View Full Version : Is anyone upset about Superman's voice in JL...

Is anyone upset that the voice that did Superman in STAS isn't coming back to do his voice in Justice League? Also, the guy that IS doing Superman's voice in JL, does he have a good Superman voice, and does it match the STAS Superman voice? I'm really glad Conroy stayed, and is dedicated to doing Batman's voice.

Well, Tim Daley DID have a good excuse... he was wrapped up in doing The Fugitive TV series. I'm sure he wanted to do it again, but didn't have the time.

Tim Daly's voice was the bomb...he just had Superman's voice...but the guy who talked for him on Batman Beyond sounded like the guy who talked for Jor-El...is that guy who talked for him on Batman Beyond Robert Newbern or whatever his name is?

The voice of Superman in "The Call" was done by the same actor who did the voice of Jor-El (I forget his name) because a) Tim Daily was busy with The Fugitive and b) they wanted to give Superman an older, more mature voice.
Speed forward to JL, when they started casting and recording voices Daily was still busy with The Fugitive and thus unable to work on JL.
Am I upset that Daily won't be VAing Supes in JL? Yes, well partially as I understand there are some things that just can't be helped. Sad thing is since The Fugitive has been canceled Daily's now available. But the way I see it is that we should at least give Newborn a chance. Who knows you may grow to like him more than Daily.
Let me put this another way. Sure Daily is now available but would you really be willing to be the one who gets to walk up to Newborn and say: "Well gee George you've been doing a swell job and all but we've got somebody some people would rather have voicing Superman. And, well, we just like him better so here's your pinkslip. But anyway thanks for all the hard work you've given us. See you around. And who knows, if we need some bit work done we'll give you a call."

As hard as that would be to hear, it all depends on your perspective: Is this particular incarnation of Superman more important to you than you job? I'm not saying the guy doing Superman on JL should go (I haven't heard him yet), but that is basically what everything in this buisness comes down to. If Dini and Timm didn't carefully choose who were to do the voices of the characters for Batman, as in, if they went with the first guy they saw because they didn't want to have to tell him "sorry, your not the one", then Leonardo Di Caprio (the only weird example I could think of) might have been Bats instead of Conroy (God forbid!!!). If that was the case, everybody would just marry the first person that had a crush on them because no one would be able to say, "Listen, I like you alot and we've both grown alot together, but you're not "The One" for me". Sure, it would be hard to hear it and hard to say it, but in the end, it would be for the best. It would be honest .

I've heard the new Superman voice, and I didn't like it very much. Maybe if I'd never seen S:TAS, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but the new Superman voice just isn't tough enough. Tim Daly made Superman sound like a strong and confident hero, while the new guy is a bit on the wimpy side (in my opinion). I would do everything humanly possible to bring Tim Daly back.

Just for the record... the guy who did Superman in BB and Jor-El in STAS is Christopher McDonald. He's also been in Dirty Work, Happy Gilmore, the Leave It To Beaver movie, and did one of the voices in The Iron Giant.

I hate it when voices change. Some turn out for the better, but very few. I can't imagine Batman being voiced by anyone other than Kevin Conroy. Let us thank Mr. Conroy for being dedicated to the Batman part. Tim Daly played Superman really well. Kinda heroic but also down to earth. He didn't exaggerate the Super in Superman like Danny Dark and Bud Collyer did in the old Superman and Superfriends cartoons. A shinning example of a bad Superman voice would be that of the one used in the Multipath Superman Adventures. Corny.

yeah it sucks tim daily isnt back. BUT, i look at it like this. i dont think i could even watch the show if kevin conroy wasnt batman, thatd just be too weird. but with superman, i dont know, daily was great, but i could live with the change, you know what i mean? im just thankful conroy likes doing the bat and that he wasnt changed. peace.

I'm waiting before judging. So far, I haven't heard good things about the new Superman voice, though. Yeah, Daly ruled. Not only did he do an amazing job as Superman (he was just as much Superman as Conroy was Batman IMO), but he did an awesome Bizarro. But I'll wait and see what Newborn does with him.
I still think they shoulda got Christopher McDonald. He was prettyb cool in "The Call."

I'm completely with Mr. Obsession on this, although the one there's a reason for me to add more to weigh my original opinion on.
Personally I think we're just kidding ourselves when we say we wanted a "deeper voiced" Superman or whatever. It's just a bit of rationalization to deal with the fact Mr. Daily was unavailable at the time. If I recall, we said the same thing about that replacement voice over artist for Commissioner Barbara Gordon when we saw Season three of Batman Beyond and ROTJ. Meanwhile the replacement, although with a rough voice as requested by our crew, STILL sounded like a 20 year old.
The only reason I bring all this up is because Superman's new voice is the only complaint I've read about in those official type reviews of JL. They said something along the lines of Clark sounding too young.
Of course, the fact remains, there's nothing much we can do about it now. And heck, this guy's an ACTOR after all. I'm sure he'll fit into the part eventually.

for the record, his last name is Daly, not Daily.

What about the DBZ voice changes, most people got used to them over a while.

Yeah, but this is DCU animated stuff! :D
The only voice change I can think of that happened in the same show was Alfred in BTAS. As I recall, they had one voice actor for the first three episodes, and someone else (don't know his name, but a huge improvement) took over after that.
And I know they had someone else as Batgirl in TNBA, but that's the only one I remember.
Did I miss any?

IMO, I thought the voice of Batgirl in TNBA was better than any of the others.
I'm disappointed that Tim Daly isn't doing Superman's voice, but I'll have to wait to hear the JL voice actor before I can really compare them.

Don't forget that Croc and Babydoll got new voices in TNBA too.

Scarecrow's voice was different as well...the guy who played Weyoun on Star Trek Deep Space Nine talked for him during the seasons on the WB. He was ausome, he made Scarecrow sound really scary, whereas the other guy that talked for him during the earlier seasons of Batman on Fox kind of made him sound corny.

Hey, I got a question. Is the regular voice-casting person (I think her name's Andrea Romero) doing the casting for JL? I know everyone sorta has a hand in it, but I'm guessing she was mainly in charge in the area before. They've done such an awesome job in the past, I wanted to know if she's returning.

I think I might have heard somewhere that Andrea Romano might be casting, but I'm not sure...I can't really remember where and when I heard it and if it was even true...I heard that Shirley Walker was supposedly not composing the music in the show, at least not in the pilot.

Yes, Andrea Romano is the voice director on JL, according to the credits included in the press kit.

I loved both The Scarecrow's new appearance AND voice in TNBA, and I though it sucked that he only had 1 1/2 appearances in the series. Jeffrey Combs did a great job with him. I still remember him as the insane FBI agen from The Frighteners.

"Fake" Alfred was Clive Revill (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Revill,+Clive). Real Alfred was Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Zimbalist+Jr.,+Efrem)
