But Funimation made the decision to change names, not CN and Williams.
At least FUNi chose names that are sorta similar to the Japanese names, instead of making up names out of thin air (Yolei in Digimon anyone?).

Please. If you like the show, just like the show. Don't explain why "it won't work on AS." If the point even warranted being made in the first place, it's been well beaten into the ground by now. Besides, maybe if we keep really quiet about it, they won't notice that it "doesn't fit AS," and it can stay on the block and we can continue to enjoy it.

This show isn't gonna last...

episodic and it has dated animation...

Matt Wilson: Is this how I looked in the Popeye thread? Geesh... my apologies...

Artimus: apologies for singling out your post as the example.

Also I really find it strange that he wants to be the next SH when SH is a fictional character, not to mention lived a few centuries back...it's sorta like saying "I'm gonna be the next King Authur!" or somthing...

I don't see it as being that strange. He really likes Sherlock Holmes, wishes to and does emulate the character, and gets a bit carried away at times, such that he forgets that Sherlock is fictional.

Also, Sherlock Holmes was only about one century or so back, and, as the style and occupation of Sherlock has not been rendered obsolete, I don't see how the "King Arthur" comparison holds water.

I think it would have been better if DC was a bit more related to Holmes and faced old nemesis' or somthing, time travel flux or whatever, because really it's as episodic as you can get, yeah some of the cases are mature themed, only it feels like a Scooby Doo episode minus the demasking...

A link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edogawa_Rampo) you(well, actually anybody) oughta check out(as a starting point, if nothing else). It helps to explain a little bit about Conan's chosen last name, and some of the structure of the series. DC/CC is somewhat related to Holmes in deductive style and slight eccentricities, but it also traces much of its lineage to the work of Rampo Edogawa, a Japanese writer from the first half of last century, who wrote a lot of detective fiction. He is perhaps best known for a series of stories featuring Kogoro Akechi, who solved mysteries with the help of Yoshio Kobayashi(and his friends, who, together, formed the "Shonentanteidan," or Junior Detective Group).

But what's wrong with episodic? Sherlock Holmes was born in episodic fashion, if memory serves.

(Can't we agree on anything, Artimus? :¬})

damn...my evil plot exposed...

i would love it if this show got cancelled. not that it's completely worthless, it's just that it's not quite adult enough for adult swim. compare it with cowboy bebop, trigun or big O...the content and art are total puff.

if you have a bock dedicated to adult material, it makes sense that you would want to fill it with adult material.

Grow up.

Wait wait wait....

I just finished watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force, an Adult Swim show.
And now Cowboy Bebop, an Adult Swim show, is starting.

... so what block was that last half hour a part of? SVES?

Seriously, I'm enjoying the show, but... I thought it was Adult Swim.

See above.

WTF is with these comparisons to Lupin?!

How about comparisons to Yu Yu Hakusho, since CONAN AND YYH ACTUALLY CAME FROM THE SAME FARKING DECADE?! Their production values are very similar, except that TMS is much better at character animation, as anybody who's watched other TMS shows would know. The music is also much better than YYH's.

Where does the Lupin comparison come in? The music isn't dated, just muffled. The artwork isn't 70s style or faded or in need of remastering, it looks just fine, and would fit alongside any other anime out there.

You just aren't used to seeing CEL ANIMATION, and after watching so many animes with digital ink and paint, you see any hand-drawn show as being "old like Lupin". Give me a break.

Great, another person who thinks "adult" means violence and sex.

I get insanely scared whenever I agree with everything you say, Matt. I am crying like a baby right now.

Oh, right. Because the only anime that fit on Adult Swim anymore involve whiny emo characters with bishounen (or not; WHR) designs that manage to make a 5 minute script last 23 minutes.

Sorry for forgetting.

Bawling like a damned toddler...

Hm.

Cowboy Bebop episode 2 is about a lost dog that Spike chases around. That's not adult.

Therefore, Cowboy Bebop is not adult.

Infallible logic.

Hiding under the covers...

So if the murder cases were slow paced murder cases the show would be "adult?" Well since they don't have that, I suppose they could be "adult" by discussing the philiosphical nature of being turned into a little kid. If all else fails they could shoot stuff because blood & gore = "adult".

With these apparent standards for stuff being "adult" then I guess that if I ever have to babysit that I should pop in some "Murder She Wrote" tapes or "Matlock." Who do you need when kids are in danger of being bored? You need Perry Mason.

That was awesome. "Who do you need when kids are in danger of being bored? You need Perry Mason."

