I was wondering about the characters on Family Guy and I was wondering if they have a 3 dimensional personalities like the Simpsons used to have or the characters on Hey Arnold. To me they may have a soft side but seem to be hidden by thier meaner side (just like the characters on South Park). Can someone give me an analysis on the characters?

Well, this really does belong on the Adult Swim Forum, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

PETER: He's basically an idiot, but deep down he really does love his family and tries to do his best to help them. Even though sometimes that gets in the way of his ambitions and goals, he'll still mostly choose his family over what he wants most of the time. But Peter's not that hard to figure out, even though few people realize he's a bit more then a bumbling moron.

LOIS: She's brings stability to the family and loves them with all her heart. She also has a very artistic side and loves to share her talents at various activites (giving Piano lessons, directing plays, etc). She also has a mean compettition side that also shows she has some anger issues on the inside sometimes she needs to resolve (like in "A Family Guy Freakin Christmas Special" or "Lethal Weapons").

CHRIS: He's somewhat of an idiot (originally, he was suppose to be more of a "rebel" in the family, but the writers changed that as they were developing his character. That's why the earrings he use to have on his ear were gone by Season 3) but he's also an awkard teenager for the most part, just wanting to fit in and make his family (espically his dad) proud of him. He excels the most at art and drawing, and tries his best to be good in other areas, if there's not something good on TV to watch anyway.

MEGAN: Kind of your average teenager who wants to fit in and be popular in school, but is pretty much an "ugly loser" and never seems to really be accepted by everyone except her family. Even there, she is unliked.... well, by the viewers anyway. They consider her the "worst" character. But Meg still tries to fit in, despite all obstacles and being unliked.

STEWIE: Stewie's steadily changed over the course of the show. Originally, he use to be this hateful baby with a mad ambition of world domination. He's probably the only one of the 6 who really dosen't care about the other family, espically Lois, his "Arch Nemesis" who he keeps trying to kill, but has little luck with. As the seasons passed on, we got to see his softer side, as in his more.... homocurious. It's stilled unknowed if he's really gay, straight, or just bisexual, but maybe the new episodes can shed some light on that.

BRIAN: Even though he's the dog, he's probably the most deep and developed character on the show. On the outisde, Brian's a witty, sarcastic drunk who loves his family but also wants his own life of independence. On the inside, he has his own share of problems. Worrying about his love life, his need for excitement, his desires to find who he really is and his issues with his mother, who gave him away but later found out it was just to give him a better life. Yeah, Brian's deep alright. Will he get any deeper in the new episodes? Just wait and find out.

That is the best thing I've seen written about the characters, most anrgy disgrunteld Simpson Fans always say FG just has cheap 1 dimensional characters, but when you watch the episodes over and over, you realize they're much more than that!

The Family Guy characters have softer sides and some depth to their personalities, but the main reason why people think otherwise is likely because in most episodes, the writers would much rather go for a funny sight-gag rather than an emotional scene.

I prefer a mix of both, personally.

I still think the supporting cast needs some fleshing out, though - really, they're pretty much all one-beat characters at this point. Fun and entertaining, but not terribly deep. At least not yet.

I'd say the characters are caricaturish, because the show is written around the character being props for jokes. Yeah, the characters do have distinguishable traits and personalities, but none of them are very likable or interesting, with the exception of Brian the dog. There are so many times when Peter acts insensitive, unremorseful, and idiotic for a quick joke that the few times he does do something loving for his family, it's not at all convincing. And Megan is downright irritating (see the spring break episode).

I feel sorry for Brian. It seems like he has suffered the most emotional pain out of any of the family members:His mother dying,Getting addicted to cocaine,Being in jail a few times, etc. I hope the poor guy does not suffer from more stress in the new season.

Stewie seems to be a ood character he has trouble discovering who he really is, is he a homosexual or a baby bent on world domination i find that when they circle around his sexuality its more funny, i do feel sorry for Brian he cant catch a break with anything :-s
