View Full Version : This Week In Comics: 04-21-04
Welcome to This Week In Comics for Apr. 21st - Apr. 27th, 2004.
For those who are new: Every week there is a thread titled "This Week In Comics" in the Comic Book Culture Forum. Here you can discuss the material you've bought and talk about comics in general (news you've read on comic news sites, the state of the industry in general, upcoming issues you're excited about, etc.). If it's potentially spoilerific, then use your common sense and cover the text with the spoiler code (or provide spoiler space).
If you have any feedback/comments/suggestions... just contact your friendly neighborhood comic moderators!

THE FLASH 208
-I especially liked this issue, better than 207. I still wish that Porter was doing the covers, and I'm still kinda annoyed by how Turner draws Bart (both here and in the Turner cover of Teen Titans 1). I mean, Porter draws Jay and Bart so well in this issue. Another thing is that Geoff writes Bart better in The Flash than he does over in Teen Titans, which I still can't understand. I found it interesting that said Turner cover of Teen Titans 1 can be found in the background of page 17. Other than the qualm about the cover, I thought this was an excellent issue. A
GREEN LANTERN 175
-There's numerous good and bad things about this issue, but many of them are spoilers. I was kind of interested as to how this issue could warrant a $3.50 pricetag if it was nothing more than a double-sized ending to "Wanted". I've found out, and I don't think I like it. D+
FANTASTIC FOUR 512
- At first, I was a little unsure after I saw this would be a mostly comedic issue, but then I realized that just because the recent attempts at humor I've read over in Batman's "Hush" and Superman/Batman's "World's Finest" suck doesn't mean that all superhero humor sucks. Spider-Man came off a like as a jerk at times but it was all fine. The page with Spider-Man's thoughts as Johnny talked was hilarious. The back-up was kinda "Meh." The art didn't compare to 'Ringo's. Without the back-up, it would probably be an A but I gotta make it an A- because of it.

SUPERMAN BATMAN 9 — I am prepared to give $50 to the person who can tell me why Michael Turner insisted first on drawing Kara in that outfit that had the shirt-with-the-built-in-underwear and had to show us that it had built in underwear, and then drew Kara in other clothes that showed a very clearly visible thong. Is that all women are to him? Thongs and underwear? What a reject. Please just leave DC Comics and stick to your sexist garbage. B- (Still not as bad as issues 3-7)That's not as bad as 8 'lets see how many times we can show Kara naked without actually showing anything.'
So anways, here what I got. (month behind as always.)
Superman Batman 8 - First off, I don't like Turner's artwork. But, the writing was, this issue wasn't that bad. But ANOTHER Supergirl doesn't sit well with me. Guess I'll just see how this pans out.
Justice League Adventures - Piece of garbace. This was an uninspired piece of trash.
Batman Year One TPB - Thank GOD for something good to read!

I picked up Batman/Superman #'s 8 & 9 and Hulk: Gray #6 (of 6).

Again, how many times has Loeb said that he crafts these arcs to help accomodate the artist, and this run is displaying Turner's talent of drawing scantally clad women right outta the gate. I totally agree that he's taking these renderings of sexy women a little too far, particularly around the waist for some reason. Jim Lee's run displayed his talent of drawing the bottoms of shoes, and Michael Turner's run will most likely test how low he can draw pants on women.
Aside from his tastes in style, I thought he's done a good job so far. I'm not familiar with his work, so I'm picking up his style as I go. I loved when I turned to the starting page of the Furies battle, those top shots of Apokylips and Granny Goodness are phenomenal, no doubt about it. Totally sets the tone for the scene, and no surprise here, the Furies are set to battle a scantally clad challenger. It's a nice prelude to Darkseid, sets him up for the future a little.
All the business with the Amazons and whatnot, eh, I wasn't too involved. No surprise that Wonder Woman's in the mix, gotta give Turner something to draw.
LOL. Y'know something else, Jeph Loeb must have a wierd obsession with Krypto the Superdog, first he appeared in "Hush" then got brough up here....
Hmmmm Batman Superman...BS..........yep that's about it.