I might sig that.

Rachel finding out about Jimmy would equate to David and Maddie getting together on Moonlighting. It's one of those things that really shouldn't be done until the series is wrapping up. Unless they killed her after she found out, that would work but I like Rachel too much so it's the whole series wrapping up thing.

Moonlighting reference... nice. :¬)

After looking at another screen cap. Man that poor guy! It appears the blade some how twisted a bit after the police men arrived to take photos of the crime scene. Ouch! (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Temp/blade.jpg)

Actually, I think it's just the slightly different angle we have on the body. The knife looks like it might not have had its perspective changed properly, but it's close enough. (for me, anyway :¬)

This show snuck up on me. I had totally forgotten that it was coming, and only managed to catch it at the first episode by accident. Thus, I wasn't expecting anything of it either way. So which way did I end up going? Liking it.

Kinda loving it, actually.

So far, it's showing itself to be clever, and deeply interested in its characters. Even the one-shotters are getting decent play.

I may be a bit biased in favor of this show, though. I'm a nut for noir fiction, and also love the Holmes stories. I'm looking forward to seeing it each night.

I think the animation of the latest episode was quite crisp and didn't look too dated by any means.

I personally am beginning to like Case Closed. I believe it has a lot of potential. The characters are people you can relate to, and it seems a lot more real life than other shows that air. The closest series I can relate to someone currently on AS is Family Guy. Now I have two series I can do that with. I also think it will end up having the ability to bring over some of the Law & Order and CSI fans, which means that AS ratings could grow higher than ever before.

For those that don't like the name changes, at least FUNImation contacted the original creator and worked with him on coming up with American names that they could agree with, as well as the new name for the show. If you want to complain, go ahead, but the original shows creator oked them before it was ever dubbed.

As for this being Toonami quality, with a TV 14 rating, then it's actually too old to be on Toonami until they actually let TV PG stuff slip in, because TV PG comes before TV 14, so AS is the only place it could air. FUNI said they wanted it to go to AS, so I don't see it moving, especially with FUNI dubbing Full Metal Alchemist for AS now. It looks like they are shifting their focus more to adults now with their Anime dubs, and not the young kids or teens.

Now, many of us may wonder who the VA's are. I know 6 for certain, and I can't figure out which of the remaining 3 goes with which character because they are all fairly new to the VA scene. Here they are:

Jerry Jewell- Jimmy Kudo
Monica Rial- Amy
Dameon Clarke- George
Cynthia Cranz- Mitch
Colleen Clinkenbeard- Rachel Moore
Alison Retzloff- Conan Edagawa

Bill Flynn, Mark Stoddard, & R. Bruce Elliot- Dr. Agasa, Richard Moore, & Inspector Meguire, but I don't know which man does which part. If anyone's seen Kiddy Grade, then they may be able to say which one Mark Stoddard does, because he does VA for Kiddy Grade as well, but the other two are brand new on the scene. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, Case Closed is actually down for 12:30 AM all next month. They just haven't updated it on the schedule yet, but it says so at adutswim.com's forums. ATHF is supposed to remain airing at 12 AM throughout June. Inuyasha reruns aren't supposed to return until July, and they are supposedly going to take over ATHF's spot then with Case Closed staying at 12:30 for at least the first run at that time.

Well last night was another entertaining episode of CC. I had to watch it twice to get all that happened in the episode, but this time around I actually came to the conclusion of the mystery right when Conan did. Ingenious.

So Conan is still frustrated with the fact that he hasn't gotten any closer to the men in black who poisoned him, and with the fact that he has to attend elementary school where he meets Amy, Mitch and George who want to be friends with him.

Conan gets his first gadget from Dr. Agasa, a new bowtie that works as a voice modifier. So now Conan can sound like any person he'd like, obviously that will come in handy, as during the case he uses it to sound like a deep voice to get the inspector's attention to the earing under the furniture and then modifying his voice to sound like Mr. Moore's (after knocking him out of course. ;) ) and solving the case.

It was an interesting mystery, the killed guy in the apartment of the idol turns out to be the highschool boyfriend who still loved her and broke up with her only because her manager asked him too and then was rejected by her former partner who he thought was her and commited suicide using a block of ice. I totally didn't expect that with the clue being ice, and it ended up being a key factor to the whole mystery. Not to mention the huge knife that was in his back.. What a way to go.

