by posting on my friend anthony's laptop, I'll be bringing fairly immediate coverage of the announcements for y'all.
so far, there hasn't been anything big, though the ABe/Ueda panel was giving awesome signed ABe posters to every person who asked a question, and I asked a question (was Texhnolyze intentionally planned to be so silent in tone, or did it develop that way? answer: Konaka wanted it that way, as did the director,) so I scored one of those. I also ran into Ferquin, who I introduced to Kyle Pope, and Ferquin got a picture of me and Kyle which might make it's way back to the net. I then hit Daichi's panel, where the attendees not only got previews of Jubei 2, but also a got sneak peek at his newest work that'll be released this June (it's super-cute and super-awesome.) Also, I got to handle the Jubei 2 dvd (fanboy glee) since the tech wasn't there to remove it. I asked Daichi about how he felt about Kodocha finally being licenced, and he said he was surprised, as he only heard about it the day before. The panel was great because he sat with the audience when previewing stuff, and the setting for the panel was fairly intimately set.
I then hit the dealer room, and I picked up a potter doujin (a clean, tasteful one of course, because of my personal taste, though the yaoi and shonen ai has sold out anyway,) a NieA_7 artbook (so pretty) and a NieA_7 art print (also pretty.)
I then hit the AMV contest, which can be summed up with one statement:
Escaflowne + Lion King = Comic Gold.
After that, I hit Denny's with a bunch of my friends, then browsed around the con until finding my friend Anthony, then browsed some more, then posted this.
Tomarrow is the big panel day (Geneon, Funi and ADV,) and I should have a lot of stuff post to the ticker for y'all hopefully (I might even phone in stuff right after panels if the news is big enough.) :)

D'oh I wish I wasn't stuck on this big rock wayyyy out in the Pacific. Then maybe I might get a chance to attend one of these cool Cons one day...
Thanks for taking the time to post Karl. :) Sounds like you are having a blast there!

Oh yeah, the Escaflowne video with Van as young Simba and Merle as Zazu.
For anyone interesed, here's (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?vid_id=32525) animemusicvideos.org listing of the video, which includes the main reason for this video existing (it involves last year's Otakon, three AMV creators who were competing in the Romance/Sentimental category, and a little bet).

WTF!?Spiral?Okay that's nice and all but come on....it's like they don't even care about shows that are guaranteed to make money.

There are plenty more cons in the next few months that they can announce shows at. They just announced Kodocha at the last con, I doubt they want to give away all their big acquisition news at once.

Yeah but a nice order would be:
Kodacha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Spiral, PoT, then One Piece
Sort of evened out but I can't really complain when you decide to bring logic into this.
William C. Maune

I have to admit that would be a nice order. However, considering no one was expecting Spiral, I wonder if they possibly have more than 5 acquisitions to announce this season.

There's a lot of conventions still going on this year. However, when it comes to announcements, the cons that have a greater chance to have an announcement are the following:
-Anime Central
-Fanime
-Project A-ko
-Anime Expo (the big "West Coast" convention)
-Otakon (the big "East Coast" convention)

