After the event many fans and most of the Toon Zone wrestling community considers a trainwreck, The Great American Bash (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=114904), we have a new WWE Champion and no conscience. After a judgment call by General Manager Kurt Angle, John Bradshaw Layfield won the Texas Bull Rope Match and the WWE Championship, ending Eddie Guerrero's five-month title reign.

"The right thing" by Paul Heyman was apparently for The Undertaker to lay down for The Dudley Boyz. Taker won the match, but then filled up Paul Bearer's crypt the rest of the way with concrete himself.

FEEL THE FALLOUT FROM THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH
July 1, 2004

The fallout from The Great American Bash occurs this Thursday night at 8/7 CT when UPN presents SmackDown!

We have a new WWE Champion, as John Bradshaw Layfield was named the winner of Sunday's Texas Bull Rope Match under the most controversial of circumstances. What will General Manager Kurt Angle -- who ordered JBL the winner -- have to say this week? What will JBL and the now former champion, Eddie Guerrero, have to say?

Also, the Undertaker did the unthinkable -- pouring concrete onto his longtime manager Paul Bearer after saying he had "no choice." What did he mean? Perhaps we'll find out this Thursday night on UPN.

John Cena retained the U.S. Championship at The Great American Bash, but his three opponents -- Rob Van Dam, Booker T and Rene Dupree -- all want rematches. This week on SmackDown!, those three Superstars will battle in a Triple Threat Match to become the No. 1 contender for the U.S. Championship.

Plus, Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio goes one on one with Mordecai!

All this and much more this Thursday night (8/7 CT) when UPN presents SmackDown!

This show would've been saved from sub-par if not for that Kenzo Suzuki/John Cena segment. It was one 10-minute actionless ring segment too many. And really, they're overestimating John Cena's mic skills. If the best he can do is yet ANOTHER series of insightless poop jokes mocking a guy, stuff that an 8-year-old could come up with, they need to stop. It was a ridiculous waste of time, having that whole Japanese-language speech and then going over it AGAIN. It was like freakin' Teletubbies.

There was some good stuff, though. Again, if not for that, the show would've been a "good" show. I still say Bradshaw has a great ring presence. He's cocky, a little silly, but big and intimidating. He seems like a classic wrestling villain, perfect to be set up for an upset.

Nice match between Dupree, Booker T., and RVD though I really was expecting Dupree to win. I'm also not expecting a title change to Booker T. next week.

So Rey Mysterio reprises the role of the giant killer. Nice. At least Mordecai won't go on a cliche rookie winner streak.

Torrie/Sable/Charles Robinson/Luther Reigns. Meh. Something to do, I guess. I was happy that Charlie Haas came to the aid of Charles Robinson and that he seems to be getting a singles push of sorts.

The whole Suzuki/Cena bit was tired, a waste of time, and anything but funny. This is the manifestation of what John Cena has become in recent months.

I'm still a bit in the dark about the whole Heyman/Undertaker angle. Paul Heyman used Paul Bearer as bait to trap the Undertaker in so if Paul Heyman actually got rid of the bait, how did he expect the Undertaker to stay in his trap? Further more, why did the Undertaker feel that he had no other choice at the Great American Bash? What consequences did he face?

Speaking of tired, the entire Spike Dudley thing not only felt like it had been done before, it actually has! Even the Dudley Boyz/Spike scene where Bubba Ray and D'Von confront Spike on not ever getting a shot at the title. I believe Spike was going up against either Austin or Triple H that time.

With the cage match added, next week's Smackdown prep rivals that of the Great American Bash.

It was not that good this week, save for the Cena on Sezuchi promo. Common, who doesn't love poop jokes? Spike Dudley needs to have his character thought out again. Its the same again. Steel cage, steel cage! Eddie will get the belt back.

There wasn't much improvement in this week's episode of SmackDown! Oh well, I can always look forward to Velocity.

Angle's opener was good just for the return of the three I's. I haven't heard those in a long time.

JBL gave a decent promo, but it was killed by the crowd. He got absolutely no reaction from the crowd. That's unbelievable considering that he's a new heel champion. His title reign won't be lasting too long if this is the kind of reaction he's going to be getting.

The Triple Threat match between Booker T, René Duprée, and Rob Van Dam was pretty good, probably the best match of the night. It got really good toward the end, and the 5 Star Frog Splash RVD hit on Duprée was awesome. Cena versus Booker T next week should be pretty good.

