The Popeye Show brings classics to AS. =D

Also, PLEASE don't post in this thread just to say "Popeye shouldn't be on AS" or something of that nature. We have a thread for that. >=o

Didn't they used to run Late Nite Black & White after AS? I'm a sucker for classics, and hopefully we can see some banned toons now. A man shooting a baby with a shotgun, now that's something you couldn't get away with today.

Ya know, tonight's Popeye shorts were made in the 1930s, yet the animation is better than any of the williams street originals.

This probably wasn't the best episode to start with, though the third short does have some politically incorrect material.

I hope that next week AS has a card explaining Popeye's importance (75th anniversary), demographic, and uncut b&w nature.

I saw a lot of hatin' on the AS.com boards. By people under 20. What a surprise.

Sounds like there will be some flamming tonight at those boards, yet I don't mind about Popeye since it also makes the TTTP quite happy that Adult Swim is doing this, but to others, it maybe a riot that they m,ay start against Willams Street for this stunt.

I had missed this episode the first time around. Definitely a few historical moments with the last Black and White Popeye and the last short with the ship doors title card. I think I liked Child Psyko(however it was spelled) the best. It was a nice change of pace, while still feeling like a Popeye short. The rest of the family got the focus more than usual and I don't recall any spinach. It really shows Popeye is more than just a guy who fights Bluto (sp?) each episode.

While what I thnk of Popeye being on AS is what Landstander already mentioned not to say, it wasn't bad watching Popeye. I haven't seen the show in a long time. While the jokes aren't over-the-top or adult, I did find myself laughing a couple times and finding myself interested in seeing some older animation (isn't this the only "real classic" show that is still on CN?) I'd take Popeye over Baby Blues, Ripping Friends/Spumco, Lewis Lectures, and Penguins Behind Bars anyday!

I think it's great that Popeye is now on AS. It fits into the demographic and it's not for childeren, why is there a need to complain?

I think these were some pretty good selections for the first time around (likes "The Hypnutist"). =D Looks like I now have a reason to watch AS all the way through now.

Good episodes. I noticed a PG rating came on the screen during the Hypnutist episode after Popeye said he was a "jackass", of course meaning donkey in this case. Bah, such foolishness.

Here are some detailed synopsis of the cartoons:

"The Hyp-Nut-Tist" (Seymour Kneitel and Roland Crandall, 1935)
Popeye and Olive go to a stage show were a hypnotist (Bluto) is doing his act. He decides to use Popeye and Olive as the "assistants" of his tricks, by turning them into various animals.

"Child Psykolojiky" (Bill Nolan and Joe Oriolo, 1941)
Poopdeck Pappy says Sweepea should be punished for misbehaving, but Popeye insists on getting him a reward for telling the truth. Popeye leaves in order to buy Sweepea a toy, but leaving Pappy alone with Sweepea is clearly not a good idea...

"Cartoons Ain't Human" (Seymour Kneitel, 1943)
Popeye makes his own cartoon to entertain Olive and his nephews, but you know the deal with cartoons, sometimes they can get so real you can almost feel them!

A nice show since it features many different types of cartoons. First short is the classic "Popeye must save Olive and beat up Bluto" formula, which never fails. Second short leaves Popeye on one side for most of the cartoon and focuses on Pappy and Sweepea, a nice ocassion to get to know the characters better. The final act is an extremely fast-paced, chock-full of gags short, with a frantic music score that suits the cartoon (both of them!) beautifully.

BTW, this particular episode got away with an old man firing a gun at a baby, and a blackface gag. That fits AS quite well, I think.

I'm still upset about CN not caring about Popeye's 75th.

for all who wonder how it got here -

Hey guys,

I scheduled the run of Popeyes, and the reason we're skipping episode 11 is because it contains color cartoons and we wanted to stick with classic black and white. We skipped episodes 1 - 8 for the same reason.

If Popeye does well, we'll run more, including the color episodes. However, the idea was to give it a *short* run in Adult Swim because it's the 75th anniversary of a cartoon we all love - it's just a brief tribute, and we probably aren't going to air many episodes.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if they made a modern Popeye cartoon. Ya know, now that we know the whole spinach being that good for you was a science flub, and what with gays in the military and everything... ;)

Honestly though I wish people would watch and appreciate Popeye. I grew up with it when I was little, was great fun. Too bad it seems like kids that age now seem to like more flash than substance.

So it looks like someone at CN is indeed attempting to celebrate Popeye's birthday, even if it's brief. Hopefully, if this is successful, then other classic CN programming targetted for adults (i.e. Toonheads) may become part of Adult Swim as well (with it airing during the 2-5 portion of the Sunday block).

I must be one of the only 16 years olds who like's Popeye. When CN first came out I was kid and I loved all these old cartoons shown on that great new network. I remember spending many a sleepless night (I can't remember if I really couldn't sleep or if it was just an excuse to watch cartoons) in the living room, on the floor, covered in blankets, eveyone else asleep, watching Popeye cartoons.

I wish CN would show more of the classics. When I watched these toons I didn't have the vaugest notion that many were a half a century old or older. They're timeless; and kids today would still enjoy them.

As kids, my friends, cousins, and I watched Popeye on TV a lot way back in the 80s and enjoyed it. One of our first games on the NES Famicom was a Popeye game. I don't watch too much of it now though; probably watched it too much back then that I just got tired of it. Still, I appreciate it.

Speaking (or, rather, typing) as someone who's big on both the AS and TTTP ends of the TZ spectrum, I'm really glad the Popeye Show is on AS now. I hope it makes it to regular showings (and Toon Heads as well).

It'll be great when the show with "Happy Birthdaze" in it airs (not sure which number, or if there's a color cartoon in it), because the dark ending is a natural for the block with all the WS shows on it. I've loved that one since my childhood in the early '70s!

At least, a couple of years ago, Universal pushed Woody Woodpecker on Japanese TV to promote the new Universal Studios theme park in Kansai.
