In this book, it initally starts off detailing conflicts between the girls, especially Irma and Cornelia. Will gets extremely emotional after seeing her mom dating her history teacher. Irma convinces Hay Lin to ditch class, and spy on their math teacher, Mrs. Rudolph. After initally seeing nothing unusual, seeing Mrs. Rudolph munch down a pineapple with fangs causes Irma to realize that her teacher is from Metamoor, and Mrs. Rudolph then changes into a monster. After that, the rest of the book really has a lot of action. Using their combined powers, the girls open the mysterious book left behind at Elyon's house, and Taranee is the only one that can hear it saying to beware the shadow of Phobos, prince of Metamoor. The book contains a pendant, the Seal of Phobos, that nearly engulfs the girls in darkness. Will uses the Heart to free herself and the others. The Heart of Candracar and the map from Yan Lin leads the girls into a portal leading to Metamoor, where they encounter Elyon, Lord Cedric and Vathek. They fight some henchmen, and Lord Cedric orders Frost the Hunter be brought in, and the girls hide and try to use an image trick to escape, but Frost grabs Taranee. Taranee orders Will to go home, and Will uses the Heart to make her and the others escape.
Three books into the series, and I'm starting to dislike Irma, especially after convincing Hay Lin to ditch school and spy with her like that. A lot of action in the second half of this book, defintely more than were present in the previous two. However, I think there may have been a little too much action in this book, since this book describes several big events occuring consecutively.
Interestingly enough, there is this one passage in the book that ironically, seems to describe the upcoming animated TV series perfectly:
"And then she was thinking about Saturday morning TV stuff- like cooperation and compassion and hard work. She was thinking that if the Guardians didn't work together, they were going to fail. The world would be doomed."