So I'm on before Karl's had a chance to tonight, eh? I got back from SakuraCon a little while ago. Well, Will sorta already got the news about 4kids. Karl was actually taking notes, so I'll still leave the big newbreaking to him. Word has got out about Spiral already, too. (Not suprising... the ADV reps joked about getting text messages about their announcements hitting the web mid-panel.) When Karl told me that was the big news, it threw me for a loop. That was absolutely nowhere in my mind. I guess one of the Funi DBZ producers had become a big fan of the show or something, and so they worked to get it. I missed the panel myself (need to pre-reg to beat those lines), so that's sorta second-hand info. Or third-hand. In any case, make of it what you will.
Let's see... Geneon:
- Couldn't comment about many things. Said that yes they're showing up in some anime title credits as "minor investors," but wouldn't say that meant they were liscensing them necessarily. EDIT: It seems that now anime fans are becoming more techno savvy in their liscense guessing, info's leaking quicker than they can really say. Case in point, Karl brought up the Tsukihimedvd.com thing, and how they were releasing the soundtrack this summer... the guy seemed pretty nervous to say anything, other than to buy the CD when it comes out.
- Some cool packaging was shown off. The R.O.D. the TV box is cool, but still confuses me. It's designed to look like a leather-bound book, and the DVDs go into it... but will it be sold in slipcases that fit into the book, or will I have a bunch of empty cases when I put them into there? Probably should've asked. Like the fact that there's that extra space in for any other DVDs you might want to put in. Winkwink.
- Please buy Lupin. They plan to keep releasing it as long as they can (past Vol. 10), but "the power is in your wallet."
- Same goes for soundtracks - the more you show support, the more they can do. FLCL OST 2 will have the liner notes available online, since the translation of the drama portions would be too much for the CD's packaging. (In a perfect world, the dub cast could do it. But I know that's not likely, plus it's from a completely different company, etc. etc. Plus some people would complain.) Not that they really have plans to at this point, they wouldn't rule out further domestic releases of The Pillows.
- No hard feelings against CN for the whole Lupin thing.
- They have the eX-Driver movie. EDIT: Oh yea, Requiem from the Darkness, too. With crazy-go-nuts head smashing scenes. Horror series about an author who wants to write a horror story... in the past... who meets strange people. Or something. Their synopsis wasn't exactly clear... they actual said a better one will be available on their site sometime.
ADV:
- Showed off English version of the upcoming Grrl Power, which is actually coming out simultaneously with the Japanese release. Pretty funny.
- Parisite Dolls, which is set in the Bubblegum Crisis universe, and ADV co-produced (I think), is going to come out sometime. (Apologies for the lack of details)
- Anime Network is really moving ahead, with the first linear network and all. Apparently the need to develop a 24/7 network with anime programming is a big drive for them in the way they're liscensing and releasing anime. Won't completely stop pursuing getting thier shows on other networks, though.
- It sounded like they had some deals in the works with some larger cable companies regarding Anime Network, but of course couldn't name names. It sounds like it's really growing, and it's apparently the number one on-demand network. That may have been known somewhat, but it was news to me.
- Showed off their ADV Toys stuff that's coming up. A lot more "merchandise" stuff than toys... Pins, lunchboxes, window clings, stuff like that for Excel Saga, Noir, Kalieodostar and maybe some other one I can't remember. A good looking Menchi plush toy will be availble in multiple sizes.
- Wanted to say some stuff about Newtype, and soundtracks, but apparently both departments that handle those didn't give them notes to talk about.
-Probably no boxset for Evangelion Platinum. Also noted it won't have some things from Renewal (the movies), hence the different name. They felt it would be like false advertising. I'm pretty sure they said it would be redubbed... they're redoing the audio into 5.1 at least (to match the Japanese audio), which requires additional audio for stuff you couldn't hear before.
-About Mezzo TV, they wanted to make sure people who'd been following the Japanese release that they had the DVD versions. It's becoming common practice in order for anime studios to meet deadlines, they cut some corners here and there. But since it's so easy to go back and fix that in the way they digitally animate things nowadays, they make the quality higher for the DVDs and things like that.
I'm pretty tired, and have a hard time remembering things exactly, so if you hear otherwise from a news site, go with them. Just for example, I can't recall who got Princess Tutu. Pretty sure it was ADV (EDIT: It was). All in all it was fun. I got a Pretear Volume 4 DVD, which I really know nothing about. I might see if I can exchange it somewhere for, say, an Abenobashi DVD. I must admit I'm fairly jealous Karl has two signed posters by ABe now. I'll leave it at that for now.

Don't know about the booklets. I don't think it was mentioned specifically. They did mention translating a lot of stuff, although I think they were just talking about a lot of commentary and stuff. It's a possiblilty, I guess. They might not of even known, if that part was handled elsewhere. As far as video goes, I think it's safe to assume it's whatever was on the Renewal discs.