The segment with JBL in the locker room just confused me. Why exactly was Hardcore Holly there? Didn't he lose his match at Judgement Day?

Rey Mysterio versus Mordecai was okay. I'm still a little shocked that Mysterio won. Hopefully he won't just be squashed next week. A few more wins by Mysterio like this one and the Cruiserweight Championship should be able to regain some of the credibility it lost during the title reigns by Jacqueline and Chavo Classic.

I liked the reasoning behind having a rematch between Torrie and Sable, but that can't make up for the fact that this was a bad match. I especially liked seeing Torrie getting the victory after hitting about two moves on Sable at the end. I'm just glad they didn't go through with having a match between a wrestler and a referee. What really surprised me was when Charlie Haas ran out to make the save. I can't believe they're actually going to build on his match with Luther Reigns at the Great American Bash.

The promo with Kenzo Suzuki and John Cena was pretty stupid, but it did manage to get a cheap laugh out of me for Cena's horrible Godzilla impression. I guess we can expect some kind of interference in Cena's title defense next week.

The main event was just bad. I've already seen JBL defeat smaller opponents (Funaki and Mysterio). I really didn't need to see his squash another cruiserweight.

Eddie versus JBL in a steel cage? I'll be sure to watch that. Hopefully Latino Heat will finally be able to defeat Bradshaw.

SmackDown! wasn’t anything extra special this week, but it was a fairly good show, all things considered.

I was shocked they went with it, but I will not be one of the critics of a JBL Title reign before it really gets going. Bradshaw is not the greatest ever in the ring, but he has a solid intensity and does a really strong promo every time. His show-opener about the kind of Champion he is going to be got his days as Champion off to a strong start.

Going into the Triple Threat match I knew three things—it was going to be a good match, Duprée or Booker was going to win, and it was going to be after RVD didn’t follow-up quickly enough on his Frog Splash. I would have rather Duprée get his shot and actually become the Champion, but I was still right on all three counts. ;)

Luther was not happy with poor Charles Robinson. ‘Little Natch’ should have stuck up for himself though. “I’m so-sorry Mr. Reigns. That was supposed to be the end of the match and to be frank sir, Sable and Torrie are far from being good wrestlers. They’re decent at best.”

JBL made a solid choice in Spike Dudley, who wrestled on HEAT before the Bash. :p

I was all set to complain about how they matched the Cruiserweight Champion against a guy who isn’t one. But after Mordecai blew the West Coast Pop reversal so bad that I couldn’t even tell what he was trying to do, I just kinda forgot about that part. It appears Mordecai and his former OVW tag team partner Tyson Tomko have something in common.

Wow, I don’t know quite what to make of everything that went on between Heyman, Taker and Bearer, but after the Dead Man’s long overdue words it seems things aren’t good for the former SD! GM.

Well Torrie went out and proved that Sable in the more inept of the two. But I guess I can’t totally blame her, seeing how her primary trainer was Marc Mero. :p

I’m not opposed to the feud coming after the match so I look forward to seeing Charlie Haas start a feud with Kurt Angle’s assistant. I think Charles Robinson was happy to see him too. :D

It’s always interesting when Bubba & D-Von first interact with Spike after turning heel and this was one of the better outside the ring ones. I’m always hoping for a Spike-tossing contest though. :p

They’ve used it before, but I love when the SummerSlam commercial has an Olympic theme. They always use the events in a very clever way that makes it fun.

Kenzo Suzuki completely killed the crowd. Interestingly enough, when Tajiri (who is in Japan with his pregnant wife btw) would do something similar the crowd would find it rather entertaining.

Speaking of things that used to be entertaining, the heel John Cena would have been on fire with the kind of material Kenzo provided instead he used it as an opportunity to make as many poop jokes as he possibly could. Which is appropriate, because since Cena became a face everything he’s touched has turned to…

Using Mordecai vs. Mysterio was a bad way to act like Spike could win the match. JBL would kill Mordecai and Spike wouldn't stand much of a chance against Rey-Rey. The match wasn’t too bad overall though. Spike wasn’t going to win, but he did come close a couple of times. It was a good thing Eddie didn’t try to drive a low-rider out to get to JBL—we would have had a traffic jam on our hands! :D

Ah, so that's where Tajiri's been. I assume everything went well because he's supposed to be back in action on Heat tomorrow, which I'll be watching for the first time in about a month and a half.
