View Full Version : Bad News Detective Conan fans, Funi is up to their old tricks again

FUNimation has announced the release date for its first Detective Conan (which it is releasing as Case Closed in the U.S.) SKUs -- August 24th. Three SKUs will be released on that date. Volume One will include episodes #1-#4, and Volume Two will include episodes #53-#55, both at $19.98. The Starter Set will include both volumes and a collector's box.
Looks like they are going to start skipping episodes again to screw over fans. Is there something seriously wrong with them? Not to mention they are putting 3 episodes on a disc (not including Vol1) for a 300+ current tv series. WTF are they thinking? Funi is truly the worst company ever, and the money hungry.
Jeez.
Well, at least I'm sure Detective Conan will bomb on AS.

Wait a second this doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means. Perhaps due to the length of the series they're releasing the first 52 episodes and the second 52 episodes simultaneously with they're own starter boxes.

Detective Boy Conan is VERY episodic. This isn't as big a problem think, DM.

Oh come now. It's obvious why they are doing this. They've done it with DBZ for years...
The first 52 episodes will be on Adult Swim so they wont try to get most of that on DVD. Instead they will get some of it on DVD (or all of it, but slowly) while focusing on the next 52 or so.
It'll be heck for people trying to follow the show without Adult Swim... but to those who do watch it on AS it should work out "alright".
Or maybe they will just release both seasons at the same time.

Well i just hope they are able to get the episodes below 52 by the time Adult Swim is finished with them, because it seems that they are having some issues regarding the DBZ thing, too many episodes at once and they are skipping to get ahead for those who may have seen the Japanses version, of coruse that is a long shot and stuff.

As Hyper Luigi noted this is only the episodes for the initial DVD release and says nothing of how episodes will air on Adult Swim.
As for the episode count, we don't know if it will be 3 per disc. Right now one disc has four episodes and the other has three. We'll need more information before we know how the majority of discs will be released.

The japanese release was kinda weird as well. (like this guy says (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=447412&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1)) This is becuase some episodes take a break and resume the particular arc many episodes later (or something like that). It could be possible that this is the reason for that. Of course I haven't seen DC (or CC), so I'll leave that to the people that do. Also, this doesn't neccesarily mean that they are skipping episodes 5-53, it could be possible that the next volume will contain episodes 5-9 or someting. Unless Funimation says something, I won't assume anything.
As for the release, it's just like YYH. 4 or 3 episodes per disc. If I were anyone else here, I'd wait for Funi to release boxsets (which is super cheap).

According to ANN (go there yourself lol), Case Closed will be aired in order when it premieres on AS. That, and the reason for the out of order releases is to give fans a look at episodes that have not aired on TV.

Um... WHERE was this announced? I definitely didn't get an announcement from FUNi about it...
...SKUs?
Wait, what's with this episode skipping nonsense?
And besides that... 3 episodes per DVD is practically standard. What were you expecting, royal Fruits Basket treatment? They changed the name for god's sake.

I must say, I am dissapointed with Funimation. I am a pro-Funi person and have defended them in any way possible, but this is just stupid. I just hope that they actually release episode 5+ startting on ep 3...
Now, of course I can't help but defend Funimation on this as well...I can't defend Funi for releasing the series out of order, but when it all comes down to it, the whole thing is going to be released anyway. I'm just not buying as it comes out becuase I'm pretty sure that Funi will release boxsets. As for the episode count, (for vol. 1 and 2) 4 eps and 3 eps add up to 7 (duh), and with the price of the two volumes together, it adds up to $40. So, 7 episodes for $40, SAME AS FRUITS BASKET.

I really do think that a lot of the problems with this release are the fault of the Japanese licensor. The name changes and episode counts specifically. Apparently they are being forced to use that new logo. FUNimation is probably bending right over in this deal.
While I never had any intention of picking this series up, I hope for the sake of the fans that FUNi at least provides reversable covers featuring the original logo.

Just like how DBGT was going to air in order, but didn't.
I'm sorry, but Funi is really dumb when it comes to releasing long series. Fine, if they want to release 26 ep series with 3 eps a disc, let them, but if it is a long (and this is a looooooooong series) series, that is just plain rediculous. I mean 80+ vols is the reason I refuse to even touch DBZ. I'd be better off just buying the bootlegs of the remastered R2 rips just so I don't have to support Funi. You would think they would have done what they are doing with Ultraman Tiga, or even Fruits Basket. After hearing this, my girlfriend is very worried to how Kodocha is going to be treated.

Adult Swim is showing #1-52, FUNi is selling #53-104. What's to complain about?
They're not airing and being released on the same day. Case Closed starts May 24th, and will reach episode 52 slightly before or on August 19th. A week before #53-55 is released on DVD. Makes sense, DON'T IT.

Astonishingly, Matt Wilson has given the most rational view on this situation. Also, I don't think FUNimation is stupid enough to actual market episodes 53-55 as "volume 2". I just hope they can kick up the episode counts.
Also, Kodocha is being marketed towards a completely different audience. It won't be screwed over. Trust me.

Bingo.
Kodocha is another prestige title. The TV version might get cut up a bit, but you can bet the DVDs are gonna be nice (funi better atleast match the japanese 4-5 per disc episode counts though.)

