd really recommend checking it out.
For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=205779) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/).
So -- what are you picking up this week? I'm looking at Hellboy, Blue Underground's Zombi 2, The Devil's Backbone and the first season of Sledge Hammer!.
