Chikorita Rescue
While coming out of another random forest, Ash and the gang spot a Chikorita minding its own business sunbathing. Because he hates PETA so much, Ash decides that this Chikorita must become his, so he battles it using Charizard. However, Chikorita becomes injured in the attack (even though it was going against a CHARIZARD!), and Team Rocket has stolen the poor Pokémon! Will Ash rescue the Grass-type in time?
Comments: This is the first episode where Chikorita, probably the most popular of the G/S starters in the anime, appears. It also solidifies Ash's love for Grass-types.

Once in a Blue Moon
Ash is wondering just what exactly is in the GS Ball, when it's stolen by a Quagsire! Ash, Misty, and Brock now have to race along the river before the Quagsire use the GS Ball for an unknown purpose.
Comments: This episode's main purpose is to remind us that the gang still have the GS Ball. Other than that it's not too interesting...

The Whistle Stop
Ash, Misty, and Brock are wandering in some random area when they are (SURPRISE!) attacked by Team Rocket! Things look remarkably bleak for the gang until a young trainer arrives with a flock of Ledyba and saves Pikachu. But one of the Ledyba falls into Team Rocket's clutches!
Comments: Since the episode itself isn't interesting, I'll just comment about Ledyba itself. When G/S was first released in Japan, DMG Ice (http://www.dmgice.com) called the Pokémon "Foy" and encouraged everyone to do the same. Foy is Flight!

Ignorance is Blissey
Most Pokémon Centers have Chansey has helpers, but this particular Center has Chansey's evolved form, Blissey, as its helper. And for some reason, this Pokémon is HELPING Team Rocket! Could Jessie's past reveal the answer?
Comments: If I'm not mistaken, this is the first character development episode for Jessie since "Holiday Hi-Jynx." Apparently Jessie was too poor to attend human nursing school. One of the better episodes of Johto, too bad we don't see any Blissey more often.

NOTES
This season is the 4th American season and covers the end of the Orange Islands and the first 1/3 of Johto.
This week we get two plot-important episodes sandwiching two boring filler episodes.
Ledyba also appeared in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure and is the second G/S Pokémon from that short to appear here (HootHoot being the first). The final Pokémon, Elekid, appears in Master Quest.
Right now Ash's team is: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard, Squirtle, Heracross, and Chikorita.

I actually think Ash likes Grass types more. He just really likes Charizard. And also, each Grass type has done something important over it's run.
CHIKORITA: Not only the first G/S starter Ash caught, but the one that he's most clostly connected to and
The only one to actually evolve.
TREEKO: The only Ruby/Sapphire starter that Ash Caught.
BULBASAUR: First Red/Blue Starter Ash caught,
Stayed on the team for the longest, and even returns for a bit on Ash's team in the Hoenn episodes.
A pretty good episode. I think they kind of rushed Ash and Pikachu and Chikorita in the mountains, but otherwise, okay.

Yea, Bulbasaur is argueably the 3rd strongest member on Ash's team ever (1st being Pikachu, of course, and 2nd being Charizard). After Charmander evolved, Ash basically went with the 1-2 punch of Pikachu & Bulbasaur (leaving poor Squirtle and Pidgeotto in the dust).

I always thought that Charizard was regulary stronger then Pikachu. Well of course Pikachu's attacks are the strongest, but that's because the only fire attacks Charizard ever really learned are Flamethrower and Fire Spin (Too bad Charizard never learned Dragon Rage). Although if Bulbasuar was the 3rd Strongest member, how come he's the only one who didn't defeat one of the Orange League's champion (what's his name?) in the Orange League finals?

Charizard knows that dragon rage attack he used it alot throughout the SilverConference and before that for the 8th Johto badge I'm pretty sure

Pikachu is at a higher level than Charizard due to Pikachu being used in almost every episode, while Charizard went through a large portion of the series just loafing around.
And Charizard learned Dragon Rage in Kanto, I believe. He did use it against Drake, the Orange League Champion.

I guess that would make sense. I guess Charizard just seems naturally stronger then Pikachu. Although I consider Dragon Rage more of a Dragon attack then a fire attack (and so says my offical Pokemon Gold and Silver guide. You know it's offical because it's the only guide from Nintendo). I'm saying why don't they ever show Charizard using another fire attack like Fire Punch or Fire Blast or Flame Wheel or Ember (I know Charmander had Ember at least) or something like that. Unless it's the "Pokemon can only know up to 4 moves at a time" rule, which is kind of off and on in the Television show.

