Uh oh...
Study: Texas kids among the most overweight
Black, Hispanic children at highest risk for obesity

HOUSTON - Texas children are among the fattest in the nation, with black and Hispanic kids at the highest risk for being overweight, a study shows.
Texas fourth-graders were overweight at a rate 46 percent higher than children of similar age nationally, said Deanna Hoelscher, principal investigator of study, conducted by the University of Texas School of Public Health.
“Parents do need to watch this in their kids,” she said. “What this means is being overweight is a health risk for kids. Parents need to look at that as something they need to take some measures to prevent.”
Researchers collected data from more than 6,000 students in 30 school districts and 132 schools throughout Texas from 1999 to 2001. Hoelscher said the study is one of the first to gather statewide data based on measured height and weight of elementary and secondary students.
22 percent of fourth-graders overweight
The study considered fourth-graders overweight if they were 10 pounds heavier than the national average. Average for a fourth-grade girl who is 4 feet tall, for example, was 64 pounds. The margin for being overweight was 20 pounds for eighth-graders and 30 pounds for 11th-graders.
The study, to be published in next month’s American Journal of Public Health, found 22 percent of fourth-graders, 19 percent of eighth-graders and nearly 16 percent of 11th-graders were overweight. Data from the study’s first year was released Thursday.
Hoelscher said national figures aren’t broken up by specific school grades but the most recent ones show 15.3 percent of children ages 6 to 11 were overweight, while 15.5 percent of kids ages 12 to 19 were carrying extra pounds.
How come all of the suddent people are obsessing with everyone being fat?

SUPER SIZE ME!
Actually I think too many people try to pass off obesity as normal, or even healthy. It is not. Especially at a young age--kids shouldn't be obese. Having some meat, like Lindsay Lohan does, is a good thing. But being like one of those gi-normous secretaries in those dingy run-down businesses on the bad side of town is never a good thing.
Now, I've heard of chemicals and wacky metabolisms as causes too, but by and large most of it is caused by too much eating, too many times a day.

You guys don't understand how unbearably hot the Texas Summers are. Even the animals don't want to be outside! :p I can remember the hottest Summer I ever lived through -- the central Texas drought of 1998 -- there was a 21 day period that Summer where the temperature was over 110 degrees F -- every day. The day it was 115 F (and that's the temperature they take out in the open air of the airport; it's actually hotter than that inside the concrete jungle of the cities) I thought I was going to die just going to my mailbox and back...
YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN TEXAS DURING THE SUMMERTIME WHEN:
1. The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
2. Hot water now comes out of both taps.
3. You can make sun tea instantly.
4. You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
5. The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.
6. You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
7. You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
8. You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
9. You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 AM.
10. Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
11. You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
12. The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
13. The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter, salt, and pepper to it.
14. Farmers are feeding their chicken's crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.
15. The cows are giving evaporated milk.
16. The trees are whistling for the dogs.

One reason why people in Texas are so fat is because everyone's comfortable with it.
When I go to the mall I'm disgusted when I see women with the biggest cottage cheese thighs wearing daisy duke shorts.
Combine that with the over abundance of all you can eat buffet.
-The lack of decent gyms.
-The lack of outdoor activity (because as Squall mentioned, it's hot as hell during the summer)
-Again- The lack of outdoor activity (because the only cities that have anything to do are Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, Austin... and all the other cities with a population of 200,000 or more. And even in those cities they don't do anything to lose weight)

On the flash: That guy does have a screwy humor (as a cartoon character notes: I like him, he's silly!).
You guys took the words out of my mouth, but I just had to make an opinion about the flash. Man was that funny!

Salad by itself is healthy, but not the way they do it in those hamburger places. They put a lot of dressing and stuff on it, so in the end eating a salad really doesn't do much good, unless people try to eat it plain. And most people don't want to do that.

There's restaurants practically everywhere (I live outside of Houston). The high obesity rate not only here in TX, but in America in general, can be stopped if only we popped open a cookbook and exercised.
Is it true that they put steroids in our food at some restaurants?

See, the problem is that Houston drags the rest of us down. I know Austin is actually one of the fittest cities in the country, and I believe Dallas does pretty well, too.
The whole thing makes me and my state look very bad. I'm in good shape, and I work hard to stay that way, goshdarnit! :p

Ugh. Worst. Summer. Ever. Me and my friend switched to a full nocturnal schedule to beat the heat, and it still didn't help. I went to Japan for a year at the end of that summer, and I couldn't have been more thankful for the transition.
Seriously, folks, Texas summers are genuinely awful.

Yeah, it's not a 'dry heat' like they have in Arizona; it's 100+ F heat with 100% humidity... at 3 am! :(
Like my grandmother says, "At least in the cold you can put more clothes on. In the heat, there are only so many clothes you can take off..."
