I decided to wait three episodes before I would reviewSmallville. I usually give comic books a three issue chance, so I thought I'd do that here, too. After watching 3 hours worth of Smallville, let me say that Micheal Rusenbaum is awesome! He is the perfect Luthor. You can already see the seeds being planted for his future, yet even he has no idea. In episode three, it is a Rosenbaum tour-de-force as he faces off against his dad. Those sequences were some of my favorite sequences.
Amazingly, I can totally believe Tom Welling is a 16 year old High Schooler. I don't know how, but he makes it work. I can look past him being amazingly tall compared to everyone else and having a more defined face, but he is Clark. When this kid turns thirty, I saw suit him up and put him in the Superman movie! Tom Welling does a good job portraying the problems Clark must face with having to keep his powers a secret. It is just uncanny how much he resembles Kent.
The supporting cast is okay. Chloe can bee anaoying from time to time, but thankfully we only get small doses of her at a time. Pete Ross just seems to blend into the background, same with that Whitney guy who doesn't seem to change his clothes. Lana though....well...she's not what I expected. When I think of Lana Lang she is not what I imagine as in my head. The comics got it right. She seems a little weird here, but she does the character justice. The Kent parents fit as well. I can see Jonathan Kent already forming into Jeph Loeb's all knowing Pa Kent and Martha morphing into the sweet, strong mature woman.
The stories seem to be a mix of X-Files and Dawson's Creek. The X-Files tinge I like. While the villian of the week thing may get old, it is working for now. The villian in episode two was probably my favorite of the bunch. I would reall ylike to see the villians break the mold, which is similair to what Buffy and X-FIles fell into in their early seasons. But fo rnow - I ma enjoying it. The whole Kryptonite is everywhere is believebale - but only for so long. I'm not sur ehow much longer that underlying plot thread can work.
Overall, I also give this series, so far, a B+. While there are one of two minor problems, the good stuff definatly outweight them.
