I've been checking out several posts about the possible CN special on Christmas Eve, and here's what I think will happen.

1.I do strongly believe that this special will air(at press time nothing is defitne from CN)on Dec 24.

2.This is the type of thing Cartoon Network needs to do, if this program "DOES" air, then CN can be considered the true leader in animation, which they badly need to do, right after the big June Bugs mess with the TV viewers

3."Silent Cartoon Night"(I think is the name of the special) should be an all night affair, not just an hour or two.I personally don't want to see a "Flinstone's Christmas" or Have A Smurfy Christmas" instead of this silent cartoon special.

4.Silent toon stars I would love to see on this special, would be like this:Felix The Cat, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, Koko The Clown, Bobby Bumps, Krazy Kat, Col. Heeza Liar, Mutt And Jeff, Aesop's Fables, Unnatural History, and Gertie The Dinosaur.Make this a cartoon special that will make die hard cartoon fans wanting more.

5.If the show airs, and gets great ratings, then CN might consider making it (the silent toons) a regular weekly series.

6.But for now we have to be patient, we will be the very first ones to find out if this program will be a go from either Jerry Beck or our friend at CN, Mr. Gak.Mayve within the next few weeks we'll learn if this historical special will air, and if it indeed does air, I will have my VCR all set up for this event.

What about you guys?

I would LOVE to see a silent cartoon marathon.

I'd especially like to see some Winsor McCay, Felix, Alice, Koko, and other famous silent cartoons.

It would be neat if they showed the first cartoon ever made...Humorous Phases of funny faces.

This is sorta like my post, but are Pink Panther and Wile Coyote/ Road Runner considered silent cartoons? Because CN owns the rights to the Pink Panther and they never air it!

They should show a night of animated music videos like Beatles' Yellow Submarine, and I don't know if Pink Floyd's the Wall is animated or not. That's a topic for another thread. :)

Cartoon Network doesn't own the UA/Pink Panther cartoons anymore.United Artists has the sole rights to the entire film library has no plans to release the films on tv or video/dvd.

I did forget to mentioned that if this special will air, it would only be "TRUE" silent cartoons made before the sound era.

When did this happen???? No woinder I havent been seeing Ant & The Aardvark and PP on Acme Hour in so long. i figured they had migrated to boomerang!

Why on earth wont they let CN air them and just sit on them like that?

I thought I heard that MGM owned the rights to PP. I also heard it airs on Boomerang in England, but I live in the US, so I'm not sure.

It all happened when Ted Turner lost his rights to his film library including the Pink Panther cartoons. That was the reason why CN took the Pink Panther off of their tv roster. It wasn't because CN didn't want to air them anymore it's because the United Artists bought back the rights to the cartoon library,.

I think the "silent cartoon night" idea is a great one. I'd love to see a collection like you describe!
Put me down as a vote in favor!

...But...
Is there much hope for this happening? Are there people lobbying for it behind the scenes in Cartoon Network? Do you have some "inside" info you can share? I guess I'm just looking for a glimmer of hope... ;)

After all, the last news I heard CN was planning (and I quote) "24 straight hours of our best holiday toons like The Jetsons, The Flintstones, The Smurfs, the Grinch, and many more!" on the 24th...

Nelson is correct. Cartoon Network no longer has the television rights to the Pink Panther cartoons (or Ant and the Aardvark, The Inspector, Roland and Rattfink, etc.). Those cartoons are controlled by MGM/United Artists. There *is* a DVD of Pink Panther cartoons currently available, it's called JET PINK.

As an aside, I have many of the Pink Panther cartoons and am looking for some of the others, if anyone is interested in trading or gettting a copy of a hard to find episode. Check my link below.

Love those non-BW, silent Pinks.
Like I tell my wife, talking is overrated.

You can download the cartoon from http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/oahtml/oachron.html

It is not all that exciting, but it is still interesting in that you get to see how darn primitive it was.

If you're lucky, you can still find some Pink Panther videos around too. I just bought one at K-Mart a couple of weeks ago for 2.99

Like everyone else, I'd be thrilled to see the silent cartoon special. The silents I've seen have mostly been great.

I would love to see some silent cartoons air but not all night.

I kinda like sitting and watching "The Grinch" "ToonHeads:Xmas special" and "A Smurfy Christmas" for the billionth time.

Watch these cartoons on Christmas eve re-minds me of when I was little and watching those cartoons while waiting for santa to come :D :D

Yeah, me too hippetyhopper, but I hope they have more variety this year. Last year they played the Flintstones and Scooby specials over and over.

And a great way to add to the variety is with Silent Cartoon Night! An hour special would work well! Too much would probably get a little boring. I'd love to see a silent cartoon show on every week, I just think that more than an hour or 2 would be overkill. And there is no way that they would make it an all night thing since the idea of just one special is probably very controversial (for CN execs anywho).

As I argued a few months back they really need to have more classic Xmas toons, the little that they show is not enough. But I am preaching to the converted I guess.
