Yeah. It's true. But he's better now--money and success can do wonders for depressions.

whoa yeah the series gets serious after ep 12, but it was kinda light hearted before.

The Evangelion series is basically about exploring the dark side of the human mind.

His later series, Kare-Kano continues the mind exploration schtick, but it's much more upbeat and optimistic than Evangelion. I think it's safe to say he was in a much happier mood doing Kare-Kano.
