Gargoyles (1972 (http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Years/1972)) (TV):

After receiving word about a mysterious carcass/skeleton unearthed in the Arizona desert, a father and his daughter decide to remove it from the burial grounds for further study. Once they do so, they, as well as the town, are besieged by a colony of gargoyles living in some nearby caverns. This film is actually fairly good by 70's standards. Stan Winston did the make-up, and the Gargoyles have characterizations. This film also has a Star Trek connection -- Bernie Casey, who appeared on DS9, plays the leader of the gargoyles. Believe it or not, this tele-film was intended as a series pilot. This movie is available on VHS and DVD.

Curse of the Talisman (2001 (http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Years/2001)) (TV):

The Internet Movie Database doesn't have a summary of this one, but I saw it on SCI FI. It's a truly schlocky horror flick in which the gargoyles have minimal characterization, and are just there to destroy things.

I recommend that fans of Disney's Gargoyles track down both films, and watch them, because it'll give you a good sense of what's been done in live-action to date and inspire you to keep pushing for Disney to do a live-action Gargoyles film at some point. As much as I enjoy the 1972 film for its earnestness and camp value, it and Curse of the Talisman shouldn't be the last words on gargoyles in live-action.

Different Gargoyles. A Gargoyle is a mystical creature, Not every single gargoyle out there is the ones in the show, geez.

I guess what he's trying to say is that these films are an example of what could be should Disney make a live action of their Gargoyles. I think . .

Right?

I just wanted to let everyone know that there were live-action gargoyles films out there, so that the'd have a basis for comparison. I think Disney could obviously improve on both films with the existing characters, but if another studio does something with different gargoyles in their own universe before Disney, that's fine, too. I personally don't care, as long as we get more gargoyle-centered stuff from somewhere. They're my favorite fictional creatures, and they're way underused.

I had forgotten about Curse of the Talisman. It was a decent effort.

I actually caught the '72 Gargoyles film on TV after I was an established fan of the Disney show. Didn't impress me.

Interesting.

I saw the 1972 Gargoyles telefilm while on vacation at my sister's condo in Orlando. My sister equated the characterizations of the gargoyles in that film to Demona and her hatred towards the humans. As for me, they just scared the bejeebers out of me (considering they're cheesy rubber suits from the 70's).
