Since I'm borrowing my cousin's PS2 I was thinking of picking up MGS2: Sons of Liberty. Having the Twin Snakes (which is basically just an upgraded version of MGS1) I'm interested in seeing where the storyline goes, but I heard you don't play as Snake that often. What's up with that?

Well, if you really want to know, and this is kind of a big spoiler:
You play as Snake only for the Tanker chapter, which is very short. For the Plant chapter, which is basically where most of the game will take place, you'll play as someone else.

If you want to play as Snake more in MGS2 buy MGS2:Substance. You can pick it up for $15.

What's the difference between Sons of Liberty and Substance?

There are additional mini missions in Substance. And Rattrap noted, you're able to play as Snake through the entire game, as opposed to less than a third of the game in SoL.

You start off as Snake, but then switch to Raiden. It kinda pissed me off, but Raiden turned out to be pretty cool. Not Snake cool, but cool none the less.

And a word of warning. It's a short game. Very short. It took me 6 hours to beat it the first time, including the 1-2 hours of cut scenes and dialogue breaks.

That's the problem I had with MGS1, the cutscenes were way too long (though the ones with Gray Fox were awesome)

I also heard you can play as Raiden in the Tanker chapter in addition to playing as Snake in the Plant chapter. Are the cutscenes different when playing as Snake or Raiden in the Tanker and Plant chapters

Who cares, play it for yourself and find out if you like Raiden better. I do because he has cooler moves like the cart wheel, and the one of the last parts is just funny because you are butt naked.
I hope Raiden returns in the next MGS that actually takes place after MGS2. I'm really pissed they made MGS3 a freakin' prequel.

This is probably the last game where you won't play as Snake for the majority [excluding MGS3] This was one of the biggest issues many people had with the game. I didn't like Raiden, but I didn't dislike him. He had an interesting story, its just he wasn't Snake. I'm actually not THAT interested in 3, as I want 4 more. The ending to 2 made me want a sequel right away [just like MGS1]

OK, I just finished Sons of Liberty and intend to pick Substance up some time. I must say it was a great game indeed, though I like MGS1 better. Anyway MGS3 better be good. But the ending of Sons of Liberty had me slighty confused. The Patriots? What the hell is up with that? And the Colonel and Rose been AIs all along. Then the real Rose shows up at the end. (does this mean the real Colonel is dead?) And I rather mad MGS3 won't be solving the whole the Patriots lived a 100 years ago thing. And it is unknown as to who the "Snake" you play as in MGS3 is really the Snake we all know and love or not. Hopefully MGS4 will have you play as Snake the whole game, since I enjoyed playing as him more than Raiden. Oh and the scene with Otacon and Emma has got to be the saddest scene I've ever seen in a video game. I just wish the cutscenes weren't so long.

That should help you figure out alot of the stuff in the game.

I'm intending on picking up MGS: Substance to get prepared for Snake Eater. Since you can now play as Snake throughout the whole game, can anyone tell me if the cutscenes are now different (i.e. in replace of Raiden, Snake is now in every codec conversation, cinematic, etc.)

Also, is it possible to play as Raiden the whole game? Same questions above applies here as well if the answer is yes.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

It was a mistake for me to get Sons of Liberty I should of gotten Substance but I didn't know about it cause it did not come out until after Sons of Liberty. I did not want to play some blond haired guy who shouldn't be there. Look I want to play Snake my favorite. Everyone out there who doesn't have MGS2 get Substance. Its the same thing except you can either play Snake the whole game or Raiden.

I think what they're talking about more Snake is the Snake Tales missions where you play as Snake, I don't think they mean you can play as Snake in the Sons of Liberty game

People say that you can play as Snake the entire game in Substance, unlike Sons of Liberty, but other people say you play as Snake in the Snakes Tales missions. Which one is true?

No you can't. I've been looking for it everywhere, it no longer exists.

It must be your area....because I just bought it a few days ago. :)

And if anyone can answer that question (if you can play as Snake in the whole game), it would be appreciated. I don't plan to open it for a long time (I'm playing the whole series all the way through, meaning I'm waiting for Snake Eater to come out).