Here's my rundown from the ADV panel. I apologize in advance for the unorganized blurbs 'cause I scrawled them all on paper really quick and this'll be my only time online until I get back from the con. If some of this has already been mentioned, I apologize as I am copying my notes quickly.
Pretty Princess Yuushi (Puchi Puri Yuushi) and Parasite Dolls were announced.
Eva Platinum - exactly the same as "Renewal" box except no movies, hence why it's called "Platinum" because it might be false advertising. Has 5.1 audio, remastered video, animatics for seven episodes, will be put on seven disks, first volume out July.
Ani-Minis - 3" DVDs w/ one episode for approx. $7.99 - aimed at casual viewers, can be used for credit towards buying a full DVD/series.
Anime Network - currently in 6 million households, #1 on video on demand on digital cable, developing a full-fledged linear 24-hour channel but will still have video on demand
ADV Toys - Jonathan the Seal plushie 5" is $7.99, 10" is $14.99 and comes out in July; Excel Saga - pins, magnets, antenna toppers, chopsticks, lunchbox, t-shirts and wallscrolls, Menchi plush doll avail. in big or small (Matt Greenfield suggests putting it in a fridge); Noir - pins, window clings, playing cards, lipgloss, wall scrolls, lunchbox, t-shirts; Azumanga Daioh - plushie; all this starts becoming available this summer
ADV still pitching shows for broadcast to networks regardless of Anime Network; Anime Network will focus more on shows that won't usually make it on TV and old, classic anime
Possibility of ADV Toys coming out with models
They showed an English cut of Grrl Power
Eva Box - no solid plans yet, won't be released until all DVD volumes are out; 5.1 audio so clear that sounds that were so faint that you never heard on earlier releases are now hearable; no video overlays on signs, etc.
Mezzo Forte TV - studio went back and reanimated "bad" animation, ADV will distribute the newly-reanimated cut.
14 new dubbing studios built; quicker domestic release (as little as a couple mos.); they're surprised at how fast they're getting things localized.
Live action Eva - working on script, talking to directors; WETA may be busy with Narnia
Eva Plat. dub will be like Director's Cut DVDs, may have both versions of episodes like director's cut; Matt Greenfield - this new edition: completely replaces the currently-released boxed set
Back catalog - Because of legal-ese in original contracts (Japan considers VHS as a seperate media from DVDs, which are seen as software), they'd need to go back and rewrite contracts for older title rights
ADV music - still alive
Art books - considering making more
Considering dub-titles/closed captioning for hearing-impaired
Monica Rial's pet name for Crispin Freeman is "Crispy Critter"
That's all I got. Monday (or maybe later tonight depending on how fast I process the hundreds of digital photos I shot), I'll have some naughty pics of Karl doing the nasty. Seriously! Oh, and pics of Kyle "the edit list guy" Pope.

Hey, no problem. I'm looking forward to that release too. I'll probably think clearer after some sleep, but I'm slowly remembering more... which I've sorta thrown in my post.
Ah, Ferquin comes and adds some finer notes. WETA also was busy with some movie about a gorilla. ;) As for the artbooks, it may also be worth mentioning that they can't really add anything about how they went and got their information, as it would be considered changing the original work, which is a big legal no-no.

A few things to say about the items:
Menchi plushie: Ladies and gentlemen, we've found the perfect accessory for an Excel cosplayer. :D Anyway, it sounds like it's going to be interesting, although I'd like to know the size of the small and large plushies (in inches, of course) before figuring out which one I should try to get.
Pins: Following in the footsteps of Azumanga Daioh comes more pins by ADV. Depending on the pin designs, I'm very likely going to buy some of those.
Azumanga plushie: One question: Which character is the plushie supposed to be. Personally, I'm hoping it's Neko-Koneko, considering how that is a plushie itself in the TV series.

