View Full Version : Weekend Box Office: 'Supremacy' is supreme! 'Catwoman' is... eh.

In what may be called a tough weekend to predict, The Bourne Supremacy came in first place this weekend. Many thought Catwoman would pull it off just because. But if you thought 'Supremacy' coming in first was surprising, then it's total this weekend sure will.... $53.5 million! I thought it was a good movie and surely deserving of the total. I hope it makes more because I really want to see the third and final movie made.
Coming in second place was last weekend's number one movie I, Robot which made another $22 million and a total so far of $95.4 million.
Coming in third place was Catwoman with $17.1 million. I really do see this thing falling fast and hard next weekend. Reviews have not been kind, but I've noticed that some reviews including people here at Toonzone didn't think it was as bad as it looked. It had a budget of $100 million and another $35 million for marketing. I don't think it will make it's money back here in the states and will probably have to rely on overseas theaters.
Who would have thought Catwoman would ever beat Spider-Man 2? I sure didn't, but that's what happened. Spider-Man 2 came in fourth place with $15 million and a $328.4 million total. Sure SP2 has been out for 4 weeks, but still. ;)
And rounding out the top 5 this weekend is A Cinderella Story with $8 million and a $29.8 million total.
Things to note here, Fahrenheit 9/11 crossed the century mark this weekend making $5 million more bringing it's total now to $103.3 million.
After it's tenth week in release, Shrek 2 still continues to bring in money coming in tenth place with $2.4 million and has a total of $429.5 million. Just $2 million away from tying fourth place Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Next weekend is a big weekend as four movies, count em' FOUR new movies open up. And as always with a big weekend like that, there are sure to be at least a couple that will get lost in the shuffle.
First up is the likely number one movie for next weekend M. Knight Shyamalan's new movie, The Village. It's also Disney's fourth attempt this year to try and have a successfull movie as their first three The Alamo, Around the World in 80 Days, and King Arthur have bombed.
Next is Thunderbirds, a movie that got a lot of people excited when first greenlit, but as pictures and trailers started coming out, excitement started to die down. Based off of the story concept of the old TV show where puppets were used, this new incarnation looks like another Spy Kids type film. Oh, Ben Kingsley what have you gotten yourself into.
And for the high school/college frat boy type crowd we have Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.
And then there is the movie that I think at least will probably get lost in next weekend's shuffle, The Manchurian Candidate starring Denzel Washington.
With what's already out now and next weekend's new crop of films, it's gonna be fierce competition.
Here are your numbers...
1) The Bourne Supremacy- $53,520,000 ($53,520,000) NEW!
2) I, Robot- $22,050,000 ($95,445,000)
3) Catwoman- $17,155,000 ($17,155,000) NEW!
4) Spider-Man 2- $15,000,000 ($328,453,000)
5) A Cinderella Story- $8,040,000 ($29,814,000)
6) Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy- $7,100,000 ($71,185,000)
7) Fahrenheit 9/11- $5,000,000 ($103,356,000)
8) The Notebook- $4,450,000 ($62,500,000)
9) King Arthur- $3,064,000 ($45,198,000)
10) Shrek 2- $2,400,000 ($429,525,000)
11) DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story- $1,900,000 ($109,213,000)
12) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- $1,725,000 ($241,818,000)

Having seen Catwoman this weekend Im sorry my money was included in that total. The movie stunk big time and it surely isnt going to make a lot of money. I really should have went to see The Bourne Supremacy Im surprised it did as well as it did. The Clown Prince mentions a third and final movie. I didnt know this was a trilogy.
Glad to see I, Robot is still doing good it is by far one of the best movies out right now. Spiderman is still going strong which is pretty much expected.
As for next week there are only two movies I would even consider seeing and they are The Village and The Manchurian Candidate the others I wouldnt waste my time on.

Yep... It's a trilogy... actually it *was* a trilogy... until recently that is. The Ludlum estate granted the rights to another author to continue the story of Jason Bourne... and released about a month or so ago was... "The Bourne Legacy" by Eric Van Lustbader... so, there could be 2 more movies coming in the Bourne saga, if it all plays out right...

