Where in the world do those bows come from? A toon mystery that may never be solved.

the bows symbolize stereotypical black female hair.

That's kind of a weak gag on Tex's part. Don't white females where bows in their hair too?

Yep...and we white boys (at least here in the South) love fried chicken and watermelon, but somehow that's equated with colored people/racism as well. Of course for my money Tex's weakest gag was dogs and fire hydrants (I have yet to see a dog relieve himself on one).

would you stereotype your own race? i've seen white people with afros, but blacks are more known for them. the bow is shot at black hair.

I'm, part native American, I might have reused gags in Scalp Trouble. Call that offending my own race, but that just goes to show you how weird I am. I'm just kidding! I wouldn't do that! But, that also shows you afraid I am of tv censores (if I made a cartoon show, that is).

I've had the uncensored version of this toon (Garden Gopher) forever. The gag comes and goes almost before you sort out everything. It appears done without any ill-will though (like all of Avery's) and as such qualifies much more as a "sick joke" than as an out-and-out racial joke.

Whites/Anglos do stereotype themselves much more then anybody can imagine. Everything from jokes about blandness and liking mayonaise to those about our historical nationalities (English, Irish etc.). And Tex made his share of jokes about them as well.

As a part-Indian (Choctaw, Cherokee etc.) I have no problem with ethnic jokes. The realities of life in America have actually resulted in a FAR GREATER racial admixture than almost any of us dream. It wasn't till I was in college and did some research, that I found that a complex study done back around 1960 had discovered this little nugget... That as of that date (1960) virtually every person of black descent in America, was already in the range of 20%-30% genetically white. Soooooo as such white Americans and black Americans as such are actually related. Iffffff we add in the English language we all share, and the common Anglo-American culture we mutually partake of, then the whole issue and idea of "race" starts falling apart.

the great joy of being american IS that we're (almost) all mutts - the more ethnic groups in one's background, the more you get to make fun of...

now excuse me while I have some schnapps and invade Poland...

or get drunk and start a barfight... (WITHOUT singing 'Roddy McCorley' - I'm (nominally) orange)

decisions, decisions...
