Click here for DC's October solicitations (http://comics.toonzone.net/solicitations/2004-10/)

This month the "War Games" crossover in the Batman titles finally comes to a conclusion; Hal Jordan returns as Green Lantern in Green Lantern: Rebirth; Red Razors by Mark Millar is a look at the world of Judge Dredd; Warren Ellis writes a space mini-series called Ocean; Ed Brubaker begins his run on The Authority with Authority: Revolution; and a whopping three (!) new anthology series debut: Solo (where big name creators get to do whatever they want), Razor's Edge (featuring various WildStorm characters), and Toe Tags (a series of horror mini-series, starting off with a tale by George Romero of the Night of/Dawn of/Day of the Dead films).

Also debuting this month is DC's "CMX" manga line, with the first volumes of From Eroica With Love, Madara, and Land of the Blindfolded.

Trades and hardcovers are plentiful as always. This month we get: The 15th Anniversary hardcover of Batman: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison; a hardcover of Mark Waid's revamp of Superman's origin in Superman: Birthright; a hardcover collecting Tom Strong's Teriffic Tales; five (!) new Archives including Superman Archives Vol. 1 for only $20, Superman: The Man of Tomorrow Vol. 1 reprinting Silver Age stories, Golden Age Sandman Vol. 1, The Spirit Vol. 15, and DC Rarities; collections of two recent Batman storylines in Batman: As the Crow Flies and Batman: Hush, Vol. 2; the second volume of Jimmy Olsen Adventures by Jack Kirby; the long-awaited return of Sandman Mystery Theatre; new volumes for JSA, Teen Titans, and Fables; two digest collections of Teen Titans Go!; plus softcover versions of the Batman: Detective No. 27 and Lovecraft graphic novels.

DC Direct a B&W Batman statue; Catwoman and Flash posters; a Green Lantern ring set; JLA action figures based on Alex Ross designs; and a S:TAS Superman maquette.

So, what are you getting in October?

Well, if I can't wear the Green Lantern rings, that kinda defeats the point, don't it?

*ahem*

Sorry... anyhow, it's a pretty good-looking month for DC. "War Games", which I will not be reading, continues to monopolize all the Bat-titles, but at least it's over after this month. "Catwoman: When In Rome" looks very promising, but I'll be waiting for the inevitable hardcover. I've been on a bit of an HC frenzy lately, and this will make a nice addition to the collection.

Bit of a spoiler for Superman #210. I'll be reading Azarello's run in hardcover, so I probably would have found out before reading the issue anyway.

Superman/Batman #15 still has the most cliche storyline in all of comics, but I'm hoping Jeph Loeb will be able to make it interesting. The real Superman highlight of October is the Birthright hardcover. I decided to wait for the inevitable hardcover of this book, and I'm glad I did, because 12 issues plus extras for $30 is a fine deal. I'm really looking forward to reading this, because I've heard great things about this reimagining, and I love Yu's artwork. Very psyched about this one.

I actually think I'm gonna be picking up the new Adam Strange miniseries. I'm a big fan of space opera, and the covers look fantastic. If the interior art is anywhere near that good, I'd say I'm in for a treat.

Green Lantern: Rebirth is something I'll definitely be reading, if only so I know what's going on in the other titles. It sounds absolutely cataclysmic, and I still can't imagine what Johns could do to well and truly redeem Hal Jordan. We shall see...

I'll also pick up Identity Crisis, provided #2-#4 don't suck terribly.

I think the real surprise of this solicitation is the announcement of Kurt Busiek on JLA. I'm really looking forward to his run (I mean, it's Busiek!), but the big shocker is that it deals with the cosmic egg left over from JLA/Avengers. In other words, JLA/Avengers is definitely in continuity, which I never would have expected. That means the DC characters now, officially, have at least a passing familiarity with the Marvel universe, and it makes me wonder if that same miniseries will be used as a springboard for future crossovers.

And, naturally, I'll be buying Y: The Last Man, because I always buy it. Besides, they're finally revealing the exact nature of the plague, which I'm very interested to discover.

The DC vs. Marvel crossover from 1996 was supposed to be in continuity at the time; it was referenced in an issue of Green Lantern and was the basis for several crossovers aftwerwards. So it's not unprecedented, and I also wouldn't expect it to last indefinitely.

Wow! What a bloody fantastic month!

ROBIN #131 - Not sure if I'll read it through War Games, but I do care about what happens to Stephanie...
BIRDS OF PREY #75
SUPERMAN #210
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #15
ADAM STRANGE #2 (OF 8) - God, I can't wait for this. Looks like a killer revamp. Totally cool Star Wars, Flash Gordon stuff.
GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH #1 (OF 6) - I now kneel at the altar of Ethan Van Sciver. One of the best covers I've ever seen. While I still wish it hadn't come to this, they couldn't have picked a better team to resurrect Hal.
FLASH #215
IDENTITY CRISIS #5 (OF 7)
JLA #107 - Kurt freaking Busiek?! My ultimate fave writer?! On JLA?! Picking up from JLA/Avengers!
JSA #66
TEEN TITANS #17 - Looks like Johns has cooked up a pretty cool alternate future here. Very unexpected!
WONDER WOMAN #209
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #2 - Depends on if I like #1...
ASTRO CITY: A VISITOR'S GUIDE
WE3 #2 - I saw the preview for #1, and... wow. This could be the best story to come out of comics in quite a while.

Huh. I didn't know that, and it's definitely interesting. I didn't read new comics from about 1995-2000, so I never read Marvel Vs. DC or its various spinoffs. That being said, I'm willing to bet that JLA/Avengers is a more solid foundation for future crossovers than Marvel Vs. DC was.

As the weather turns breezy...

ARKHAM ASYLUM ANNIVERSARY EDITION HC - Never read this before, so this might be my big chance.

SUPERMAN #210 - Diana versus Superman. So many ways to mess it up. Let's just hope there's actually a reason for it, unlike Jim Lee's last superhero battle ("there's just GOTTA be a way we can get Superman to fight Batman that doesn't involve the government!")

REBIRTH - I don't care who you are or what side of the fence you're on for Hal Jordan. This is something every single DC fan is going to be reading. I'll be watching this with a close eye, because DC has been making very good, but very calculated moves over the last year or so. They've hardly been in the habit of a random move to make a few extra bucks, with the exception of Jim Lee.
On another note, anything by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver has my full attention after the glory of IRON HEIGHTS.

FLASH #215 - Getting verrrrrry nervous about Johns' plans for this.

JLA: YEAR ONE TPB - If you haven't read this, you are missing out on the greatest retro story of all time as far as I'm concerned. No one has done it better, due hugely to the awesome writing team of Waid and Augustyn and the Silver-Age-with-a-modern-hint beauty of Barry Kitson's art.

JLA #107 - What the? Busiek on JLA? SWEET! Ron Garney doing art? DAMMIT!

SOLO #1 - Been on the list ever since it was announced about a year ago. Really looking forward to this, 'cause hey...Tim Sale's kicking it off. 48 pages and no ads. That is sweet.

BATMAN BLACK & WHITE STATUES - Easily one of DC Direct's better moves, especially making them small enough to afford. Love Risso, but it'll probably come down to one, and I gotta stick with my Brian Bolland.

ALEX ROSS ACTION FIGURES - Now available, kids! Alex Ross' friends dressed up like superheroes! Collect all five!