Hold up. You passed off Bourne Supermacy for CATWOMAN?!?
If you had to see it, at least pay for something else and sneak in. That film deserves no money at all.
*sigh* :(

Wow, I didn't know that. I knew about the three original novels. Which had to do with Bourne in a Cold War era. Of course the story was updated for today's political environment.
The first movie was meant as a stand alone movie, but after it did well, producers and the studio thought they might have a franchise. The second one appears to have started off very well. So there's hope for the third one. But after that, I hope they stop. Three movies for this character and the story itself will be enough. The third one should of course be about who he actually was and the life he lead before Treadstone.
But as Colin pointed out, with the Bourne novels being allowed to continue, who knows now.

Wow, I'm glad to see Bourne Supremacy (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=117164) do so well. I am very curious to see if it'll last another week on top or if it will follow the trend of movies this year, with one huge opening weekend than an average stay the rest of the time.
I'm not surprised Catwoman made that much. Hopefully it will fall quickly next weekend. Hopefully I, Robot, Spider-Man and Cinderella Story stick around for awhile near the top. And as usual F9/11 and Shrek 2 can't fall fast enough for me. :p

I'm surprised Catwoman did so poorly. Maybe the mainstream movie going public has better taste then I originally thought......
It's great to see Bourne Supremacy do so well, especially since I'm planing on seeing it sometime soon. I, Robot and Spider-Man 2 are also doing a good job of hanging up there too.

im surprised a cinderella story made any money at all.. or that i, robot would make blockbuster status in barely a handful of weeks.
who wants to bet if they make a 2nd batman movie after the coming new batman, they'll be putting catwoman right back into almost full pvc? cause people who like catwoman don't want to see extraordinarily showy outfits on her.
maybe king arthur should have been in dev at least two more years. until star wars and batman were well passed by, as well as this year's spiderman 2.
dodgeball sounds like a incredible surprise this siummer. i'll be shocked if they dare make a 2nd dodgeball movie.. real shocked. and disturbed.
and will ferrel hits another one out of the ballpark.

No surprises for me this week. Bourne Supremacy as Number 1 is a no-brainer for anyone who works at a video store-- I've been bombarded with requests for Bourne Identity for rent and purchase (not to mention the new DVD rerelease) for weeks, with nary a request for Batman Returns (the obvious video rental tie-in for the other new movie out this week, Catwoman).
As last week's number one, I, Robot was likewise the obvious choice for this week's number two if you took for granted that it would be supplanted. (Hey, I'm a poet and I wasn't even aware of that fact!)
Catwoman was really the only wild card, given the need to balance the horrible hype it's received with the public's predilection for poorly plotted pieces of poo (alliteration!). But this lackluster opening is also not really a big surprise-- the only question was whether it or Spidey would take the number three spot, and indeed it was a close race. Given that most everybody who wants to has already seen Spidey, though, this wasn't THAT tough to call.
Now next week's a tough call-- will the massive Bourne hype propel it into a second week at number one, or will the nearly-equivalent Shyamalamadingdong hype give the Village the edge? Your guess is as good as mine, but for the record, my money's on Bourne, with the Village opening at second, I Robot bumped down a space to number three and Harold and Kumar sneaking in around five or six or so.

I can't believe so many people felt the need to see Catwoman. It's the old spoiled milk joke I guess. But I don't even think I would catch it on DVD. I am going to see Bourne Supremacy this week.
Next weekend, the Village. And Catwoman will tank really bad by next week, with all the movies coming out, I think it will barely hold in the top ten.

catwoman opened at number three....Spider-man opened at number one, compare Catwoman's opening weekend numbers with Spider-man's.....see where I'm going with this? Spider-man will be in the top ten for a while, Catwoman will be lucky to see another week in the top 20...tops, Spider-man has one of the greatest videogames of all time, Catwoman's has been described as an inferior Spider-man 2 knockoff, the shelves are lined with Spider-man figures.....I don't see any catwoman figures out there....do you?

