The Memorial Day weekend box office is in, and Shrek is kicking some major green tail. Pearl Harbor pulled in a respectable $75.1 million, but it was Shrek's $54.2 million that astonished everyone this weekend. This looks to be the first year when a non-Disney movie outgorssed Disney! Shrek is heading for a $200 - 250 million gross! The Mummy Returns barely lost any footing with it's $19 mill in the bag, and WB's Angel Eyes continues to fall faster than an anvil. Anyways, here's the top ten:

1. "Pearl Harbor," $75.1 million | New
2. "Shrek," $54.2 | Total $110.7
3. "The Mummy Returns," $19.1 | Total $170.7
4. "A Knight's Tale," $9.3 | Total $44.5
5. "Angel Eyes," $6.3 | Total $18.6
6. "Bridget Jones's Diary," $4.0 | Total $62.2
7. "Along Came a Spider," $2.2 | Total $70.7
8. "Memento," $1.9 | Total $14.4
9. "Blow," $1.3 | Total $51.6
10. "Driven," $1.2 | Total $30.9

I am SO glad to finally see a GOOD animated movie make good dollars at the box office! I hope this really encourages Dreamworks! As much as I am looking forward to the Shrek DVD, I am really looking forward to see how Dreamworks will follow this one up!

Definatly! DREAMWORKDS has confirmed a SHREK 2 is already in the works. They have 2 animated films coming up:

SPIRIT: A 95% silent animated film (!) about a horse in the old west.

TUSKER: A CGI flick about the last Mammoths during the Ice Age

DREAMWORKS is becoming a great change of pace!

But Shrek 2??? Sorry, perhaps it's a knee jerk reaction from Disney's lame sequels, but I just cringe when I hear a sequel is planned to a great animated feature. I hope they do as a good job at it as Pixar did on Toy Story 2.

I saw that movie twice, and loved each and every minute of it.
Anyway, i'm not so sure a Shrek 2 would be a good idea though.

Yes, I'll have to see it again.

Shrek 2? It could be a disaster, but remember how good Toy Story 2 was...

Shrek was a great movie. I couldn't stop laughing after Shrek pushed the princess into the bushes! lol
I'm glad to see it grossing so much!

I'm thinking it could reach the $250 mark. It's already about 40% there, I wouldn't be suprised at all.

This would be great, and a well deserved reward for those of us who want more movies like this, especially after Iron Giant and Titan AE kinda sputtered and died at the theaters.

I think Dreamworks has done a bang up job at marketing this one, though, where as those other two were half heartedly marketed. And I think that also makes a big difference. Movies ain't like baseball fields! You can't just build them and expect them to come! And I think Warner Brothers especially needs to learn this.
