Rumor has it that ROTJ: TOC will be widescreen, in 1.85:1 aspect ratio! Like we needed another reason to pick up this disc! The whole story is in the newspage.

That sounds great! You know, I dont think I've ever seen a cartoon in wide-screen format before. It should be cool. Now if they'd start releasing BB eps in widescreen that would be sweet.

what would be cooler is if they did a theatrical release of it!

Don't you have Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on DVD? If not, shame on you! ;)

MOTP widescreen isn't really "widescreen"..they chop off heads (check the DVD board and one of the Hot Topic Q's for comparision images).
Anyway, I'm pumped about ROTJ:Un-cut..but in WIDESCREEN? That's even better...will WB actually deliver?

Oh! Thanks for reminding me Clayface. I'd planned to get it when it came out, but totally forgot about it, because I didnt have a DVD player. But now I've got a computer that plays DVDs, and I'll prolly be getting an actual player this christmas. So how is it in widescreen?

Eh, I'm not so sure about MOTP not being widescreen - they used the same trick lots of widescreen animated movies are done with - "film" the thing full screen and place the bars on the top and bottom after. From what I remember, it was in "widescreen" when I saw it in the theaters, and I never noticed any heads getting chopped off or any other problems with it. Been a while since I've watched it though.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they did with ROTJ.

Thanks BB. Actually I think the full screen looks better than the wide-screen for MOTP.

and as for the MOTP widescreen and full screen..I'll probably watch the full screen from now on..knowing that more is shown there. But, otherwise..widescreen ALL THE WAY! :)

I still prefer the widescreen format - you're not really losing anything with the widescreen version. As is pointed out in the other thread, the animation is made so that nothing important is occurring in the top and bottom spaces that are blacked out, and the movie was originaly intended to be viewed in the widescreen format.

widescreen or not...it's coming !
Actually, I'm not a fan of widescreen. Even though you're not losing anything, it feels like you are with 2/3 of the screen black. But 1:85:1 is what the MiB DVD and Babylon 5 on the Sci-Fi Channel are in, and I can handle that.
It's coming!!

I never felt I was only watching 2/3 of the screen. When I know it's a widescreen movie and I can only see it in full frame, I keep wondering what I am missing on the sides, and that is far more annoying than any "black bars."

Actually, I remember that waaaaaaaay back when ROTJ was still being produced and the idea of it ending up edited wasn't even a kindle in our minds Bruce Timm had said that the DVD was going to have widescreen in the first place. I remembered that. Even after news about the edits right before it came out hit, like a trsuting fool I thought it was still going to have widescreen. I was actually surprised Christmas day when I watched it and it wasn't. Does anyone else remember this? Maybe that another reason why this rumor hit.
I actually wish they'd release the Pokemon movies widescreen. Pokemon 2000 sucks in pan-and-scan. Iron Giant came widescreen. They even had a widescreen VHS which I was gonna buy right up until I got my DVD player.

I remember that! I was all excited to be getting a widescreen version. Man, now I really hope they do a widescreen edition. It's gonna look so amazing if it is.
And welcome to the Boards, superman complex.

Oh never mind I see that it's 10. At least this totally useless post gets me closer. Or is that cheating.
Now I have to decided what avatar to use.

For anyone who is still unconvinced about the benefits of watching a movie in widescreen vs pan and scan, check out the Die Hard Ultimate Edition DVD. There is actually a feature that compares one of the scenes in widescreen version versus pan and scan. As soon as I saw that, I was sold on widescreen. :)
Then last week I was at my girlfriend's house and West Wing was on, and as many of you know, NBC has been showing some of their programs in a widescreen format. Mindy (my girlfriend) was saying that she thought it was cool that they were doing that, it gave it a more cinematic feel... and her mom got all pissed. She's like, "I hate widescreen! Remember that, Mister Director" (I'm a film student) "When you make your movies, I hate widescreen, they cut off the tops of everyone's heads, you miss half the picture." I started to protest, but she would have none of it. Yikes, some people just don't get it.
One more interesting tidbit, I don't know how many of you have widescreen TVs, but I thought this was kind of funny... if you try to watch a "full screen" movie on a widescreen TV, you'll get your "black bars" (if that's what you want to call them) on the side of the picture instead of on the top and bottom. Kind of amusing to think about.

"Just remember that, Mister Director! I hate widescreen." That's gotta be the funniest freakin' thing I've ever heard in my life. Like they make theatrical movies in full screen. Hahahaha!!! That's gold to put in one of your movies. No, no! Let me put it in one of my movies. It's called "The Indie" and it's a movie about movies and Hollywood driving a poor filmmaker insane(literally, he really snaps Brazil-style at the end). That's the perfect joke for it.

First, bonus points for bringing The West Wing into this.
Second, many people on the WW forums say the show really does feel more like a movie with the widescreen format.
If widescreen can make a great show into a movie, what can it do for a great movie?
I can't wait for the DVD.
(And this from someone who's not a fan of widescreen. Maybe I'm in denial about this widescreen thing. :p )

I think widescreen just enhances everything. I think it'll be a definate plus to the movie. I just hope they don't place black bar sover it (a la MOTP) and make it ACTUALLY widescreen.
And I've been enjoying how recent shows have been going widescreen...

Eh, I'm not so sure about MOTP not being widescreen - they used the same trick lots of widescreen animated movies are done with - "film" the thing full screen and place the bars on the top and bottom after. It depends. Quite a few animated films are animated at 1.66:1, matted to 1.85:1 theatrically, and cropped to 1.33:1 for television/VHS. The matting in MOTP doesn't negatively affect the presentation, at least in my opinion. The widescreen framing doesn't seem unnecessarily tight and no important information is lopped off. MOTP is an unusual case, given its originally-DTV origins, but I prefer maintaining theatrical composition, even if 'more' information is shown in the open-matte version.
I would flip if ROTJ were released in anamorphic widescreen. I was impressed with the video quality of the current disc, but I wouldn't mind squeezing out an additional 33% resolution and seeing the original cut of the film...