So it's nice to see the struggles Conan has to deal with now that he's short and presumed to be little. Nice little introduction of the kids who will be recurring characters. And it was interesting to see Rachel looking at Conan as he relaxed after that speech. Now just what did she see? .. I'm sure she's confused that's for sure. :anime:

And was that a great ending or what? Conan knowing how sad and worried Rachel is, sneaks out and calls her, using the bowtie to sound like Jimmy again. Telling her he was on a case (which he is) and he hopes to solve it ("hope to? Go solve it already Jimmy!") so she wouldn't worry as much. Nice touch especially with Conan's thoughts that ended the episode "Rachel, I'll do it soon, so then I can tell you how I really feel with my own voice." :)

Next episode's Clue: Neon Sign

I give "Beware of Idols" an A.

This is like saying "How come Batman never finds the person who murdered his parents?"
However Batman doesn't turn into a kid and spends his entire legacy since then trying to find a cure for this 'ailment'.

So far it looks like Rachel (Ran) is the character around whom everything else will revolve. Anime and live action are sometimes like that, where a supporting character is actually the linchpin holding everything else together. I think she'll become a major USA fan favorite. She's not really a hottie, more like a sweetie -- the kind of girl everyone would want for a sister. (^_*)

I've been trying to give this show a chance, but the mysteries themselves are just a bit painful to watch.

Last night was a good example. I'll admit, I liked how he pointed out the Statue of Liberty lighter without breaking his role as a kid. But there's one really, really big flaw in the whole mystery.

Where the hell did he get a block of ice with a knife in it?

Did the young lady just keep her knives in iceblocks in the freezer? Did the guy carry around a chunk of ice with a knife embedded inside, just in case he felt like committing suicide? Or did he decide to kill himself, mount a knife in a box, fill it with water and wait a few hours while it froze before committing suicide?

Hmm, good point.

Her ex-boyfriend did state in his diary that he was going to tell her about his feelings, once and for all. I guess if she still rejected him, he would fall back to this plan of killing himself. So he could have premade that block of ice with a dandy sharp metal point in advance and had it nearby. Although, it did appear that it was the idol's kitchen knife was stuck in him. So he must have frozen it at the apartment... which I agree makes very little sense unless she has a really cold freezer :D

Last night's was great, too. I can absolutely see why Fox decided to not follow through with this show. ^^; I like the cast a lot, they're interacting pretty well. I'm interested to see where the story goes, I just hope they can keep up the show's quality. Considering the ratings in Japan, I guess they do.

Funi's dub is really good, all of the voices sound great. Except, I can't understand a word of the ending theme. After listening to it a few times, I think it's in English. I dunno what they're doing to make the singer's voice so distorted, but it's a pain.

blitzkrieg
05-27-2004, 05:35 PM
It's pretty obvious that the suicide was meant to be seen as a homocide and to frame the singer. So it's safe to assume that he had it all ploted out in case he was rejected. He could easily had pre-frozen the ice block and it's never said that he killed him right after the encounter with the woman he thought was the singer. Depending on how long it was he could have easily gone to his house, retrieved the block, and then came back and set it up.

So really there's no flaw there.

Things that annoy me about Detective Conan (O Brien)

1. The main plot moves slower than Inu-Yasha. But that's okay, seeing as it will eventually become irrelevant for the most part. So it's not THAT big a deal.

2. At the beggining, it's about to go to the OP, but the WS "We hate ani-may" brigade cuts it at an awkward spot.

Other than that, it's a nice change of pace from the heaps of angst WS seems determined to poison ASA with.

B+.

Oh, and Batman did find his parent's muderer. But he decided in the end that it wasn't enough. He had to make sure no one went through what he did.

Okay... this episode wasn't adult.

I still don't care, though. I loved it. Too bad it's bound to tick people off. The OMG factor was quite high.

I don't know about everyone else, but I was glued to my seat trying to figure out all those shapes and neon lights.

I was wondering about the possibility of a little girl being interested in Jimmy... that's no good. Quite an unusual predicament...
Another thing I wonder about is whether or not Jimmy might experience a physical attraction to the girl, since he's in a little boy's body. Now THAT would be messed up.

Are you referring to me? If so, then I am sorry. I just wanted to know why he thought what he thought about the show.  :(Oh no, I was referring to one who mentioned the "LAME Scbooby [sic] Doo tipe [sic] mysters [sic]."

Cute episode. Not really adult but I enjoyed it anyway. Since this is a family show in Japan, I guess they toss one in for the kids every now and then. It also introduced the Jr. Detective League idea. Looks like the next episode'll get back to the adult-level mysteries.

