It was reported on Sky News that James Doohan from the original Star Trek series has Alzheimer's disease. According to his wife, it seems to be mild so far. To read more about it and to get a link to the original article, Star Trek HQ.com (http://startrekhq.com/index.php)has coverage about the news.

Yes, Scotty is having a rough time in his twilight years. He already has Parkinson's Disease and diabetes and has been missing the middle finger on his left hand since he lost it at Normandy.

I have never watch much of the original Trek (like to, just haven't) but I really enjoyed Doohan in both ST:TNG episode "Relics" and in Generations (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=106036). Scotty seems like he will be my favorite character once I get around to it.
It's sad and unfortunate when this happens to anyone though.

That's awful! I hope Nimoy and Shatner feel bad about slamming him in Futurama. I love Scotty and my prayers are with Doohan and his family, especially his young child.

When did they "slam" him on Futurama?

When did they "slam" him on Futurama? They did this episode called Where No Fan Has Gone Before that featured all the cast members of the original Star Trek series except for James Doohan (Scotty) and Majel Barret (Chapel) along side with Fry, Leela, and Bender. He might have meant they slamed him when Uhura said, "The guy who played Scotty had some problems yodeling."
Also, they had some guy named Welshy for a minute or two that was supposed to be a replacement for Scotty.
But he was ellectrocuted by Melllbar, the alien cloud entity.

I never even considered that it might be a slam. I had interperted it as a way to get around their not being able to get Doohan to do a voice because of illness (of course, they just had McCoy not talk, they might've just been going for diversity or I might just be wrong).
Wow, poor guy, he seems to be always battling something lately. Poor guy. I also didn't think of the Futurama thing as a slam, I always thought they just couldn't get him for some reason or the other.. I always liked him in the 60's series.. back in the lean years.

I was actually thinking of the line where they made an insult (I forget what it was) and Shatner said "Doohan" as an example and he and Nimoy high fived.

Oh yeah, Shatner was saying something like how he once threw his boot at the enemy in an episode and Nimoy said, "You mean, Doohan?" and then they high fived.

I didnt even know who this thread was about until I heard on the radio that James Doohan was Scotty. His real name and the guy who played Chekcov? are the two cast members from the orginal who's names dont ring any bells for me.

Ensign Chekov was played by Walter Koenig.

It was only a gag in a show, about the mutual dislike between Shatner, Doohan and Nimoy. Doohan has been vocal about it - in fact one of the first to be. Doohan, really doesn't like Shatner, he's gone on record on that.
I don't see any reason why a gag like this should make them feel guilty. They didn't cause this tragic event, nor were they commenting on it.
Poor old Jimmy. I loved Scotty, I wish him and his family all the best.

it's a shame futurama is gone.. they really could have milked koenig and his babylon 5 cohorts dissing via photon torpedoes, the original trek cast in a followup... forcing the tng cast to save the original cast.. and the enterprise cast trying to get involved but some of melbar's homies blast the ship into a black hole, with that guy playing archer leaping out of fry at the end..
but i digress. what's gone is gone.
