Have you ever heard the background music for a show and thought, "I love this stuff!"? Well, here, you can tell us which ones you like, and why. You don't really have to say why, though.
I'll be back with my response later.

American shows BGM are few and far inbetween. The Silver-Age WB shows like Animaniacs and Freakazoid had wonderful little orchestraic scores or something like such (and I wish they still had those same styles in the soundtracks as well as the shows.). The same goes with the DCAU's BGM.
But most of the good stuff when it comes to soundtracks are from anime.
Notables:
-Cowboy Bebop
-The Vision of Escaflowne
-Gundam SEED
-Azumanga Daioh

For movies The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. And of Course, South Park, Bigger Longer and Uncut.
For TV Gargoyles, The Simpsons, Spider-Man '94, Futurama, South Park, and Family Guy.
I am adding on, because I love the background music for Animaniacs, BATS, AND HISTERIA, it was mentioned in another forum, but not here. so here. Stuart

I'm going to add in two at least for BGM...and a third as well but two of these are Megas XLR (the snappy BGM with Guitar Solo is good and in the One episode of All I wanted was a Slushie, (When you got R.E.G.I.S. Mark V roaming around tat one cut for it is Killer Classical)
Then there is Kim Possible's BGM (a lot of Guitar) and if you think about some of the Episodes in Season 2 which are off the sound track (Most Notably the last 2 minutes of Hidden Talent where Kim actually Sings Say the Word) you know this one sticks in your mind..
and for Horror/Detective fans besides the Moody Dark Batman series. take a look at Adult Swim's Case Closed (Detective Conan) when you see a murder scene or a crime scene the BGM give away the clue this is the EVIL part..
but those three are perhaps some of the Better BGM cuts..but I have noted anyone with Guitar is going to be a cool show.

Do movies count? Because I've had 'Belleville Rendezvous' stuck in my head for nigh-onto infinity.
I also enjoyed 'Oogie Boogie's Song' from NBC. I mean really, how many people do you know that will not only kick your a**, but break into an elaborate song detailing how it will be kicked?

First off, I second anyone who said that Cowboy Bebop has great BGM. Hell, it's got great music period.
*cracks knuckles* Okay, here goes. The soundtrack to Secret of NIMH is, in my opinion, one of the absolute best and my personal favorite. Trust me, they don't make 'em like that anymore, at least not very often.
The soundtrack for Spirited Away is also beautiful. There are a few select pieces where you can close your eyes and just envision a serpentine dragon flying along in the sky.
And I must also mention the soundtrack for Robotech. Not the soundtracks for the original, separate anime series that Harmony Gold lumped together into Robotech, but the musical pieces composed for the series to replace the Japanese music. I know a lot of people are probably iffy on the vocal stuff (especially Minmei's songs), but the BGM is just gorgeous and bettered the scenes it was used in.

My god, where to begin? Well, I always liked the incidental scene-cutting music in Daria (though bein from England we're not really accustomed to decent pop rock like in the US), Ren and Stimpy always had some great classical BGM, which was probably not scored intentionally for the show, but there you go. The music in ANY Miyazaki movie gets my vote - my housemate thought I was takin the p*ss when I commented on the Spirited Away music, and the title theme from Laputa/Castle In The Sky gives me chills whenever i hear it... Oh, and the classic Warner Bros/Looney Tunes/MGM toons gave me my all-consuming love for big-band jazz and classical. so, there you go.

The Invader Zim soundtrack always rings a bell. Kevin Matheni is a great composer, his songs are really great for whatever mood, and sometimes it's just plain catchy (like the bee song!)

For animated movies, I enjoy the scores to BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM (I wish BATMAN & MR. FREEZE: SUBZERO had gotten a soundtrack release), THE SECRET OF NIMH (I'm a big Jerry Goldsmith fan), MULAN (another great Goldsmith score), THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, and a few others.
For TV cartoon scores, I love (and would like CD releases of) the music for THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS, G.I. JOE, TMNT (especially the new one), and BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES (if the craptastic BATMAN BEYOND can get a soundtrack release, why not the superior original?). G.I. JOE has been listed at Screenmusic.com (composer Robert Walsh's website) has having a soundtrack release "early this summer," but it's said that for about the past two years. I wish they'd hurry up and release it.

Actually, I know that some fan/or someone who worked on the show put together a CD about 2 years ago, it was sold on some internet website, copies ran out fast, but I thought there was some Official CD from Nick.

So many shows, I can't name them all.
If I could name one, I'd pick Toonami's soundtrack from inception all the way to late '02, when JBV stopped.

Actually when you think about Cartoon Music and comments about Japanese Amine/Cartoons being switched from Japan to America.. I got two good ones that Come to Mind.. Also any European Imports I take it would apply..
so I got at least 4...
First off in the Late 1960's Perhaps the most Well known Cartoon show was actually an marionation show Thunderbirds (Thunderbirds are Go or Thunderbirds FAB) you gotta love Military marching music.. I mean listen to the theme song of that and you go wow!
Next is that 1970's classic, Speed Racer.. (Yep the opening sequence song was good, and they used a lot of string in the BGM throughout the show (not to mention Brass, and things.. but the title Song sticks in your head..
Then in the Mid 1980's it was Robotech.. (Great Military theme it sounded like) and in fact it is was great for the Japanese music...
Also in the 1980's you had Transformers..(You could really go for a soong like that..)
and don't forget Thundercats.. and Silverhawks. Some of the best music from Rankin bass just helped those shows survive..
Of course Cowboy Bebop has some of the best music around.. I agree there.. and all nice Blends of different styles (Jazz, Pop, Heavy Metal.. )
but bring on the toons!

Don't laugh, but I've always enjoyed the music in Jetsons: The Movie although I'm never able to find it... at a good price anyway.

As has been mentioned, most of the best soundtracks are anime series and movies--most American productions don't put much emphasis on the music in the shows at any rate. If they did, CN would not be deleting the openings for commercial time.
One of my favorites is the soundtrack to the fist .Hack// series, along with The Last Unicorn and Prince of Egypt.

I 100% agree with this statement. Robotech: Perfect Soundtrack is the best album I've heard in my life. The composers have truly captured the atmosphere of the show with their breathtaking preformances. From the Zentradi fleet, to the battle grounds, right down to Roy Fokker's theme are spectacular.
