Freedom Fighter

Time for week two of "Winx Club!"

This week's episode... "More Than High School." Stella takes Bloom and her parents to Alfea School to tour the campus. Will she decide to stay and hone her magical powers? Will her parents agree to it?

The show airs this week at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., but check local listings as some areas show Fox Box at different times / on Sunday.

Please don't post unnecessary spoilers about this episode until after it has aired, and as per usual, please spoiler box stuff about future episodes.

Enjoy the show, and I'll be back with a review later.

The magic's in you, folks!

Oops... KPFan beat me to the first review. Oh well, here's a more detailed review.

Not too bad an episode... we did see the rest of the girls for the first time (as I predicted). We also got our first real look at the Senior Witches (who ended up encasing Bloom in ice, thus kiboshing my second prediction from last week. Maybe next week)

Oh, and I think the "Crystal Ball Video" this week gave me an idea on how next week is gonna turn out.

Overall, not quite as action packed as last week, or even the sneek peek episode, but another fun ride nonetheless. I'll give it a 3, deducting a point on account of Bloom getting trapped before she could do anything powerful.

NEXT WEEK: From the title of the episode, and from the music video at the end, here's what I predict will happen: A big dance, the Senior Witches ruin the party, and (let's try this one again) Bloom finally gets her full Winx powers.

The rest of the group makes their appearances. Interesting range of powers... Stella (sun), Tecna (technology/computers), Flora (plants), Musa (music), and Bloom (fire... right?).

Heh... using fairy powers to move cars so you can get a better parking space. Imagine being on the receiving end and coming out of a shop finding your car's been displaced by three spaces or so. :p

Figures... the 'seniors' are picking on the 'freshman.' Even if said involvees are from different schools. And who thinks the witches wear too much eyeshadow?

Voices are still okay. Nothing special, but at least I don't mind hearing them. Transformation sequences are still blah... but maybe because a certain other transforming show had more to show off, if you catch my drift.

Pico, Bloom's little rabbit, continues to steal the spotlight every time he's on screen. He's the comic relief, that's for sure. And that ogre, Nut (or is it Naut... I still don't know how to spell it), seems to get all the bad breaks.

3 out of 4 this week. Improved enough to go up, though some things still need to improve for more to put this on my 'Can't Miss' list.

(P.S. Didn't know making predictions counted as spoilers, sag_2002.)

I need to watch this episode again because I was walking in and out of the room. I got it taped so no worries there. Some the dialouge sounds kind of cheesy in certain places. I wouldn't mind so much but it is easliy detectable. Is Stella the only who sounds like that? It is too *teen-speak*. I hope the others don't fall into that trap.

I'm pretty sure this show will be a hit with young girls and a CD will no doubt be released when the first wave of merchandise hits the stores. They will need to expand the songs that were played during the "WINX music video" clip at the end of the show because those songs are pretty short.

(P.S. Didn't know making predictions counted as spoilers, sag_2002.)True, I did put spoiler space in for a regular old prediction, but in retrospect, I really feel that what I put there is gonna happen next week.

And who thinks the witches wear too much eyeshadow?
Yeah, that eyeshadow thing is kinda distracting... and ugly.

that ogre, Nut (or is it Naut... I still don't know how to spell it)...
TVTome has it as Mr. Nutt.

It's understandable that there wasn't much action in today's episode since this episode has to deal with many introductions: Alfea the school, some Alfea teachers/staff, the roommates, the "realm" of Winx, and finally the senior witches that are after Stella's staff for some as yet unexplained reason. Still, there was a scuffle that showed some action and introduced the key powers of each of the witches and the fairies. Also, it's completely expected that Bloom should not be able to defend herself from 3 senior witches. She has no training in magic at all yet, and so far has a hard time using magic. If she went from a normal girl to expert magic creature in a "wink" that would not make sense.

Did anyone notice that this episode started off exactly where the last one ended? No, not just continued the story from where it let off ... they were all standing in exactly the same spot. I'm not sure if this is going to be a regular thing, but it makes for much more involved story arcs where you can't just judge it by one episode.

OK, Stella was already a student at Alfea, but somehow she is in the same grade as Bloom? They made reference to Stella blowing up a class the previous year and almost getting kicked out. They probably suspended her and made her repeat freshman year, but it's clear that these freshman girls already have a good command of their powers. Bloom has some serious catching-up to do. They mentioned that Earth had magic creatures long ago but not any more, so Bloom may be an anomaly or there's something else going on with her that we will learn more about later.

Sure, this show is a little bit on the sugary sweet side (girls' fashion) but they seem to balance it with some good action. We'll see how it unfolds over the next few episodes.

Aren't sun and fire powers the same?
Now that I think of it. Don't know what I was thinking when I was writing that. But seriously, what is Bloom's power? That was revealed in the sneak peek last month, right? Or do we still not know?

If the others are, I haven't noticed it. Then again, they haven't talked all that much yet. But Stella, yeah, is probably too valley girl for my taste.

And you're right about the dialogue. It's cheesy at some points, but thankfully, it's not the worst I've ever seen. Other dubbed shows have had a whole lot more cheese... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it takes the rest of the show (plot, characters, etc.) to make a call on whether to keep watching or not.