And yes, gold is heavy. The thieves stole 15,000 Canadian Maple Leaf coins, which each contain an ounce of gold. So each of those bags weighed around 300 lbs. You drop that on you from about a 10-12 ft. height and it will definitely hurt. (^_*)

Conan finds out what Oro means!!!

Yay, I am not the only one who though about Kenshin :D Anyway back to Case Closed. Not as serious as the previous episodes and I thought it would be bad... which turns out to be a nice light hearted adventure for the Junior Detective League!

The clue was Neon sign... Dang it! When Conan first pointed out the regular signs, I thought that "neon sign" hint was refering to them. But it didn't seem to fit well. When Conan pointed out again that the moon symbol was of real importance, I was banging my head against the wall. The clue makes sense!!!

Arg anyway next episode clue is cellphone. I wonder why there was English text there instead of Katakana or Kanji?

Favorite scenes. The department store scene of course. Also this scene of the Junior Detective League springing into action! (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/wizardgrey/images/Detective%20Conan/jrcrew.jpg)

I guess bags of money falling from the sky is a bad thing. Hmm, I should tell Rakudah about this...

OK, just some stuff to say.

1. Just a little script alteration: when the boys scolded Conan for saying "ironic" to Amy, originally the boys were scolding Conan for not trusting Amy's word that the paper is a treasure map. That's because the two boys treat Amy on a pedestal, if you know what I mean. ;) :D

2a. Just to make clear, as fatboy George said, that's the Toto Tower, not the Tokyo Tower.

2b. Also, that was really an Italian gang, although originally, one of the 3 thugs is also Japanese (the only one who speaks), ergo he was able to talk to the Japanese kids.

3. Heh, Conan thought of the upside-down triangle as a panty - just goes to show how his mind works. :D
Then again, this show has its share of underwear scenes just in its first week!

4. According to the sign, the aquarium was 3 km. from where the kids were. Just goes to show the distances they had to cover that day and night. (But where were their parents? "It's 10pm; do you know where your children are?" :D )

5. Actually, the OP theme spoiled Amy's kiss. So by not showing the OP theme, AS actually preserved the suspense for you guys. (chu = sound of kiss) :)

6. As I cited earlier, these "Junior Detectives" eps only come once in a while, probably just to keep the younger watchers in Japan interested (Detective Conan is a family show there), according to Dave Baranyi.

As can be surmised from the preview, the next ep would be a Conan/Jimmy x Rachel moment ep. :o

...well, I'm quite confident I heard somewhere else that gold is really heavy. Probably some smart-alecky comment about some other show where crooks steal gold from Fort Knox.

Gold is 19x as dense as water. So fill those black bags in Case Closed with water, then multiply the weight by 19. A bag can get quite heavy.

Well todays episode wasnt too bad, but not as good as yesterdays episode IMO. The Junior Detective League is pretty annoying. At least the Fat Kid... Hes like a Younger Fat version of Rachels dad. :( I did find it funny that it was an Italian gang... The next episode seems better though

Rachel's dad is not as space case as he looks sometimes, as we'll find out. :)
And that was really an Italian gang.

Conan finds out what Oro means!!!

Yay, I am not the only one who though about Kenshin :D

Hey, while originally all the kids thought it was an English word, with Amy even complimenting Mitch for "deciphering" it as an English acronym. Different perspectives on either side of the ocean. :D

Arg anyway next episode clue is cellphone. I wonder why there was English text there instead of Katakana or Kanji?

You mean, at the bottom of the scene? That's the way it is in the original. :)

Exactly why I put it up. I was suprised I found that picture. I've been pimping it on the AS official boards to anyone who hate Inuyasha being replaced by Case Closed. I say "Conan is Inuyasha's friend, and a friend of Inuyasha's should be your friend as well right?"
So how do the rabid fans react to the pic?

Ah, Sampo, the Conan in the "spring into action" pic is extra cute.

OK, just some stuff to say.

2a. Just to make clear, as fatboy George said, that's the Toto Tower, not the Tokyo Tower. Actually, Tohto, as in Japanese original. Maybe due to trademark issues, some "Tokyo"'s in the series was changed to "Tohto" (Which meant "Eastern Capital" anyway.). Besides Tokyo tower, the Tokyo University and some of the railways was received such treatment.

I'm enjoying this series so far. Breath of fresh air from the evil demons/giant robots/wtf storylines of Adult Swim as of late.

because Kids WB is surrounded by a 50 foot thick electric golden wall that only lets 1 anime in every once in a while, and even THEN it might get canned immediately (Astro Boy).MegaMan.exe is still airing on WB (Notice I used the orginial name rather then NT Warrior. ;))

Why would anyone give a kid a drink in the first place?

