If you were assigned to the Storyboard in the recent ASJ - there was a change to the brief - I posted the reasons and details here (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=1274717&postcount=27). The people I'm calling out to are....

Amazing Spidey

Bubblegum Girl

Godiva

Pyro

Rune

BY1

Westlander

Suffice to say they still want YOU as artists, just they want something more specific! Reckon you can handle one more pic? If you can't that's fine. We ask a lot we know. Drawing Board mod Barb Gordon is running this at the Storyboard - I'll let her explain further:

Storyboard Background

Almost every story consists of universal basics elements, such as a Hero/Protagonist and a Villain/Antagonist. What the task before you is now, is to create “story blocks”, depicting some of these basic story elements. Each participating artist will pick which element they would like to tackle. We need the images in Black and White ONLY, but feel free to color a copy of it for use on the Drawing Board.

The blocks/images must be the following dimensions: SQUARE

Be as creative as possible! We’d like it if you did not use any actual existing characters…have fun, make up your own character or create a generic character that represents, for example, the stereotypical hero or villain.
These are the elements from which to choose from:

Hero
Villain/Monster
Damsel in Distress (feel free to have fun with this, you don’t have to stick to stereotypes for this one if you don’t want ;) )
Hero in Peril
Fight Scene
Love Scene
Death Scene

Naturally there is an extension to MID JUNE. Please help the Storyboard!

Have fun!!!

Let me know you've read this here - I'll chase people up by PM otherwise! Any questions throw below or PM me or Barb Gordon.

Rune

Okay Barb, if everyone's okay with it I'll take the damsel in distress one :)

Custom characters

I'll bagsey* Hero In Peril

*bagsey means request in Brit talk :D

it leaves

Hero
Fight Scene
Love Scene
Death Scene
Villain/Monster

to choose from....

Remember we need a composition in a rectangle in Black and white if you want to colour it for display here at the Drawing Board that's fine, but we need a Black and White for the background..!

EDIT: I've PM'd all members here so we should get feedback very soon!

Thanks again!

I take the love scene, period.

LOL. Great - thanks for your support W. You've done too many pics for this already (I have them all BTW).

So...

Go for what you want! :)

Are the story board absoloutly sure they want original characters? The SB allows stories involving already existing characters, I don't really see the point. And original characters (specifically my original characters) are usually dull...

Rune
05-29-2004, 01:38 PM
I believe the SB crew are fairly set on original characters so that it it doesn't look like any particular character or genre of characters is favoured / featured more than any other, but instead portrays elements common to most stories. I think its a good idea myself and its a nice change to use original characters, I really don't think your guy will look dull either Spidey so go for it :)

I have a quick and possibly silly - question too SJJ/Barb, namely would you prefer just an outline drawing or a grey shaded one for the completed picture? I mean I'm not sue whether to colour anything at all, colour it in greys or colour as normal and save it as a greyscale pic in PSP.

Barb Gordon
05-29-2004, 02:15 PM
Shading is okay, but just simple line drawing is nice too. I'm in favour of some shading so the picture has some character to it.

And thanks for answering Rune, you covered it for me! That's exactly why we don't want any specific known characters, to not have to worry about favoritism and have nothing but one or two characters in the background and literally hundreds others not recognized. Besides, the Story Board is also a place for original stories and characters, its a creative place, and the background should reflect that as well. You don't have to necessarily use your own original characters, make some up just for this pic if you want!

These are the scenes that have picked thus far:

Damsel in Distress - Rune
Love Scene - Westlander
Hero in Peril - Amazing Spidey

Four scenes left to choose from you remaining artists! I know we've asked a lot from you all, but you've all been great, so please stick it through with us!

~Barb

Godiva
05-29-2004, 02:15 PM
I'll take hero then

Westlander
05-29-2004, 02:44 PM
OK, black & white, but can it be shaded?

Barb Gordon
05-29-2004, 03:33 PM
heh, yes hon, like I said above, it can be shaded. But what kind of shading are you thinking of...the whole pic, or just accent areas? When I say shading is okay, I mean if done on certain parts of the pic, but not the entire peice.
yay got another block taken!

