View Full Version : Entertainment Weekly article: ASC Shows/Pilots

(Saw this on SA, who got this from some magazine. slightly reworded)
Since people have been asking about any upcoming shows, here's where they stand:
Squidbillies: Most people know this already: Hillbilly squids. Dana Carvey has been approached to do a voice. =o
Stroker & Hoop: Detective show that premieres in August. I think they showed a preview of this on the cards.
The Venture Brothers: You saw the pilot; Jonny Quest parody premiering soon.
Untitled Project: All that I got on this is that it is by Evan Dorkin (who did Welcome To Eltingville) and that it involves Zombies on Staten Island. This is just a pilot at this point.
Minoriteam: A group of minority stereotypes superheroes...fight crime, or something. Characters include an Arab convenience store owner named Quickstop who can't be shot; an Asian human calculator named Wang; and a Mexican who fights crime with a leafblower named El Jeffe. This show is by the Crank Yankers people and is probably going to suck. This is also a pilot.

Mod Edit: Discloner posted a summation of the entire article, quoted below:
...this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly had a pretty decent sized article on Adult Swim, and the programming on it (namely ATHF and Harvey Birdman) talking about how the block has been snatchin' Jay and Dave's target demos from broadcast television prompting the block to greenlight numerous diffrent (low budgeted) projects, mentioning Seth's show.
The article also mentions Lazzo's history at CN, his ability to let the WS workers and writers do their jobs without having them change things, the network's doubt that the ATHF DVDs wouldn't sell well, several new shows (namely Stroker and Hoop), and passing mentions of Futurama, Family Guy, Squidbillies, and even Cowboy Bebop.
If you're a subscriber of the magazine and for whatever reason didn't get your copy or can't see this week's copy, or if you're an AOL member, the article should be on EW.com later this week (I can't find it there at the moment, and while I'd gladly scan or retype what was said...it'd get me in hot water.)
Noticably absent from the article (except that passing mention of Cowboy Bebop) is a more in-depth mention of the Action portion of the block. Currently they just reffer to it in the article as 'The network's night shift catering to robot geeks and comedy geeks'.

Wow. Really interesting. Is Seth Green's cartoon still in the works? Anyway, I'm looking most forward to Venture Bros. and Squidbillies at this point.
Minoriteam?! How come I've never heard of that till now?

I have a strange feeling CN isn't going to promote Seth Green's show too much, and is going to leave it up to Sony Pictures to do most of the promoting.

I guess the comedy guys are getting low on ideas except with Squidbillies because all the rest are just superhero/crime fighting parodies

I am intruiged by "Untitled Project" and Stroker & Hoop(although this idea seems familiar) a bit, Squidbillies I can't really say anything on, and then there is Minoriteam...which will probally have to veritably prove itself. All in all a nice update on what we already know.

This info can all be found in Entertainment Weekly with Matt damon on the cover. They have a great 2 page article on shows past, present and future.

All of them sound good except the last one. It doesn't sound promising, but I'll still watch it I guess.

Anyway, the facts -- because no one gets it all right -- the pilot is not about zombies on Staten Island. I dunno if Staten Island is where it takes place, but there's a reason someone may have confused the point. Doesn't matter. Is it about zombies? Well, yeah, there are zombies in it. And there's a character who is sorta, well, dead. I think. Not sure yet. He's not normal, that's for sure. Anyway, the show itself, if there ever is a show, is not about zombies, per se. It's a comedy with horror elements, although each epsiode doesn't necessarily have to be a "horror" show. In Hollywood pitch-speak, think the Young Ones meets the Little Rascals in the Twilight Zone. Attitude-wise, it's less Eltingville and more Milk and Cheese/Murder Family. Whereas on Eltingville I feel I was "overthinking" the project, working too hard on background and logic and world-building and set-up, on this project the approach is to "underthink". Underthink like crazy. Meaning, I'm planning this to be more like a Milk and Cheese strip -- anything can happen, stuff doesn't have to make sense, pop culture is an ingrediant but not a main course, the violence is of the ultra-variety, and things will be tighter, shorter, more compact, less-sitcommy, and hopefully, more funny. Fingers crossed. If the Network mentioned the project they must, I assume, have some minor hope for it, nobody forced them to plug it. It hoinestly shocked the crap out of me to see the mention. Now I have to go make good on the script and try to see how far we can go with this pilot..
Interesting news..
Dana Carvey could get me interested in Squidbillies..
Stroker & Hoop.. detective show.. I wonder how this show will come out..
I'm intrigued by the Evan Dorkin project.. Too bad it's not about Zombies on Staten Island.. because that is a weird premise..
Venture Bros, I'm still not sold on.. Has to be better than that pilot.
Minoriteam is the wild card.. It sounds like it can be really funny if done right, or really bad, "Sealab" bad, if done wrong..
Interesting shows for Comedy.. Should be fun to see them..

Seth Green's cartoon is still in development, but Fox actually has gotten it for their winter lineup to go on with Family Guy. Expect it to air on AS after Fox gives it the first run.

Dana Carvey? Sounds good, I hope he does it. He's a great comedian.
Anyways, all the shows looks alright. Just alright.

Venture Brothers has very sharp writing but I didn't care much for the pilot's plot.
Evan Dorkin's new pilot looks kick-ass. Stroker And Hoop looks unimpressivelly by the numbers.

You're thinking of American Dad. That's a whole nother show/person.
This was all from last week's Entertainment Weekly, minus the commentaries.
And Minorteam is news to me too. Could a guest shot of the Multi Culture Pals be not far off?

What did the commentaries say? Isn't S&H about car racing?

Apparently not many people on this board are Entertainment Weekly subscribers, else I've just overlooked any mentioning of the following on this board.
Anyway, this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly had a pretty decent sized article on Adult Swim, and the programming on it (namely ATHF and Harvey Birdman) talking about how the block has been snatchin' Jay and Dave's target demos from broadcast television prompting the block to greenlight numerous diffrent (low budgeted) projects, mentioning Seth's show.

Guess this is what the 'Today as WS' card ment when they said EW had stopped by. Not sure it warrent's picking up the issue...but if you happen to see an Entertainment Weekly at the dentist or when grocery shopping with Matt Damon on the cover, then you might want to flip through for the article. It's titled 'The A Team'.

Thanks for the in depth rundown. This is currently being discussed in this thread (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=116679), but the other items you mentioned are  too.
EDIT: Threads merged for clarity. Also your info has been added to the first post.

I got that issue of Entertainment Weekly in the mail a few days ago, and I was surprised to see that Adult Swim was featured. It was pretty interesting, and I think its been the largest article on AS in EW. Most of the shows look interesting, and I think AS is overdue on some new comedy shows. I just hope they are as good as Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Harvey Birdman. Minoriteam sounds the funniest to me right now, but if its true that it was created by the team who was responisible for Crank Yankers, it'll be funny for the first episode, and be lame the rest of the time.

I recently picked up Entertainment Weekly and read the article on Adult Swim. So, we found out about yet another new show premiering, Minoriteam. That looks like it may be a bit controversial. Stereotypes on t.v.? But controversy sells. Anyway, these shows will hopefully add some flavor to the monotonous reruns on.

A Jonny Quest parody that sucks.Thank you! I was wondering if anyone else watched the same show as me because I can't even finish a single broadcast. My ability to watch it petters out at about the 15 minute mark.
That said, I know from personal experience that leaf-blowers are AWESOME. Although I wasn't blowing leaves with it :D