Dragon Rage IS a Dragon-attack, but TM's don't exist in the anime. :P And the attack itself has been flames ever since Red/Blue.
Charizard's Ember is LIKE a Fire Blast, but I see your point. Charizard only really uses Flamethrower, Fly, and Take Down. Usually that's all it needs.
And the whole 4-move thing is gone in the anime. Pikachu knows Thundershock, Thunderbolt, Thunder, Quick Attack, Agilty, plus that Electric Tail Whip thingy. Bulbasaur has Razor Leaf, Vine Whip, Solarbeam, Sleep Powder, Tackle, and, though it was used only in one episode, Whirlwind. Squirtle has Water Gun, Hydro Pump, Tackle, Bubble, and Skull Bash.
Hearing Brock say "And this is where we start out new adventure!" this morning made me reply: "Yeah, and it will only take almost 200 episodes..."
Yeah, I know this topic isn't for the morning episodes. So sue me.

Once in a Blue Moon wasn't so bad it was pretty nice except for team rocket and I did forget all about the Gs ball until now again  so those Quasire pokemon are so slippery nothing can hold them? how do they hug then? Ash and everyone staying up all night chasing after the ball was funny then Ash declared himself unbeatable which made me laugh since he gets a few beatings all throughout Johto
I don't think they're ever going to clarify just what the heck the GS Ball is. I know in the game it's used to catch Celebi, but come on...if that's what it is then they should've learned that in the 4th movie and gotten it done with!
It's a pity. The GS Ball had such wasted potential. It's like the writers thought "Hey, we'll build this thing up and at the end of the saga we'll finally reveal just what it is!".....and then they dropped that storyline in favor of useless crappy filler.
ARRRGH!!!

The initial rumor was that Celebi was in the GS Ball. But the ball never appeared in the games. At least the US version. I dunno if it appeared in the Japanese version (as Celebi is much easier to get in Japan than in the US).

"The Whistle Stop" **** - Great episode! Filled with the greatest elements of Pokemon humor: Team Rocket breaking the fourth wall, Misty yelling at Ash, Brock hitting on girls, and numerous puns. The episode was also very good natured.

Technically, I believe it is supposed to be next week. However, for some odd reason, CN is skipping that week and moving forward. Those skipped episodes will then air at 8AM during the first week of August.

That's a very weird move by CN. They should advertise to watch the episodes on the mornings at least. The kids who just watch the 8:00 PM episode are going to be real confused.
"Once In A Blue Moon" was an alright episode. I also kind of wish they had done something else with the GS Ball. You know, so it just wouldn't be.... there. Pokemon needs to work on it's sideplots.
I remember "The Whistle Stop" as the time when I REALLY started to become annoyed with Johto filler. I remember watching at the beginning praying "Please get to the gym! Please get to the gym!" And then being bummed when they didn't. Little did I realize how much regular "filler" would be between each gym battle.

why would they want to skip a gym episode for more filler  they should just start the morning over back to episode 1
I gave this week a super rating because none of it was very bad! todays was so good to! who knew Jessie could be so good and cute to? her friend Blissey was cute to and original since most pokemon centers just have Chansey :) super hungry Ash was funny as well to bad he didn't start seeing flying papayas hehehe

First off...I haven't commented on it yet...but I love the title sequence. The music is great enough--but the slick graphics and numerous cameos (plus Jigglypuff!) make it the best title sequence to exist until Advanced.
"Ignorance is Blissey" **** - Two four-star episodes in a row! Awesome! It's really funny as Brock hits on Nurse Joy and Misty drags him off; and, never tick off HUNGRY KETCHUM :) Also, Blissey was quite amusing. Aside from that, it was possibly the most touching episode an animated show has put out in years. Very sweet-natured and very optimistic.
why would they want to skip a gym episode for more filler  they should just start the morning over back to episode 1
It's assumed they're skipping it because either a) they don't want the morning run (which has an extra day) to get ahead or b) they want to get to Charizard's release quicker.
Although if Bulbasuar was the 3rd Strongest member, how come he's the only one who didn't defeat one of the Orange League's champion (what's his name?) in the Orange League finals?Bulbasaur wasn't KO'ed, it was just paralyzed. There's some sort of rule in the anime that a Pokémon is defeated when it's affected by a status effect.
