Sometimes on Ed Edd and Eddy you'll hear Edd asking about just "what the Sam Hill" is going on in a scene. What I was curious about it, did the people who write it just create it as an attempt to make a catachphrase, or are they just combining the names of voice actors Matt Hill and Samuel Vincent together to make a phrase?

If it's the second choice that's the answer, then I guess it's a little "easter egg" they threw in there, like the "aka" signs and references to Canada and Vancouver.

I'm sure it's just a catchphrase although the second sounds pretty funny

Actually, it's just a really old saying that works like 'WTF?' or 'What the hell?'. It isn't a reference, it's too old to be a reference.

Well, if were assuming that, then yeah. Foghorn Leghorn used it all the time (Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean... ;) )

Sam Hill (noun) Origin early 1800s: Hell "where the Sam Hill do you think you're going?"Yeah. It was used a lot back in the days of western colonization. Which is ironic because the Eds live in an urban environment.:D
