Actress Melissa Gilbert. who voiced Batgirl in Batman: The Animated Series, was elected President of the Screen Actors Guild, replacing actor William Daniels (St. Elsewhere) who has held the post since Nov. of 1999, according to <a href="http://www.zap2it.com">Zap2It</a>.

Gilbert won with 45.3% of the vote to Valerie Harper's 39.4%. The race between the two actresses was a heated one, and described several times as "ugly."

Elliott Gould was named Guild Recording Secretary with 51.9% of the vote.

Over 98,500 ballots were sent to eligible voters across the country on Friday, Oct. 12. By the voting deadline, 28.1% had been returned -- an increase of 6.2% from the last national election.

Providence's Mike Farrell also won the race for the 1st Vice President. He, along with wife Shelly Fabares, Richard Dreyfuss (The Education of Max Bickford), Esai Morales, Diane Ladd, Renee Taylor and five others were alos elected to three-year terms to the National Board of Directors.

"I'm thrilled and honored to have been elected SAG President and am extremely grateful to everyone who worked on or contributed to my campaign," Gilbert said in a statement. "Mike Farrell, who was elected Guild First Vice President, and I are looking forward to embracing and working with all the different voices in the Guild and its leadership."

"We’re also looking forward to working with our fellow unions to bring film and TV production back to the United States."

She may be no crime fighter in her new position, but she is one pwerful woman!
