View Full Version : "On the Rocks" is good!

I caught the last half-hour or so of "Flintstones on the Rocks", and it's very interesting. I noticed that CN Studios and Genndy Tartakovsky were behind this. The character designs were a little bizarre, they were, in a sense, like those used in the first Flintstones episode, "Swimming Pool". Fred was designed with a really big nose, as was Barney. Limited but well-stylized animation (think "Dexter's Lab") and some very adult, funny bits. The only thing I didn't like about it was the voices...Fred's is okay, but Wilma and Betty sound weird, and Barney's voice sounds more like Butler instead of Blanc. The idea is that the Flintstones and Rubbles go on vacation to Mexico, and Fred accidentally switches the bags of Wilma and a diamond thief, and the thief wants the diamond back. The thief romances Wilma, and Fred sees the two together and thinks she's been cheating on him. I won't reveal everything, I didn't see the whole thing, either. What I will say is, watch for the VERY adult end gag and the scene during the credits of Dino destroying the house while his owners are away.

I caught the whole thing, thought it was okay. I plan to set the VCR when it replays tomorrow. Barney's voice was done like Blanc's high-pitched Barney voice heard during the show's earliest episodes. I didn't catch who actually did the voices, though.

I only saw the last part, too, but I liked it. Some of the voices were kind of bad, though.
What adult gag is at the end when Dino is destroying the house? If you don't want to say it here, then just PM me.

Dunno who did Barney but Tress Macneille did Wilma and that Jeff(Bob?)Bergman who did Box Office Bunny voiced Fred.
As far as the movie itself goes, I liked it - even though its a bit of a sacrilege (like Kricfalusi's Yogi toons).
It's good to see new animation of HB's classic TV toons that's wild, inventive and best of all ADULT! Quite a contrast with the crummy animation and crap writing in what FOLLOWED it on Cartoon Theater- Flintstones Meet The Jetsons (YECCH!)
And by the way, the ending isn't ALL that's adult, guys. DO tape it and watch it without the kids around - or you're gonna have lots of 'splaining to do.
BTW, can anyone tell me what time (CST) it will be rerun on Sunday 11/4?
P.S. Remember the old Betty or Wilma question? I always picked Wilma - After watching ON THE ROCKS I now know I was RIGHT

Bareny was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson; Betty was played by Grey Delisle.
The Flintstones: On The Rocks will be repeated at 9:00 AM CST on Sunday (11/4/01).
I enjoyed it very much. The new voices didn't bother me much as the characters' designs were also a bit different.

I enjoyed it, too. I've always prefered the 1st season, so it's cool to finally see new Flintstones in that style.
The modern edge didn't hurt... much ;) Barney sounded, at times, like Mel Blanc's Joe Rockhead. Wilma's voice was perfect, but sounded like a sped-up version.
Of course, they couldn't resist the ol' gross-out, but thankfully not very often. Really only Fred & Barney's hineys(EEEEWWWWW!!). I thought the noses could've been smaller(though still larger than the later design). Loved the use of the music. In the beginning I thought they'd eshew the music, but I'm glad they didn't.
Drat! I completely forgot about it (both last night's and this morning's showings, no less)! Will this thing ever be rerun? I checked CN's schedule, and they only have Cartoon Theatre's listings through the end of November. I know the same Scooby movie shows up on Cartoon Theatre seemingly every other month, but given CN's scant promotion of the Flintstones movie, I don't know if I'll ever see it. And it sounds very interesting! Anyone know if there are plans to release it on video?

I loved it! I thought that was mad funny. Remember Fred and the jumping beans? The look he gives the camera is classic!

This is indeed the best "new version" of a classic cartoon series I've ever seen. I just thought about the movie last night (and realized I forgot about it), when I was at my uncle's 50th birthday, and my cousin asked one of the guests if she'd like her drinks "on the rocks"...:p

I knew I'd miss a joke or two buried in the credits when I clicked off the TV and left for church. Could someone help a fellow American who's down on his luck?

SPOILER WARNING!
The camera panned away as Fred and Wilma "made up" in the monkey powered vibrating bed ( Fred saying his tag line in a sexy way).
Dino trashed the house completely and was shown lifting his leg against a tree.
Pretty mild, compared with Spumco - but again, I liked it.
