In this book, it initally starts off detailing conflicts between the girls, especially Irma and Cornelia. Will gets extremely emotional after seeing her mom dating her history teacher. Irma convinces Hay Lin to ditch class, and spy on their math teacher, Mrs. Rudolph. After initally seeing nothing unusual, seeing Mrs. Rudolph munch down a pineapple with fangs causes Irma to realize that her teacher is from Metamoor, and Mrs. Rudolph then changes into a monster. After that, the rest of the book really has a lot of action. Using their combined powers, the girls open the mysterious book left behind at Elyon's house, and Taranee is the only one that can hear it saying to beware the shadow of Phobos, prince of Metamoor. The book contains a pendant, the Seal of Phobos, that nearly engulfs the girls in darkness. Will uses the Heart to free herself and the others. The Heart of Candracar and the map from Yan Lin leads the girls into a portal leading to Metamoor, where they encounter Elyon, Lord Cedric and Vathek. They fight some henchmen, and Lord Cedric orders Frost the Hunter be brought in, and the girls hide and try to use an image trick to escape, but Frost grabs Taranee. Taranee orders Will to go home, and Will uses the Heart to make her and the others escape.

Three books into the series, and I'm starting to dislike Irma, especially after convincing Hay Lin to ditch school and spy with her like that. A lot of action in the second half of this book, defintely more than were present in the previous two. However, I think there may have been a little too much action in this book, since this book describes several big events occuring consecutively.

Interestingly enough, there is this one passage in the book that ironically, seems to describe the upcoming animated TV series perfectly:

"And then she was thinking about Saturday morning TV stuff- like cooperation and compassion and hard work. She was thinking that if the Guardians didn't work together, they were going to fail. The world would be doomed."

Heh. Nice little subtle hint there.

Anyway, back on topic, on we go with book 3, and--
the debut of the Map of the 12 Portals, Yan Lin's last gift to the guardians. The map becomes an important plot point from this point on. The Seal of Phobos is also introduced here, and that point continues into the next book.

Also--

Taranee gets captured, and if I'm not mistaken, this book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. It'll be interesting to see how they handle this when the cartoon starts in 2005.

Also, the end of this starts (albeit slightly) the recurring theme of

Cornelia bucking to be leader, what with her questioning Will at the end and being very demanding.

Pretty much shapes up the main reason I don't care for Cornelia.

I can say right now that Book 3 is more a process of the W.i.t.c.h. team trying to get used to what they have become. Frankly all of them at this point are still a bit scared because they've being literally thrust into a situation that is so different than their normal school lives at the Sheffield Institute.

Note that--

Cornelia still does NOT relish the dramatic change in her life, and becoming Guardians have literally made her rivalry with Irma that much more worse. I can almost tell that Irma thinks of becoming a Guardian as a good thing, just the thing to really get back at Cornelia. Note what happened when Cornelia and Irma combined their powers to create that roaring geyser at the construction site and Cornelia got totally soaking wet and even more mad.

By Book 3, Taranee is definitely very scared about the change to her life, and Will is almost as scared because of her literally being thrust into a leadership position. Note that Hay Lin has pretty much accepted her role despite the fact she lost her grandmother.

In short, their acceptance of the role as Guardians is not yet complete.

Yeah, Hay Lin seems to be the only one of the five who has actually accepted her destiny. The other four are still not that ready yet. We'll see what becomes of them in our next talkback for book 4.