There isn't one yet. The DVD'll be out in August or something IIRC. If Kyle feels like collecting a 300 episode series, and doesn't feel like waiting for a possible future boxset, then earliest we'll see an edit list based on the US Commercial version of the show is August. Kyle doesn't trust fansubs for the purpose of edit listing.

Hence why it wasn't destroyed at the end of the episode.

You mean, at the bottom of the scene? That's the way it is in the original. :)
But I don't believe it was on the previous 3 hints. And this is the first preview where we're told what's going on instead of having characters say their lines.

My VCR went dumb on me and didn't record last night's ep:( Can anybody give me a detailed summary of what happened exactly?
Conan (In a nifty backwards cap) & the gang take a trip to museum, and come across a slip of paper with pictures on it (I'm sure Sampo has a screen grab of the actual treasure map) that we eventually find out leads to gold. Conan doesn't really want to go find out what it means, but is dragged along by the others. At first they thought the map led them to the Aquarium down Moon View Street, but that turned out wrong when they didn't find a star-shaped sign. They figure out that it really is a map, using the Tohto Tower as a base, and that you can only find the way at night by following the neon signs. Eventually Conan & the gang find four giant bags of gold suspened on the roof of the one building, but are captured by the three Italian thugs who stole it in the first place. They are tied up, but manage to drop the gold onto the thugs, knocking them out long enough for them to go to the police. At the end of the episode, Racheal congratulates the gang, and Amy gives Conan a kiss, which sends Conan into a frenzy as he now has another girlfriend, and Mitch & George are jealous.

Something I just noticed - correct me if I'm wrong, but have they ever shown the 'Parental Advisory Warning' before this show before? I'm pretty sure they haven't, unless I've just missed it by several seconds every day. n_n; Anyway, I'm not trying to imply anything, but I was just wondering if this is an error on the part of WS, or if the warning is only aired at the beginning of the block now? I should be more observant. ;)

Anyway, I'm pretty much past the point of caring whether or not this show is 'adult' - I love it anyway. I've apparently fallen into the same pattern as some other folks, 'craving' the show once it's over. ;) Perhaps Conan isn't my absolute favorite anime, but it's pretty high on my list, from what I've seen so far. And Jimmy/Conan is so friggin' cute, how could I resist? :> And yes, for clarification, I'm female. o_-

For anyone who's interested and hasn't heard, they finally revealed who plays what character at adultswim.com. They are:

Alison Retzloff- Conan Edagawa
Jerry Jewell- Jimmy Kudo
Monica Rial- Amy
Dameon Clarke- George
Cynthia Cranz- Mitch
Colleen Clinkenbeard- Rachel Moore
R. Bruce Elliot- Richard Moore
Mark Stoddard- Inspector Maguire
Bill Flynn- Dr. Agasa

As for the first week of episodes, I am impressed with what FUNImation decided to keep, and I can't wait until they start releasing the DVD's this fall so I can watch it consistently. I honestly think that it has improved from the first few days, and that improvement will probably give them higher ratings than the Inuyasha reruns did.

I'm impressed with Dameon Clarke and Cranz, usually I can tell the old school Funimation people right off the bat. They've been able to modify their voices well. I didn't think that George was Clarke either, he's doing a good Sabat as Kuwabara voice, heheh.

Good series, the episodes are unpredictable, due to all the clues scattered and all the guessing, which is quite nice actually. I didn't get to talk about each episode individually, kinda busy this week, hopefully next week. So I'll just give my ratings:

The Big Shrink: B+
The Kidnapped Debutante: A-
Beware of Idols: A
Fish Marks the Spot: B+

The Idol eps. was clever, I didn't see that one coming, even though I'm familiar with ice bullets from 3 days of the Condor & CSI and self stabing from Murder She Wrote, and should've have seen it. The voice-changer came in handy and Rachel isn't as worried as before.

The map eps. was fun and funny, I'm going to have to pay more attention to the clues they give at the end of the eps. Also Amy's kiss leaves Conan in a bit of a bind:D .

Mon. brings the return of the thugs in black, plus a train, a bomb, and a Jimmy/Rachel moment.
Should be interesting.

But they're Canadian. Isn't the exchange rate $1 American = $600 Canadian?
Gold bullion coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf have a precious metal value far above their face value, so nobody'd be nuts enough to spend them or exchange them at their face value. With this type of coin, exchange rates are irrelevant; their market value as a piece of gold is what counts.