Damsel in Distress - Rune
Love Scene - Westlander
Hero in Peril - Amazing Spidey
Hero - Godiva

three more choices left you three remaining artists! Remember, due to all the changes and such, the deadline is extended till Mid-June...so don't worry about not having enough time.

Slight shading is okay, if you want - but make it clear enough that it can be viewed and discerned for what it is at a very small size. :)

Thanks for sticking wiht us, folks!

Westlander
05-29-2004, 03:43 PM
Sent! I meant shading hair and parts of clothes, and in the test run it's still good. Ofc if you accept knightly mr Westlander as a "hero".

Bubblegum Girl
05-29-2004, 05:55 PM
I'm sorta cofused on this(Maybe someone could PM me on the details..) but I'll take the Villian/Monster one. :D

Barb Gordon
05-29-2004, 07:10 PM
No worries hon. I'll try and help out here, just in case anyone else is a little miffed.
Okay, they're called "story blocks" because each drawing will be a square.
You get to pick a scene that we have listed. Each scene is a story element, something that almost all stories have in their makeup.
For example, you could draw just a heroic looking guy for the Hero element, and that would be it, nothing else to do. The dimensions of the picture just need to be SQUARE. Talk to SJJ if you have any more questions concerning dimensions.
Does that help at all?

~Barb

James

Before people think they are going crazy, yeah I did change the size from rectangle to Square.. Westlander - yours actually works better as a square. This was a miscommunication between myself and Barb, but yours lending itself so much better to square tipped us in favour of making the change at this late stage!

I'll PM you all and make sure you are aware of the changes!

Thanks again! Quite, frankly this has been a messy month - I'll be glad when it's done.. till then I'll blame it on the jetlag...

Barb Gordon

These are the "blocks" that have been taken so far:

Damsel in Distress - Rune
Love Scene - Westlander
Hero in Peril - Amazing Spidey
Hero - Godiva
Villain/Monster - Bubblegum Girl

That only leaves two artists and elements left to choose! Basically whoever chooses the next one will automatically default the last artist to have to do whatever is left over. So pick now! These are the two remaining elements to do:

Fight Scene
Death Scene

I've already seen Westy's, and it's great....just perfect! I am so eager to see the others as they come in. You've all been so awesome about this.

Erm, calm down, mate no one is asking you for another one - as I said in the PM, don't worry about the size - we'll deal with that. We're happy with what we have. Thank you again.

Errr, I can pinch-hit for someone if you need a drawing done by the end of Monday. I should have my DB one today and could do similar tomorrow if you're short on volunteers. :)

Thanks Tim. We're bare that in mind if that becomes an issue. We've extended this to mid June for the SB artists, so they have a little longer to respond yet. Your input, as always, is appreciated.

I'm just leaving a note to say that Amazing Spidey asked me personally to take his place, as he was having trouble with juggling his picture and current busy state of affairs.

Hero in Peril was his selected piece, eh? *PONDERS*

'Tis an honour to be working in his stead. *BOWS*

Ack, hang on - BubbleGumGirl said she'd do the Villain/Monster back on Post 15 of this thread so that leaves the Fight Scene in the hands of BY1.

Hero - Godiva
Villain/Monster - Bubblegum Girl
Hero in Peril - TimTwoFace (originally Amazing Spidey)
Damsel in Distress - Rune
Love Scene - Westlander
Fight Scene - BY1
Death Scene - Pyro

Right - just looking at the two entries from Tim and Pyro have just noticed a glaring error. Both are in colour. The shape isn't an issue, but the Storyboard specifically asked for black and white line. Read the brief people - if you submit work to any company and don't comply to the briefs you won't get the money and you'll be looking at building up a bad rep...

The Story Board are unwilling to use either entries because of this big discrepancies. Which is a pity as both are very good. We are sorry for being harsh, but they have a point: This is not just an ASJ - this is for an indefinate background - it has to follow the requirements if it's going to have anysort of coherancy of pattern.

