If you were born prior to 1970, pls allow the younger ones first shot at this one...

In 'The Daffy Doc', both Daffy and Porky spend some time in a large cylinder, after which thier heads and bodies alternately inflate and deflate like ballons.

What was this device/what did it do/why is it no longer in use?

I haven't seen this cartoon in a while, but is it an artificial lung? As for why it's no longer in use, I dunno...

Okay Dave~

"Younger one" PorkyandDaffy already responded, so can I put in my 2-cents worth now??

It was actually known as the "IRON LUNG" and was of course an artificial lung/breathing machine. Today it's been replaced by such contrivances as "respirators" and "ventilators". As to WHY the wonderfully cartoony "IRON LUNG" went bye-bye you'll get to tell us all...

Now a question for YOU... What actor's life was saved by the "IRON LUNG" though his career was virtually ruined for twenty years 'cause of the time spent in it???

yep - 'iron lung' was the name I knew for it - it was necessitated by the fact that Poliomyelitis (aka 'polio') paralized (among other) the diaphram muscle, which is tha massive muscle enclosing the bottom of the ribcage - its expansion and contraction cause you to inhale and exhale - polio victems could not breath unassisted - they spent much-to-all of their lives in these nightmarish devices.

it was made obsolete by the Saulk vaccine for Polio,

modern respirators and ventilators are designed for short-term treatment - don't know if they could perform the continous duty the iron lungs did.

Awwwww shucks... How about a final gaggle of clues...

Your LEAST favorite Warner cartoon star ;o)

This actor was almost the star of a mega-classic film that is still making money for its current owner AOL-Time-Warner. (Ended up in the Iron Lung because of this film).

His TV character shares the last name of a certain favorite Warner Bros. cartoon director...

Naw Dave, I'd be concerned you'd have the same thing happen to you as the gentleman who found "this reallllllly cool lizard" (read Gila Monster) and tried to take it home... In his shirt!!!

Wasn't a pretty end... Can't have that happen to you!

TRUST ME:D

actually, I have a gila story:

a brother-in-law (now estranged) was once a USMC officer assigned to training (characterizations omitted).

he once had a group in the desert when a recruit came up to him and said 'Look what I found' (quite proud of himself). He was upset to be ordered to throw it as far as he could, but as my b-n-l is not someone with whom many argue, he did it.

when informed what it was he had just been holding, he went from caucasian to absolute WHITE.

rest well, your armed services are alert (kinda)...