Meanwhile, this first CC thread's gone to 17 pages, 324 posts and over 10,500 views? CC could be the biggest thing around here since FLCL, and it's a whole, whole lot longer. I sense another Inuyasha in the making in terms of fan involvement. (^_*).

"Beware of Idols" was another great episode. Richard Moore's crush on Yoko was great, as was him getting all dressed up when she came to him. The murder case was some mystery alright. Mr. Fuji committing suicide because he thought Yoko hated him. Ingenius how he pulled it off; using a knife frozen in ice and turning up the heat to melt it after he jumped on it. I'd speculate that he wanted some of Yoko's hair as a piece of her to take with him. Or maybe he really did want to make it look like she killed him. I doubt it though since he still loved her.

...I really, really hope this series doesn't die because of the ratings. Because this show rocks! It's a fun detective story with the franchise as long as Dragonball was. And it's still continuing, with no end in sight. The characters were fun, even though they were a bit annoying. The cases were smart. And it has the whole energetic feel to it.

I really, really hope this series doesn't die. Not after 26 episodes had aired. This is a series that deserves a good chance to entertain.

Sadly, it's the age-old animation that could turn people off. That or the bunch of Inuyasha fans wanting to choke the series to death before it gets a chance.

So to end the first week of Case Closed airing on AS we are treated to the first "Junior Detective League" episode, and it was entertaining.

We see the focus turn to the other supporting characters in Conan's life, the kids: Mitch, George and Amy. They went to the museum, where they saw a lot of cool things, a lot relating to gold and treasure maps.. And just their luck they happen upon a piece of paper with symbols and the word 'ORO' written on it. And yeah, I was thinking Kenshin too. :anime:

Now i have to say I remembered the clue being a neon sign, but I totally forgot about the neon part when the JDL were running down moon street after those signs, it wasn't tell they got to the Aquarium and Conan started realizing things.. That the moon at the top of the paper, meant the things could only be seen at night, thus the neon part comes in handy with the signs. It was great seeing them figure it out, but of course the chase was pretty good, including that stop in the clothing store..:p I'm a little surprised that Conan didn't think more of it when he saw those guys the first time.

Then the whole fish thing at the end, using the bridge and that light as the eye was just crazy. It was cool that they found the coins.. but I have to admit, when i watched the episode the first time, I swear the reporter said "Make-believe coins" .. and I was like WTF??!! why the big fuss over fakes? It wasn't until watching the episode a 2nd time (which I recommend doing to anyone) that I noticed the Maple leaf on the coin when it fell. It was nice to see Conan instill confidence in the youngsters as they foiled the trio of crooks. And then the cute scene at the end where Amy kisses her hero Conan (CHU!!!) :) and Rachel teases him a bit.. Now isn't that an awkward scene for poor Conan.

Nice entertaining, fun episode. Gave us a little break from Conan's inability to work well being young and the little cutesy fun at the end.

Next episode's clue: Cellphone

I give "Fish Marks the Spot" an A.

Nice pic with Kenshin and Conan Sampo. Good stuff.

Sadly, it's the age-old animation that could turn people off.

I think we're all exaggerating. The animation doesn't look all that dated to me. It's not brimming with digital effects, but other than that it's pretty close to anything else that would be on the air. At least as good as Pokémon. I don't think the average viewer will see this show and instantly think it looks really old. It was obvious in Lupin III, but not here.

There isn't one yet. The DVD'll be out in August or something IIRC.

Though there wasn't really anything to edit in that tame episode. Albeit that was based on an old fansub, but it's from the Newtype group - fans who are old enough to remember VHS fansubs know that they were one of the better groups then.

It's been running in Japan for, I think, 8 or 9 years, so it's not that old.

BTW, here are some more Baranyi quotes (http://groups.google.com/groups?as_q=&num=20&as_scoring=d&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_ugroup=rec.arts.anime.misc&as_usubject=&as_uauthors=baranyi&as_umsgid=&lr=&as_drrb=q&as_qdr=&as_mind=12&as_minm=5&as_miny=1981&as_maxd=29&as_maxm=5&as_maxy=2004&safe=images): (again Shin'ichi=Conan, Ran=Rachel, Mouri=Moore)

No one can get that close to [the 2 dudes in black] without stopping too many
bullets. They also like to use bombs and other longer distance techniques.
Unlike many anime villains, they don't make mistakes very often.

Most of the murders in MC are "crimes of passion", and are usually revenge
crimes. In many cases the murder victim is much more evil than the killer.
In a few cases the culprit gets away with the crime because Conan or Mouri
feel that the victim deserved it.

