View Full Version : bad (popeye) news
I really hate to post this but, I wanted you guys to know. Due to some last minute issues (which I am not at liberty to discuss) I'm Popeye! will not be airing this Sunday (the 28th). Folks are pretty excited about the show and seem to be confident that this matter will be worked out soon. I'll let you know when I know otherwise.

Why do they do these things to us?!
I hope this isn't like the pre-June Bugs deal where someone on the inside decided at the last moment that they had to be more politically correct - forcing some "editing". That would really be disgusting.

Hmm. Interesting how the date keeps changing around. There's something screwy going on around here. It sure woulda been nice if they'd realized that they had problems more than a few days before the premiere. Asides from this ticking people off, it's going to have a negative effect on publicity. All the people who saw the articles in the paper probably won't know about the delay.
Thanks for the news bozo. We appreciate even getting the bad news. :)

I just updated my Geocities site, after reading bozo's original post. I hoped it wasn't true, and went ahead, and added some files to my site, non cartoon related.
Now, I'm going to have to change the info on my site. ARRGH!!!
If CN was worried, they should have stuck to the November 11th date.

What is up with this network???? can't they make up their mind on when this show is going to premiere, I mean this is getting very annoying here. From what Jerry Beck said, that CN has no air date to when "I'm Popeye" will air

Even though I'm not much of a Popeye fan, even I was looking forward to this show, and this is disappointing to hear. I hope they put the show back on soon.

This is terrible news. I was really looking forward to the show. I even had some brand new blank tapes all ready to record the first show this Sunday. As Popeye might say, "I yam disgustipated!" :( :(

Guys...it's not CN's problem. King Features keeps finding some way the Popeye cartoons can't be shown in one way or another.
During the WB chat on the Home Theater Forum, they stated that King Features owns a lot of rights involved with the cartoons. It's real shame too...WB went out of their way to spend money on restoring and reconstructing the cartoons and King Features still keps an iron fist on them.
Of course...it may have been King Features that had them restored, but I find this unlikely. WB has had a lot of their library digitally restored by Lowry Digital Images recently.
King Features isn't going to make ANY money off these restored versions if they keep witholding the rights!

I guess it's time to yank my Popeye avatar - until CN gets things figured out!
Sheesh!

Is AOL Time Warner trying to get a copyright on the restored versions of the cartoons, similar ot what Turner did with the dubbed pre-48 WBs in 1995? If that's the case, the Hearst Corp.'s lawyers may have decided there was either something that violated KFS's copyright on the characters or the figured the new versions would cut into any potentialo future home video release deal.
It may be the delay is just for technical reasons, or because there is a delay in restoring some of the cartoons (The "I'm Popeye" title cartoon "Hello, How Am I?" may be a tough one to restore). However, I'm betting that somehow, lawyers are involved somewhere down the line...
