Sad Cat
Okay, I've heard of all those other characters, and have even seen some of their cartoons, but who is "Sad Cat?" I've heard of this character before (always in a very good light).

Sad Cat??! ::shudder::

Think Droopy if he was never appealing, eternally depressing, ungodly boring, and constantly bullied. Oh, and with the limited animation one might expect from Terrytoons in the late '60's.

I just transferred an old Beta compilation of these onto VHS for a friend of mine, and I can say that if I never have to watch these cartoons again, it would be too soon.

Sad Cat is a lanky blue cat who is usually bullied by two shorter brother cats (a la Cinderella; in fact the debut cartoon of the series was a take-off of that). They never let him participate in their activities, and usually at the end he gets involved and becomes victorious or ends up in a better light than them.

They are noteworthy perhaps only because the first cartoon of the series, "Gadmouse the Apprentice Good Fairy," was Ralph Bakshi's first directorial credit.

As much as I hate to badmouth theatrical animation, stay far away from Sad Cat! :)

"Sad Cat" was Ralph Bakshi's 1964 creation which began as a parody of the Cinderella story and developed into a series of cartoons. The character was so low-key it was hard to get any real action animation out of him or his stories, but by 1964 Terrytoons budgets weren't allowing for much in the way of action animation in the first place.

He was 10 times better than the concurrent Terrytoons creation "Luno the Flying Horse," thank God, so at least there's that to say on the positive side...

All I can say is that "SAD CAT" is one of the funniest Terrytoons characters in the mid-sixties(next to POSSIBLE POSSUM) that the studio put out during that time.