OMFG, how the hell did Catwoman beat Spider-Man? Hell, how did Catwoman even make it into the top 12? People just don't have taste these days.
I've never seen Bourne Identity, so there is no point in me seeing Supremacy yet. I'll rent both of them when Sup comes out on DVD.
I can't wait for The Village next week though.
Then the weekend of Agu 13 is both Yu-Gi-Oh! and AvP. I'll be seeing both of those that weekend.

Christ folks, Spider-Man 2 has been out for 4 weeks? Why be upset if a new movie is released and makes a bit more than it that weekend? Stop looking at pole positions and look at the big picture. Spider-Man 2 will heavily outgross all but Shrek 2 in the top 10. Who cares if on its first weekend, Catwoman makes more than Spider-Man 2 on its 4th.

OMFG, how the hell did Catwoman beat Spider-Man? Forgive me for piling on but...how do you expect people to know a movie sucks if someone doesn't go see and tell their friends? "Hey this movie is really bad!" Not very many people run around on internet message boards or review sites reading what people think about it. It takes time for Word of Mouth to conquer an ad blitz.
I've heard lots of people like the Bourne series because it's a more realistic spy series than something like Triple XXX or Bond. Sure there's action but you don't have the level of unreality that you do with those movies. Hence the need for a spy movie that COULD concievably happen. I'm still praying that somehow they work in Carlos the Jackal. He's my favorite adversary (and the stupidest terrorist I have ever studied).
It seems that Fahrenheit 9/11 will defeat Pulp Fiction for the title of "most receipts for a Cannes winner."
Hey PaQ, still in the top 10 ;)

So do you think changing the color of the actress would have made this any better of a movie? Because I can tell you right now it wouldn't have mattered if she was green purple or yellow. The plot was bad period.

I have followed these totals for years, checking re-checking etc..For some reason, it is something that amazes me...Ferheineit 9/11, no matter how you feel about it, is holding its own, in a way that few have ..decreasing in relatively small increments...The two greatest "sleepers" totally unexpected successes, were "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Everyone Loves Mary" Mary was spectacular..it started in the middle of the back, sometimes in late June, or early July, and on Labor day weekend, I think it was the 13 week after release, It came in number l. These two movies made it on "word of mouth" advertising. And in my opinion, Wedding and Mary were really fun to watch..They crossed all age lines..similiar to Shrek II. I would like to take this moment to thank "Clown Prince" for taking the time to give us the info..great work.. Stuart:)

The only way that movie would be Spider-Man 2 is if it makes $330mill by it's fourth week. That's not gonna happen. The same thing happened last year when The Lizzie McGuire Movie beat X2 or something one weekend and a bunch of people freaked. I'm sure those posts could be found with a quick search.

Catwoman did what was expected, it's the fall off next week which will show it's success as word spreads. If the appreciation is poor, it will plummit and that will affect the chances of a sequel far more than what it opened with.
Next time, people won't be willing to give it a chance.. I think we can safely say good bye to this stinker.

That was for insulting the '66 Batman, that show was classic comedy, and while Pfeiffer was the greatest I'll take Newmar/Merriweather/Kitt over Berry any day, that show wasn't true to comic or animated series but it was a hell of a lot bettter than Catwoman or the Shumacher abominations

As far as I'm conerned, the only Batman series that is true outside of the comic universe is the animated series from the 90s.

Looks like Catwoman is this year's Gigli, not in terms of how bad it may or may not be, but how everyone is whining and moaning about it yet only a small fraction of the population has actually seen it or plans to.

Like I've said many times, I will never see CINO...EVER! But I really want to see The Bourne Supremacy, I'm glad it's doing so well. I loved the first one. I, too, am very dissapointed that CINO beat out Spidey and had a better opening than The Punisher, no matter what you have to say about The Punisher (I, personally, thought it was very good.), you cant say CINO is better and deserved more cash. But, like others have said, it'll fall hard and fast next weekend, and then fade into oblivion, as it should.
