This is one hell of a movie (couldn't resist)! This may quite arguably be an Oscar contender, but wil likely be overlooked becuase of the extreme dark nature of the entire movie. The movie is based on a conpsiracy theory on who Ripper was, and they make it play out. I went int he movie with a preconceived knowledge who the killer was thoughtr to be, but the movie still played out great with an ending any Freddie Prinze Jr. Movie fan won't like.

First off - the visuals. These are the most impressive visials I've seen in years. You can almost feel the griminess of the streets and the sense of claustrophobia from the dark narrow alleys and streets. This movie is a visual feast, and the visuals MAKE the movie. Bar none.

The acting is first rate, as always. Great acting by Depp and Grahma really maske the picture work. Granted, prostitutes probably weren't as clean as Graham, but she does a convincing job with her role. The back story of her character definatly adds to the role, and is one that even applies today as well.

The movie is a great 2 hour feast for the eyes. Even the ugliest whores and decapitated corpses are an accomplishment by the The Hughes Brothes, who work their distinctive style successfully into this grim graphic novel movie. There are some shots that will just amaze you. Heck, there are a couple shots I can't figure how they pulled off!

This movie is recommended, recommended, recommended! This is a movie not to miss! Even if you don't believe the theories behind the Ripper's rumored identity, this is still a magnificent movie.

A+

And how about the sound effects. If anything in that movie should get a Oscar nomination, it's gotta be the sound effects. Every clang of a knife or somebody being killed or cut up. How about the lobodomy scene with the women? Pretty gross sounding there. :)

The movie was great I have to agree. One thing that did stick out, and I'm not a nitpicker, but didn't Mary Kelly look just a little too pretty for an "unfortunate."? That's Hollywood for you. A great movie all around. Johnny Depp looked a lot like his Icabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow.

I finally got to see this yesterday, and it was worth the wait! I do wish they had used more from the graphic novel and had gone with the plot pacing they used in there (we knew right off who the identity of "Jack" was). I don't recall seeing the news paper reporters coming up with the name "Jack the Ripper" to sell news papers, an aspect that was sorely missed, nor did we see much of the Queen and the Elephant Man, two people which Alan Moore used in greater detail in his book. But leaving them out for the most part except for the scenes they were used in helped keep the killer a secret until the end, but that stuck me more as a Hollywood ploy than something Alan Moore would have wanted done with his story.

But what they did use from the graphic novel was really well done, and in some places, almost word for word. On it's own, it's a great movie, but if you haven't read Alan Moore's great graphic novel, I cannot recommend it enough. The last murder in the movie is a chapter all in of itself in the book, to give you an idea of how detailed it gets.

And you realize this is the second thing Heather Graham has been in where she was in love with an inspector who solved his crimes thru supernatural means?

The movie was very good, and for what they included it it, they pulled if off with pinache. I like the fact they kept his ID a mystery. It gave a nice edge to it, something to string along the viewer throughout the peice. While it doesn't compare to the graphic novel, it is one great movie.