>
> Oooh, that reminds me! Is there anything left between Shin'ichi and Ran?
> (go ahead, call me part of the "gradeschool girl demographic"; I wanna know!)
>

Oh yes - Ran still pines after Shin'ichi, and some of the more interesting
subplots come about when older, eligible guys hit on Ran. (Conan goes nuts
trying to interfere.) Shin'ichi also calls Ran frequently, always with the
excuse that he is off on some secret case. But again, as is traditional in
shounen series, Shin'ichi is too macho(immature) to admit to Ran that he
actually loves her.

What is most interesting to me is that the writers (TV and Manga) have
avoided the opportunity to do something between [Spoiler C] and
Shin'ichi/Conan. Although [Spoiler C] is older than Shin'ichi in their adult
ages, they are both very sharp and have more in common than either would
like to think too - particularly in their relative cold-bloodedness.

BTW, I think the girl idol was played by Laura Bailey, as she seemed to have the trademark "hesitation voice" (not quite stuttering). :)

By this point I don't even care if it's an "adult" show; all I know is I like it and I want to see more. Strange, I didn't think I'd like Detective Conan that much, but it's really fun. Whether it remains on AS depends on whether anyone else sees this.

Well, that's all I have to say really (I guess that's what happens when you show up to the C&C late; everyone's already said everything!) Nice screencaps as always, Sampo (especially that one with Kenshin:D ) and that's an awsome IY/DC pic you posted, Luigi!

I think the show is charmingly cute, but I have to wonder how Funmation thought they could ever sell this show to a childrens network with today's prudish parents. One of the big taboos the show breaks is that the children are never to be the victims of or threatened with graphic violence perpetrated by adults.

So far I've seen.

1. A child the victim of a kidnapping. (Geeze, in real life crime chances are the kid is raped and killed)
2. Conan getting struck in the head by an adult
3. Conan and a dog getting beaten by a baseball bat.
4. A gun getting pointed at the head of little conan.
5. Children tied up pondering their brutal murders with cute little drawings, of their bodies riddled with bullet holes, encased in concrete, or getting burned alive. It was so outlandish I really had to laugh at it.

If funmation tried to edit all that stuff out, the show wouldn't make much sense. The show kind of hovers around the Y-7 level. If the american standards weren't so strict, I could see it as a big hit on toonami.

The big thing that kind of bothers me about the show is the way the ears are drawn and the character design of George. Doesn't he remind you of Helga from the Oblongs?

The loss of OP doesn't seem to be a big deal, part of the opening guitar riff is still there. The Engrishy translation of the OP and ED doesn't do the show much good.

Although I hated the first episode, so far I would give the series a solid B.

I think the show is charmingly cute, but I have to wonder how Funmation thought they could ever sell this show to a childrens network with today's prudish parents. One of the big taboos the show breaks is that the children are never to be the victims of or threatened with graphic violence perpetrated by adults.

That's why a few years ago when Fox Kids considered it, then dropped it when it got stuck at BS&P hell. :)

After seeing the first week of Case Closed (corresponding to the January, 1996 episodes of Detective Conan--the month that these episodes originally aired in Japan) on TV, I am going to keep watching. (I.e. taping the episodes on my VCR and watching them when I get up in the morning, as I do need my sleep at night.)

This series is great so far, and should remain on Cartoon Network (or at least remain on TV), even after the first 52 episodes have finished running. I believe that I am going to like this series.

On to episodes 5 through 8 (i.e. the February, 1996 episodes of Detective Conan.)

Hmm with a week of episode on CN = a month of eps in Japan, Case Closed will get caught up to Detective Conan in 34 weeks, if things went straight through, which is about 2.5 months. Since it won't be straight through, I say it will take 3-4 years until we catch up to the Japanese (if more eps are coming).

Just some random trivia for you.

That is incorrect. If 4 new episodes a week are shown for 34 weeks, that would only mean that the first 136 or so episodes (actually, in the Japanese version, it would be less than 136 episodes) of Detective Conan would have been shown. Keep in mind that what Funimation calls episodes 11 and 12 (the first 2 parter of the English language version) were originally shown in Japan on Yomuiri TV (a Japanese "terrestrial" over the air station (as opposed to cable/satellite station)) as the same episode-- the episode was an hour-long special. Japan just aired Episode 361 of Detective Conan over the last week, and new episodes still show every week. (Source for that last sentence: Dave Baranyi) The unofficial English internet fan guides only show the titles and descriptions about the first 204 or so episodes, from what I've read, and not every fan who has made these guides has seen all of them. The Detective Conan franchise also has at least 7 movies.

