Hey everyone. I'm conducting a little survey for a class about film. I'm doing a project on animation, and one of the topics is what's so great about it.
So, my question is:
Why do you like/dislike animation? What is it about the genre that you love/hate so much? What initially drew you in (or kept you away), and why have you stayed?
If I think of any more, I'll put them up.
Thanks to everyone who responds!

I think I like animation so much because of the possibilities it allows. You can do so much more with animation than you can do with live action. Plus, animation is a wonderful art form and can so look beautiful when it is done correctly.

Also, it's a wonderful forum for those who wish to act but don't like memorizing scripts, wearing makeup, or having ten billion eyes on them. You can have your script in front of you to look at and have a mug like a baboon's butt, yet still get work if you have good pipes. Where else but the v.o. booth can a burly biker become a little girl and a middle-aged hausfrau become a ten-year-old boy?

I think a lot of it has to do with my love of cartooning and drawing in general. Because I draw I appreciate all the drwing these guys did to make this thing I'm watching.
I also love the freedom in animation. Building an image peice by peice is very different from, say, photography.

The freedom and ability to take the viewer to new and exciting places live action couldn't is beginning to become meaningless in the days of CGI. What continues to draw me to animation is I like art, and I like seeing the art in animation. And it's not one style of animation that intrigues me, but rather all styles. The more unusual the style, the more intrigued I will be. But there has to be a story told, or something for the viewer to gain. I don't just like something because it's animated, but I like it if it tells a story too that's meaningful. And even if CGI can take the place of animation in the future, I will still crave the traditional forms of animation, as there is just something about it that live action, even live action enhanced with CGI, cannot replace. Action sequences, exotic locales, and even human emotions can often be more enhanced in the animation when it is done right.

It allows you to see many possblilities as Tuffycatt said-but with animation, you can highlight them with the art. Also, many different drawing styles can emerge with animation, and you can get heavy plot or comedy as you wish, only, unlike live-action, there are hundreds of choices to choose from at any single moment.
Besides, animation is an international thing. We got animes, we got American-esque stuff, we got European shows...you can see what animation is like on another part of the world.
