Monsters Inc. did way better than anyone could predcit, grossing almost $64 million bucks in it's opening weekend. It looks like Disney did the smart thing by pushing the release date by two weeks to get ahead of the sure to be hit Harry Potter. Jet Li's The One also faired well, as did Travolta's latest opus Domestic Disturbance.
1. Monsters Inc. - $63, 484, 000 ($63.5 mill)
2. The One - $20,000,000 ($20 mill)
3. Domestic Disturbance - $14,500,000 ($14.5 mill)
4. K-Pax - $10,700,000 ($32.1 mill)
5. 13 Ghosts - $7,960,000 ($27.7 mill)
6. Riding In The Car With Boys - $4,500,000 ($25 mill)
7. From Hell - $3,715,000 ($26.5 mill)
8. Training Day - $3,150,000 ($69.7 mill)
9. Bandits - $3,002,000 ($36.4 mill)
10. Serendipity - $2,500,000 ($43.6 mill)
I thought for sure this weekend would be Glitter's weekend to shine...I'm so dissapointed! This is surely an interesting weekend for box office returns, and the next few weekends are only gonna get more intense, especially with the Harry Potter movie only two weeks away.

Wow! I've been constantly amazed at how consistently successful Pixar has been... then again, if anyone deserves it, it's them! Let's hope Disney keeps giving them great piles of cash to help them make whatever they desire!

I can give you people the low down from the movie theatre employee's perspective. Monsters, Inc. is by no means a bad movie. It's pretty good from what I saw. But from the view of someone who has to clean up after movie patrons, MONSTERS, INC. IS THE DEVIL!!! The movie was showing on 3 screens out of the 12 we have and all day, since my shift started at 1pm until it ended at 10pm, every showing of the movie was either sold out or 3 seats away from it. The theatres were awash in a sea of popcorn, soda, vomit and smuggled-in Halloween candy (which may have caused the vomit, but let's stop talking about that). It was a living hell for 9 hours straight! My 30min min break was not nearly long enough. The other movies mentioned were no picnic either.

Oops. And I threw my wrappers on the floor when I watched it! Oh, well. That's job security for you!
I am not at all surprised how well this movie did. It delivered on every aspect, and I am sure it also drew in more of an adult audience who were there also to see the SW trailer. That helped quite a bit, I am sure.

I don't usually eat candy in the theater..but when I do..I just wait to pitch the box in the trash as I exit..
and let me tell you..I enjoyed Monsters Inc. immensly...

Yeah, it was a really good movie...it gave me that same feeling I get when I watch the Toy Story movies. Both the Toy Stories are a little bit better, but Monster's was pretty close behind in my opinion. You gotta give it Pixar for making great movies, they definitely deserved the #1 spot this weekend.

I already said my opinion on the film in another thread. Anyway, I sneak in candy every time I go to the movies and throw the wrappers on the floor, and Monster's Inc. is no exception. (runs from kiddiesunshine)

Could the Star Wars teaser have been partially responsible for Monster's big opening weekend?

I believe it helped. When I saw it, there were plenty of families in there with kids but there were also quite a few groups of adults who were talking about the Star Wars trailer before the movie began. While I am quite positive that Monsters Inc would have been a success without it, it certainly didn't hurt things.

I remember that when the trailer for Episode One was attached to Wing Commander, it helped that flick out considerably.

I can't believe I sat through Wing Commander. By 20 minutes into it - I was already fiddling with my keys and looking around the room. What a waste of $8.

The only reason I saw that movie was because of the Episode One trailer. But there were people who got up when the trailer was over, lucky them.

The Pixar short was very well done, as they all have been. It made me wish for more cartoon shorts before movies, and not just "kids" movies. We need to see more of them.
