View Full Version : The Greatest Sequel........
At the library, one of the librarians is also sci fi, like me.. He reserved, a 9 disk DVD set of all four Alien movies. It took a couple of days to really see it, and a couple of viewings...I honestly believe, that Aliens, is the greatest sequel ever made...It is almost seemless. Camroon was a fan of the Alien ,knew it backwards and forwards,(even directed a Roger Coreman ripoff) admired Ridley Scott, and made it a point to enhance and use Scott's cinematic techniques in Aliens..While two totally different films, so much is symbiotic, as well as just similiar...l. landing on a fearful planet, (only Ripley knows in 2)2. long dangerous corridors, getting smaller and smaller. 3. Lighting 4. Direction 5. Involvement of an outside evil "conspirator", the company......6. use of darkness and smoke in similiar mannor 7. countdown at end 8. relief at what appears to be an end 9. more action at end, that is really great...If you haven't seen these, I am sorry I gave some away. If you have time, go and borrow the DVD, or just watch the first Alien, and Aliens.. back to back...I think you will agree...If not, what do you think is the greatest sequel? Stuart

Godfather II. Period.
Had all the great aspects of the first with an intriguing story, excellent acting, while bringing some fresh things to the table...namely Robert DeNiro

I don't consider Two Towers and ROTK as sequels as they were merely a long tale cut into three parts for human comsumption.
In that regard, they're sorta like Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Back to the Future III.
It's a three way toss up between Terminator 2, Toy Story 2 and Aliens. After JUST having watched Spiderman 2, I say it would be up there too, definitely top 10.

From all the films I've seen, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
It's the perfect sequel. It takes the characters & plot to places the first film never even hinted at. It's not a remake of the first, it has completely different pacing & structure. The character's personalities and arcs are furthered along the logical lines. It has a striking colour pallete, setting it apart from the first.
Often, I'll imagine what it must have felt like to be a Star Wars fan in 1980, watching TESB for the first time... having everything be a complete suprise.
God, I can't get over how perfect a sequel this is. Despite being a middle film, it stands on its own perfectly.

Rocky III or Escape from the Planet of the Apes, both of which took franchises which had hit a dead-end and breathed new life into them. Dawn of the Dead too, but more because it's arguably the greatest movie ever than anything else.
EDIT: Oh, also The Human Tornado.
From all the films I've seen, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

God, I can't get over how perfect a sequel this is. Despite being a middle film, it stands on its own perfectly.I was there the first day in l980, midnite show, I went late that day,(it had been showing all day, and I thought it woud be easy to get a seat, it wasn't, the theater was full) and was angry, and disappointed.I did not see it as a success, and I was wrong (financially it did not take in 2/3 of the first Star Wars)..I had to wait another two to three years, just to find out howthis triology ends, that was the talk as we walked out...Only after several viewings, did I realize what a great picture it is..Stuart

Aliens. You can't argue. No, you can't. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done. This I think is quote from Aliens, or Alien.. Some wise ideas have been presented here . Unfortunately, I have not seen Godfather II, the first one was so real, creepy and evil, that I did not want to see the second..that is supposed to be outstanding, as is Empire Strikes Back...But I would still stick with Aliens, probably because the the way I feel about it I should sit down, and watch Godfather I and II, back to back, no matter what, and then decide again....and yes, Toy Story II, was better than Toy Story 1. Godfather II- Pure poetry
Batman Returns- A poem of a film. As Kit Ramsey would say: "It's a film, not a movie!" It had everything the first film had and more. Michael Keaton had totally become one with the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman who gives the character endless dimension, and inner termoil. Michael Keaton IS Batman and no body will ever be able to take that away from him. It's an absolute breathtaking film that is rich and poetic with a sad story, gleefully told and it makes for a show stopping film.