Yes, Detective Conan is quite episodic (or even "arc-ish" with small case arcs). Once you have the background in the initial episodes, you can pretty much wing it in any story arc. The series didn't last (actually, still ongoing) 300+ eps by moving the essential plot development too fast! :D
What I'm actually waiting to see is those little omake at the end of episodes. I'm sure fans of Adult Swim would like those! :D

You can rationalize all you want, the fact remains that Funi is screwing people over again. Hell, all of DBZ should've been on DVD uncut and subbed a year ago, yet we are still waiting for the best saga to be fully released (Cell Games). As from Ultraman Tiga, I have been boycotting Funi products. The last DVD (before Tiga V1) I bought from them was the Bardok special, and that was during its release month.
And you know what, I bet if they knew how popular FB would've been, they would've made it an 8 disc format.

I'm mad about the wait for the Cell Games saga as well, but they aired on TV years ago and isn't it better to occasionally put out something new to watch instead of just what has aired? They've only done it with the Dragonball franchise and Conan thus far... YYH hasn't had that issue.

Bingo. (Matt deserves a trophy filled with steakums... or Flash MX.)
Fruits Basket is an excellent release (perhaps one of the best for any anime.)
Blue Gender is a very good release.
Tenchi GXP is also a very good release.
Kiddy Grade is also very good release.
Yu Yu Hakusho is very solid release.
Perhaps most importantly, they seized the day where every other anime distributor in America had completely and totally given up, and figured how to license Kodocha, a title that had been sought after by US fans for nearly a decade.
So, they are releasing episodes that occur right the end of CN's set right after CN finishes it's intial run. Sounds like a service to the fans to me, and excellent business sense too.

Actually the only saga I want on DVD is Cell Games, I can care less about everything else.
ANyway, it isn't just DBZ. The only 2 DVDs they have done right was Tiga and FB. YYH is 112 eps, but there are only 3 eps a DVD out for it, making it rediculous to get! Then you go the 8 vol format for Kiddy Grade and GXP. I'm sorry, but 8 volumes is done. We are in a 6 disc era, and it still pisses me off that Bandai is following ADV and putting GitS on 7 discs instead of 6. At least they are doing .hack//Legend of the Twlight Bracelet right with 3 volumes. Maybe Funi should at least follow ADV and cut down on a volume. OH, and how about cutting down their prices? A series as long as DBZ and DC should not be more than $15 for a measly 3 episodes. That's it, $5 an episode, and that should be no more.

And you can walk into any walmart or target or kmart in the US, and get funi's 3 episode per dvds at 14.99 a piece or less. Best Buy and Circut City are the same way usually. If you don't want to go to a real world store, plenty of online retailers will cut an equivelent if not better deal. Why? Because virtually noone goes with list price these days. If you're patient, you can wait for the boxset and get the discs down to 6-8 bucks a volume. Therefore, the only truth that your arguement holds, is that it's a shelf space issue.

And yes, shelf space is important. Infact, a series that is over 300 should not have anything less than 5 eps on a DVD.

I don't know why everyone's always so defensive of Funimation-they're hardly the best company out there. Also, YYH's releases aren't the best example, at least in terms of the DT box set- the DVDs are out, what's taking so long?

I don't know why everyone's always so defensive of Funimation-they're hardly the best company out there. Many people's perception of FUNimation comes from Season 3 Dragonball Z- one of their first jobs. FUNimation of 2004 ain't the same as FUNimation of 1999. Fruits Basket, Dragonball, these are highlights of FUNimation.

Funimation alway slikes to make releases of episodes that haven't been shown yet. they're doing it with Fruits Basket, Dragonball GT, Tenchi Muyo GXP, and Kiddy Grade. Previously they did it with DBZ and Blue Gender. This is no different than usual. As for using Ultraman Tiga and DB DVD's as example, 4Kids decided the format for Ultraman Tiga, and Dragonball wasn't done that way (which is considered Box Sets by Funimation) until they got to the King Piccolo saga. They're doing the same format most other DVD companies do (3 to 4 episodes a DVD, and sometimes 5), so I'm not going to complain. I think it's a great idea because they can gain more money by releasing the future episodes after people have recorded all the previous ones on AS. They'll probably release the official V. 2 and 2 Pt. 2 after that within the next 2 months max, and continue on that way until they have caught the full series up to date on DVD releases. then they can go straight to 2 new releases each month until they finish the series.

Look at Dragonball. Anywhere from ten to seventeen episodes per 2 disc special uncut edition box set.
Look at Fruits Basket. Six or seven episodes per disc.
Look at Tenchi Muyo GXP. Volume one has five.

K-Fart. How witty. But not. (I'm becoming Matt Wilson, I can feel it. ;))
Anyway, last Target I was in was only carrying the uncut stuff. The last Walmart I was in had the edited Hakusho, but had the totally uncut DBZ. It also had Kenshin, Galaxy Angel and Vampire Hunter D. Best Buy, Fry's and Circut City have about the same prices as Target and other similar chains usually, and are also all up on the uncut versions, and the internet usually does an even better job of bringing the savings home.
And you can still be patient and wait for the inevitable boxset for even more savings action.
And if you're so up on shelf space, buy some slimcases.
In all honesty, the only places I've seen the uncut versions are at Suncoast and fye. And they usually charge $30 a DVD unless there's a sale or something.