Ironically, though, from the anime timeline, Detective Conan is like some American animation that people would know in the sense that the characters themselves do not age dramatically throughout the series, even after all of those seasons.

As for the end of the first week on Adult Swim, it looks like Detective Conan and the characters have gotten into some interesting adventures, and I can't wait for the time bomb on the express train case coming up on Monday night.

It seems to me that Detective Conan is very capable of capturing enough of a niche audience on Adult Swim to sustain itself for quite some time. Hopefully the show can maintain popularity long enough to see a TV-PG Toonami on weeknights appear, which it can migrate to that leaving more space for something new on Adult Swim weeknights.

It really could work out quite well.

If AS were somehow able to obtain the whole Case Closed series in dub, it'd take them a year and 9 months to run them all at the rate of 4X per week, without a single repeat.

I hope AS gives Case Closed a really long premiere run. This show's replay value depends on there being a very long time since viewers last saw an episode. Repeats have gotta be far enough apart for the viewers to have forgotten the details about each crime. Supposedly, Funi has 104 episodes already dubbed. If that's true and this premiere run's ratings prove good, the smart thing would be to grab the next 52 in time to tag them onto the current batch, and then repeat the first 104 while they wait for the next batch to be dubbed. I'm slightly confused...the long commercial shows several Jimmy Kudo scenes not in the first episode.

But when DC/CC is compared to the rest of AS anime shows currently airing, it'll just feel old to them. That's what I'm worried about. The "not-as-smooth-as-the-modern" animation that could get casual viewers to say "bleh". I mean, I know it gets to be as good as the recent anime shows after hundreds of episodes later, but this series might not get that chance to continue airing after 26 episodes.

More about the, how to say this, the man who fell off his chair.

I suppose the length of the knife handle and that the blade didn't go all the way in could have given him leverage to turn over. but I have more nit-picks.
The blood stain, since the knife didn't go all the way through, the last place there should have been blood is underneath his torso as it ran to the sides or down his neck. Also I would have expected some splatter around the area of the dent in the floor.

The ice, from the flashback or reenactment or whatever you call it, the ice was a rather large block. This would have caught the splatter I was talking about, but it brings up some difficulties.
If he brought it with him or made it there, such a large block would take a real long time to melt, even if the thermostat was turned up.Also if he brought it with him, he would have had to either bring in a knife that didn't belong to Yoko or stolen it the day before, risking Yoko noticing it was missing and telling someone.

My experiments have shown that a much smaller block would suffice and could be made on site in a reasonable time by filling a coffee mug with ice cubes and a few inches of water. Run the mug under water for a second until the block can be pulled out, then dry the mug and put it away. This should be just enough ice to hold the knife in position and has the benefit of melting much quicker, time being a factor because he wouldn't want to be found with ice on the knife handle.
With my freezer at normal settings, it took about an hour for the ice to freeze and two hours for it to completely melt in a microwave kept warm using a mug of hot water next to but not touching the ice. So I'm thinking the smart thing to do is sneak in soon after she left in the morning.

The coffee mug with it's flat bottom produced ice that worked extremely well. It held the knife straight up and steady. When I dropped a box filled with meat onto it, there was significant and clean penetration. And just as in the cartoon, the ice shattered.

I should note that this experiment could be better carried out by using a popsicle stick instead of a knife. And instead of water, fruit juice can be substituted. And instead of dropping a box of meat on it, you could just eat the frozen fruit ice while watching Case Closed.

Also of note from that episode, the singing was only just a bit better then you would have expected from someone named Yoko.

note some events in this post may be hypothetical.

Congrats, this is now my favorite post in the thread. ;)

Really, though - I'm sure this could be done for a lot of the CC episodes, since the method of killing is usually far more complex then it might even sound when Conan explains it. I guess if the visual evidence was perfectly accurate though, we'd have a case better suited for CSI instead.

What is this truth of which you speak? The truth that can only be had by reading the good book on the harmful side effects of smoking?

i hope this doesnt appear every ep.

Glad people enjoyed it.
It must have been good to get Sanwich to post.:)

Funny thing is, since I stopped watching NYPD Blue over about two years ago, I haven't been watching any crime drama like CSI. Yet this fascinates me.

Since people keep bumping this, I'll just close it.

All discussion for DC/CC goes in the regular C&C thread. Or you can start a thread if you want.
