Hay Lin's grandmother dies after passing on a map to Hay Lin that shows the 12 portals leading to Metamoor. At the funeral, Elyon appears but quickly disappears to fool the girls into thinking she is a ghost. Later on, Irma admits that she turned a boy she had a crush on, Andrew Hornby, into a toad after he tried to kiss her in his car. At school, the girls see Elyon and decide to follow her to her house. Her house is abadoned, and an invisible "ghost" leads them to a basement. The basement has a door that Cornelia is able to open. It leads to a tunnel that soon becomes a trap for the Guardians, and completely separates Hay Lin from the others through a wall. The floor becomes an abyss, and Will gains the courage to call the Heart of Candracar, and she, Irma, Taranee, and Cornelia transform. They fight their way against the trap, and free Hay Lin. Elyon tells them they are fighting a useless battle. Afterwards, the girls finally find a frog with long hair.

I thought this book did a good job portraying the girls as new and inexperienced at using their powers. It is very refreshing to see a story where the heroes have to discover things out for themselves, rather than being told how to do things. Elyon has a great mysterious villainess personality to her. You really wonder what her motives, and those of Lord Cedric's are and to read more, which of course, is what is supposed to happen. :)

By the way, I'd like to ask that each W.I.T.C.H. book thread stick with the specific book it is discussing, and not spoil events beyond that particular story.

Yeah, that's probably my bad. :o

I was honestly surprised how moving Yan Lin's death was, and I particularly liked Irma using her powers to pick up boys with her "prettier" form.

This is really shaping up to be an addictive, deep series; I'm just hoping they'll be kind to us some day and release the comics in digest format, not just monthly books (because I can't add books to my pull list).

One of the things that gets developed in the second book is the fact that Cornelia and Irma have a habit of constantly irritating each other. It's like something literally out of what you see in the animated version of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon where Usagi and Rei get into spats in no time flat.

Let's see how long before Cornelia and Irma literally stick their tongues out at each other.

The
"Irma turns boy into frog" thing
sounds kinda funny.

Obviously, they've moved on to the serious portion of the book, as evidenced by
the death of Hay Lin's grandmother

Also, Chapter 1 is hi-freaking-larious, as Will shows the girls
her power to make her appliances come to life. Irma freaks out, with comedic results here.

Actually--

The passing of Yan Lin was already implied in the first book. Note the very explicit mention from the Oracle that Yan Lin's mission has been completed.

But we really have to beg this this question: just what did Yan Lin do as a Guardian when she was the same age as Hay Lin is now?

I hope someone who has read all the original Italian-release W.i.t.c.h. issues (38 of them!) can answer the question I mentioned in the spoiler. :)

Also--

Note how Cornelia seems to take everything real seriously and skeptically, Irma constantly makes a lot of wisecrack remarks, Taranee is very scared of the whole experience, and Hay Lin is still the voice of reason and stability here. And you wonder why I think Cornelia and Irma will be sticking tongues out at each other sooner or later. :p  ;)

You know how you put those "[-]" brackets around the codes to get bold text and all? You do that by typing SPOILER in the brackets (it has to be in caps) and by putting a / before the second tag to close it.

The FAQ explains it better than I can:

I just got the seventh book today through Amazon, so it's probably out in bookstores by now. Probably just arrived this week.