I must not have been paying attention. They said Stella was held back a year? But considering the situation... it might make sense.

My guess is that the rest of the team has had their powers for quite some time and have probably gotten to use them back in their homelands/homedimensions. Bloom coming in as a total newbie will definitely make it very hard for her to succeed, but I think she'll pull through in time.

From the Alfea's "Winx Test" page at Winxclub.com:

Tecna: Fairy of Technology
Flora: Fairy of Nature
Musa: Fairy of Music
Stella: Fairy of the Sun and Moon
Bloom: Fairy of the Dragon Fire

It's spelled "Mr. Knut" on closed captioning, which I'm assuming is the official spelling. Also, since the powers aren't based on the traditional setup (fire, air, earth, water), I guess it doesn't matter if powers are duplicated, after all, Musa has a subwoofer power that could come from technology.

I think Bloom trying to get the cell phone to work over vast intergalactic distances was funny, since a bunch of people have problems just trying to connect across a city on Earth. If that phone had worked over the zillions of lightyears it had to travel, I would have tried to find out which service provider could do that. :) Aside from that, nothing too spectacular in this episode, although the fairies unable to survive in ice, is something different from other such shows with elemental powers.

1. OK, here's a trump card: the rabbit must be magical.
Because otherwise, how was it able to pass thru the magical barrier?

2. This show is still eh. Many of the animation sequences still need more creativity, particularly the transformation sequences (but since these are stock footages, I'll just stop including them).

Should be an easy one here..
it's Tecna...all the other powers are Natural or Artistic in Nature. but a Fairy of Technology? Ho-kay.. 9.75 on the weird scale here.. why would there be a Fairy of Technology huh?

I think I'll need counseling to remind myself that life is worth living after having witnessed 5 minutes of this show.

I'd rather watch a 24 hour marathon of Totally Spies than watch 30 minutes of this. God, why must every chick in these type of shows always be a bunch of fashion chasing valley girls? People who probably couldn't do division without their heads exploding manage to control magic powers. Talk about power in the wrong hands.

Girls need better role models. Like Sigourney Weaver, Uma Thurman and Linda Hamilton.

Sam and Alex are not valley girls though Clover certainly is. Sam and Alex are also into fashion but that doesn't automatically make them valley girls.

Wow. Second "Winx" topic that deteriorates into people insulting each other over whether they like it or not. That's not a good sign.

I don't know what it is that I like about this show, but I like it. Maybe because it's so wantonly goofy without any sort of self-consciousness. I also like the relatively slow pace of the series, despite an action scene in each one; they're building the mystery and establishing the setting with a great deal of deliberate care, something you don't normally see.

I agree with lostrune in that a lot of the actual animation seems stiff; you almost wonder if it was done with something just above Flash in sophistication. Also, while the ambient music is okay, I can't stand the songs. They're why mute buttons were invented.

It's something I'll watch, if only to see where it's going. I'm a sucker for continuing storylines.

I wanted to catch the transformation sequences and that was it, but once I heard the headmistress (?) lay down the rules and the consequences that follow should the rules be violated, I shut the TV off and went to shower.

I don't think I will like this show, but my niece would probably like it.

People, cool it. I don't mind the scathing reviews of the show, since that's to be expected with a new show. However, when people start bashing other shows within the thread, and saying "Show X is so much superior to Show Y because..." it has to stop. I won't allow this thread to become a platform for discussing the qualities or lack thereof from other shows. This is a thread about Winx Club Episode 2, keep it that way.

Now, onto my response to an earlier question:

did anyone catch who is composing the music for Winx? From the end credits, which actually are in two different blocks on the screen. The ones relevant to the music are:

Music Produced by: John Siegler for the 4Kids Music Dept.
Associate Music Producer: Jonathan Lattif
Winx Theme Written by: Norman J. Grossfeld and John Siegler
Music Composed by: John Angier, Louis Cartelezzi, Matt McGuire, Ralph Schuckett, Jake Siegler, John Siegler, John Van Tongeren, Russel Velazquez, Alex Walker
Music Editor: Sue Shulfro
Additional Songs by: John Siegler

At least the whole 'who has what powers' topic has been settled. Should've examined the website more closely.

And yeah guys, come on! I don't care if you love or hate Winx Club, just keep other shows out of it, okay?

Hi,

I am from Italy, here the series is currently on air for the third time, every afternoon 5.15pm Mon. to Fri. and it is really a huge success.

In Europe, the show is a cult already for the tweens, but it is very popular among the Anime fans as well.

If you are interested to know, the series becomes very interesting and more action/paced expecially from episode 6 onward, furthermore there are some sequence of episoded, between 8 to 10 and between eps. 14 to 19, which you should not miss. At least this is for the original version, as I do not know what the US version looks like.

FYI the original one is by Iginio Straffi the most talented italian producer and director.

I think it would help if you put this in the most recent talkback instead of the one from the week before. Still, since I'm not sure you'll probably see it before I do the Episode 4 talkback tomorrow night, I wanna ask you something.

If you've read all the comments we've had for the first three episodes (and the sneak peek, if you've read that thread too), do you know if 4Kids and Fox Box is following the series to the letter thus far? You know, no major edits or skipped episodes?