Sorry for not noticing it till now, but dealing with two lots of Storyboard entries, Drawing Board entries and everything else has thrown me a little out of whack. I've tried greyscale versions, but the Story Board is adamant they want Black and White - fair enough, the Drawing Board is acting as an agency for their work, if the client says no, then that's fine. Naturally they will be in the Drawing Board Website gallery and displayed here, but they won't be on the final wallpaper in the Story Board. Sorry guys. Good pics nevertheless.

I'm awaiting specific details from the Story Board crew, but I believe they will replace those two missing spots.

ANYWAy... Bubblegumgirl and BY1 - you are the final two!! I'll PM you so you get this reminder! If we could have it buy FRIDAY that would be wonderful! Thanks!

Remember - BLACK AND WHITE line drawing, SQUARE

Eeep...when I took on that pic I wasn't informed that it had to be black & white.

I can come up with another one real quick if you want. Or, failing that - couldn't you just use photoshop to make those two pics black & white?

I waiting back on the Storyboard to confirm on the next move. I have an artist already working on a back up. Hold back on that.

Fraid not, it has to be black and white line - as stated at the beginning of the thread. The SB team are adamant on that - and with good cause.

Yeah sorry.. I have a pic I don't have a TZ name on.. since you said you were ready and in colour thought it was you.. which is a blessing in disguise as now I know yours will be in Black & White...

Drawing Board, Storyboard... changes... too much for one Brit on top of his usual day to day work... *cries*...

Okay...

Bubblegumgirl pulled out (and I wasn't crazy I didn't miss a post confirming that!) - that's cool... Silverknight is working in her place...

Well SJJ, as I promised, I did TWO new pics for the ASJ. One was a strict pencilling of the coloured one I already goofed on sending in, and another is a completely original creation. Now I just need to get my $%*@&!!! scanner to work, and you'll have it in your clutches in a matter of seconds.

Absolutely, it was a night where everything I was dealing with was falling apart - there was no intent to feel guilty - although there was a tiny hint of self pity there... :) Me me me me me me.

It is finished!!!!

A great big wonderful thanks to all of the DB artists who helped make the Story Board background. It is truly such a beautiful and original peice of work! All of my fellow SB mods humbly thank you for all your work....and as a mod of both here and the SB..let's just say I'm thrilled to know and be around such talented artists and have their prescence over at the SB.

Again, thank you so so so much. And please go check out your work over at the Story Board! There's a thread concerning just the background, so please feel free to comment.

THANKS

At last :D

The SB looks great. The new theme seems to sit really well and it was obviously worth the long deliberation to get exactly what Barb & Co wanted.

The album pieces really compliment each other too, (as well they might) some lovely work there.

Godiva: what I really like about it is the lines are so clean and simple yet with the dark shaded areas of mask, boots etc the piece really leaps off the page at you, almost iconic.

SJJ: how did I know you'd be Mr Death? The expression on the Prince's face is so human it almost breaks my heart, wonderful tragic stuff ... the ink is ace but this one soooo needs a coloured version too.

SK: Yay for Seph! Lovely, smokey, atmospheric picture, and inked to die for as usual. This one makes just me want to imagine evil laughter in the background ... *ahem*

BY1: There's so much action going on in this one I just love it, the figures look so dynamic set against the background skull. This also screams 'colour me!' :)

Westie: I really like the guy's profile on this one and the subtle shading on his jaw and arms works wonders. Very nice gentle piece that works so well in contrast to everyone elses.

Pyro: I was imagining all sorts of fates for the hero but certainly didn't imagine that one :D Great design, the dark figure of the executioner and the shadows under the woodwork make this another 'jumps out at you' pic.

Great work everyone

Pyro

Pyro: I was imagining all sorts of fates for the hero but certainly didn't imagine that one :D Great design, the dark figure of the executioner and the shadows under the woodwork make this another 'jumps out at you' pic. Actually my pic was supposed to be the death scene, and TimTwoFace was supposed to Hero in Peril.:p But SJJ's death scene was what I originally wanted to do and it looks great. And mine works as Hero in Peril, though if I'd had that in mind, I would have made it an easier situation to get out of!
