View Full Version : Surrounded by website thieves?

The comments by Jon about how the bcdb stole his material reminded me about a site I emailed last month after I discovered they had basically lifted the entire Foghorn Leghorn filmography from my website (well, they had reworded it in a few places, but it is a unmistakable duplication - even copying a few misspellings). Of course I haven't heard back and they haven't either removed the material or given me credit.
:(

And now today I see another Looney Tunes site with an exact copy of the filmography as that other site! One of those two sites stole from me, then it was taken from them! I guess I'll write the owner of this second site, not that expect anything to come of it.

Now I'm sure that lots of cartoon website owners and wannabee owners follow the TTTP. Can I appeal to them for a moment to exercise a little courtesy when "borrowing" the hard work of others? Is it really that big a deal to ask permission to use the material? At least give the original author credit and a weblink on your site!

There. I feel a little better now. ;)

I guess that I should consider it a compliment that the material seemed good enough to pilfer...

I always try to give credit for things on my page, the articles I write are my own, and the pictures I generally ask for. As a general policy, I try to give credits at the bottom of pages for images...I'll say "Thanks to....for the images." I know it takes effort to scan something, especially if it's specifically done for my needs, so I try to make sure I give credit for that. If it wasn't for a number of you guys, mainly Jon and Happyheathen, my site would be mighty boring.

I can well understand the frustration of webmasters regarding their own work and there is of course little they can do to protect it...But It has been my experience that those "thieves" hardly ever prosper on the net. (too lazy)
Anyway there are tons of sites out there that do give free content especially pictures, that there really is no need to "steal"
and most people will be more than happy to share it with you
for a link back or something it only makes sense .

And then of course there is the bandwidth thief...
the worst kind. Those that "hot link" to videos and pictures.
but those folks are a bit easier to stop cause little do they know
that website log entries will record their every moves.
having a lot of video content on my website it is a constant battle with those who just can't resist the temptation to just take.
soon I might just release a page full of IP addresses of bandwidth
rustlers
Anyway that's My 2 cents worth

of course, there is always the old trick of moving your content to a new address, updating your site, and then placing porn (stolen, of course) at the old addresses...
leaves the theives with a bit of a problem...
