Is the anime Metropolis related to the Fritz Lang film or the book it is based on? I've only ever seen the Fritz Lang classic.

I may be off on a few details but I think it's based on Osamu Tezuka's adaptation of the Fritz Lang novel

It's supposedly based on Tezuka's manga which was inspired by the Fritz Lang film. However the movie doesn't really follow the manga.

Thanks; so it is vaguely connected to the original "Metropolis"; I thought it might be a completely different story alltogether.

Thea von Harbou wrote the Metropolis novel & screen play. Lang directed the film.

Just to elaborate on what others have already said, the Metropolis anime is based on Tezuka's old manga. Tezuka himself was inspired by the classic B&W film, but IIRC he didn't even see the film - he only saw a picture of a scene, but that was enough to inspire him to write the manga! :)

So no, the Metropolis anime doesn't have much to do with the Fritz Lang film because even the Tezuka manga doesn't have much to do with it.

Yes, but the ending seems very familiar.

One scene especially reminded me of Battle Angel Alita / Gunnm, almost the same scene. ;)

I'll go out on alimb here and say yes, heh. Actually, it's one of the best animated movies I have personally ever seen, but that's just my opinion of it (duh  ) I can highly reccomend picking it up if you want to.
