Yeah, I saw that this morning. Funny stuff. I bet there's more than a little truth to this satire- I can't help but think that the moderately attractive women I see at anime and comic conventions probably have vastly over-inflated self-esteem.

I've already noticed this years ago, though most of the chicks I was paying attention to were the hot chicks that were dating some comic book artist or someone and came dressed up in a Wonder Woman outfit or something. Also, I've noticed this in my school (An accredited school for computer animation). Some of the women aren't all that, and I mean really really are not, but somehow they pick up guys. Some of them are really kinda bent mentally.

Only in The Onion can you hear about Farscape conventions.

LOL. I've seen girls lose their heads in chats or forums that are mostly populated by gamer geeks or comic fanboys before. When they start posting pictures of themselves in wet t-shirts or exposing themselves, then it starts to get annoying. :P

speaking as a sci-fi geek and a 'Scaper myself, the sheer fact these women take an interest in something most people would consider something only kids and losers would enjoy is comfort enough for most guys, especially those whom other women ignore and common interests make great conversation points
also for what it's worth there's a woman who comes to the Sci-fi conventions I frequent dressed as Aeryn Sun and the resemblance between her and Claudia Black is frightening

Personally, I like a fair amount of geeky things, myself (Mostly sci-fi, animation and comics, not much of a gamer gal), and I like to think that I get a moderate amount of male attention from certain geekish communities, but I'm smart enough not to let it go to my head and whore myself out for it. :D

Hmmm... wearing a costume at a Farscape convention. Sounds like low self-esteem to me.
Anyway, funny article.

It's funny 'cause it's true.
Although it seems to me that more and more women are getting into what have traditionally been "geeky guy" passtimes. Both my ex- and current girlfriends are into anime, Star Trek, and video games, and my current girlfriend's roommate is even more into that stuff than she is, so they can't be THAT rare.
Or maybe I'm just lucky.

Howdy,

Maybe. I know one thing that really cemented the whole thing between me and the missus is that she's willing to read comics, watch strange (and not so strange) animation, and play video games, if not to the same degree that I am. It may also be an acquired survival skill, since a lot of geeky stuff, like video game consoles and comic book superhero movies, are now essentially mainstream.
The wife thought Crichton was hunky and I thought Aeryn was hot and we both thought Pilot & Moya were unspeakably cool, so Farscape had something for everybody but the family dog :).
The best bit about this article is that it's funny if all you know about sci-fi is that there are people who take it a bit too seriously. It gets funnier when you notice all the Farscape details that they got right (like Paul Goddard being in Farscape and The Matrix, and the "Zhaan dropping her dress" episode).

I liked that article, but the cover story about the cockfighting in Congress was better.
The Onion likes to poke fun at culture like that a lot. In fact, my favorite Onion columnist, Larry Groznic (well he's not an official one but he shows up every now and then) talks about this. I especially like his column on how he can't attend a friend's wedding because it's on during a "Prisoner" marathon. :D