I wonder if this includes CN.
-Yes, because I specifically mentioned CN. And they are pitching every thing they figure won't be seriously damaged by a standards board. (Case in point: 6 or 7 different networks wanted Eva.... without the religion, so ADV passed.)
-Also, linear Anime Network might be edited at times. It also sounded like it would because there might be some over-air affiliates, but I'm not sure on that part.
-ADV now has Parasite Dolls. Perhaps Urban Vision's deal fell through.
-Funi's rep mentioned that they'd be doing multiple release versions for certain 4kids properties, he could say exactly which, but he implied that Tokyo Mew Mew wasn't included in the deal, and that it was a shonen show(s). Didn't say which one(s). This implies uncuts, but who knows exactly at the moment.
I talked to the rep a bit later in the dealer's room, and he said Funi has probably already repitched Fruits Basket to CN upon hearing their interest in more girls' properties. I told him that maybe they should look to Canada since shoujo has done on TV there previously. I also told them that Kodocha would be a great for Miguzi.
The rep also said at the panel that he checks ToonZone every night, so if you're reading this and I messed something up, PM or email me with the correct facts, ok? :)

My money is on that they've pitched everything in there catalog outside of the really contriversal titles, so I think if Nadesico had a home on CN, it would have had it already. Teen Toonami opens up some breathing room, but not necessarily enough to really let it through.

Crap, forgot about that. Again, if the Funi rep is reading this, look into dubbing stuff in Canada to get into the CanCon game.
And I can't remember if that's the case or not with the prog scan. However, you know when it comes for preorder, those kind of technical aspect details should be made available like they usually are.
I'll also note that platinum will get a fresh dub, with a fresh, more accurate translation. Same for the subs. Platinum will also replace the current Eva releases, IE: the old version of Eva is never to be produced again. Also, it's done over 7 disc because ADV is loading it with tons of extras. So much effort is being put into the release, they don't even have defined release schedule per se for the later discs, because they want to make sure it's done right it seems.

If ADV is, indeed, trying to collaborate with Manga on the movies (which one rep from Manga implied is a possibility), they very well may be able to.

1) Thanks for giving us hope that Shaman King and other 4kids series will finally get uncut releases
2) Keep up the good work, your dubs are getting better all the time
3) Put some shojo on Candian television, it's a good plan IMO and I don't even live in Canada
4) WHY THE HECK DID YOU GUYS MAKE THAT AWFUL GT RAP?!?!? What was wrong with Dan Dan? ... sigh
5) Prince of Tennis would be an excellent series (if/when you get it) to put on CN prime time and try anime outside of a block format. It could be a big success.
6) I know it's useless but... PLEASE license One Piece this year. I want to buy it on DVD while I'm still young...

While PoT would work outside of a block, I honestly have to say that it would probably work better on Miguzi than most shonen anime out there. Especially if they're trying to attract a large female audience. That show has bishounen coming out of every orafice. Or, in the case of the various doujinshi out there... well, I think you guys know where I'm going with that one.
Of course, it wouldn't work nearly as well as Fruits Basket would work on prime time YTV. :D

Karl...I've heard that some booths have had live-action La Blue Girl movies on sale at SakuraCon in the past. Not just one, but a whole bunch of them.....
the whole idea of a live-action La Blue Girl movie really scares me.....and apparently they're full of vaccuum tube tentacle lovin'.....
You should buy them and post them on teh intarweb! Send them to Aria!
....come on, it'll be fun.

The most outrageous booth was the one run by the guy who'd yell out every 5 seconds the following phrase unless occupied by a customer:
GET YOUR REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED HOOOOOOOOOOOOOT YAOOOOOOOOI!
comic gold, and his booth not had a bunch of h-doujin/games/dvds/posters of all stripes and orientations, but it also had a good selection of normal doujin. I bought a Gunslinger Girl and a Harry Potter doujin there. :)
