I was looking at my family tree the other day (it's quite large and intimidating  ) and noticed that a friend of mine was actually related to me.

It seems our great-grandparents were related. So, what does that make us? We've been trying to figure it out for a while and are totally lost. Thanks!

Depends on how your great-grandparents were related... probably it makes you second or third cousins...

that's what i was going to say. if your great grandparents were siblings, that'd actually make you like sixth cousins. the same thing happened with me and this other guy in my grade. my great-grandma and his great-something were brother and sister. can't say the guy is a great friend of mine but sometime's it's just interesting to know

You both must have families that have lived in the same areas for along time...

Exactly but I didn't know quite how to word it.

Long distance cousins it looks like but going by great-grand parents, they're great grands kids to them. *obvious alert!!* :p

That's weird.

I have a very crazy last name, that's not that common, so I don't think I'd meet someone and not know (if that makes any sense!). I searched whitepages.com for the name in every state, and there are only 142 or something like that. I know that I have a great aunt in LA that's a psychic, and I have a few great aunts and uncles that live in WI just like me. I've only met one though.
