Did anyone watch the Concert Saturday night on VH1? I was just wondering what everyone thought of it. I thought it turned out pretty darn good. Though kind of long, it had a lot of great moments. And of course, a great cause/theme.

Yea I saw it and it was pretty good especially the end when they all sing "Let it Be" with Paul McCartney

I thought it was wonderfully done. It was funny (for the most part) and the music was great. Although there were a few technical difficulties, and some of those interviews were painful to watch. They really should have taken some lessons from MTV....much less technical issues there.

I'm a huge McCartney fan, so I was pretty excited about seeing him. And the Who. Wow! They were just incredible. Maybe it was just the excitement of the moment, but to me they sounded just like on record. "Who are you" and "Won't Get fooled again" are great songs, and the latter actually turned out to be a perfect choice for the occassion.
You're right, Nightwing, there were a couple surprising technical difficulties. At the moment, all I can remember is the microphone going out when Ethridge (sp?) played. But there were some problems. And how about some of those ackward moments, like when Hilary got booed. That was so painful to watch and completely uncalled for.
But overall, very enjoyable. It was a pretty massive undertaking, but done quite well.

I didn't think much of the technical difficulties. I didn't like much of the comedy, most of it just fell flat except for the excellent appearance by Opera Man! But I'm not really a fan of most of the other comedians who appeared (or Howard Stern) so maybe that's why Sandler was the only one who amused me. The films were good though, Seinfeld's and Allen's are the ones I remember best.
There were a lot of great bands out there. I thought it was great when Jagger did that "Cuz I Miss You" (guessing at the name) and got the audience participating, he is still full of energy at his old age. And so many other great names like The Who (I also thought that Behind Blue Eyes was appropriate as well as Won't Get Fooled Again). I was kind of surprised at the appropriateness of Taylor's line "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground." I wasn't so crazy about the newer groups, but oh well, at least they were trying to help so I couldn't get too mad at them.

Interesting that all the artists played classics and covers except Elton John who seemed to miss the point and played his brand new single. Nice exposure that Elton. I hope the event has been a nice promotion for your single. I hope it does well and continues to make you a crediable asset to your record company...
Am I just being cynical? Perhaps I am. I've just seen too many media types making the most of the recent disasters (newspapers with the intent to scare people wittless so they feel the need to buy, erm, more papers). Now anything related to the current crisis I can't help but see people or companies out to make money from it...
Am I too cynical? Apologies to Elton if I am . . . . :)

I think McCartney did a new single, plus that "Freedom" song. There should be a CD with tracks from the special out sometime soon. There was also talk of a DVD of the last special and I think this one might go to DVD too.

Perhaps I am over suspicious of celeb motivations, however, they do sell records and these records I assume will make money for those who have lost through this crisis, so who can complain about that (apart, of course from me, of course ;) )

I recorded and IT FREAKING CUT OFF RIGHT AFTER JIM CARREY! oh, i was so sad. i missed paul mccartney. :'( ::i KNEW i should've stopped recording when those intermission commercials came on!:: *sigh*
i was very dissappointed that backstreet boys (my secret passion! :p ) didn't perform all that well. they looked GAY and sang HORRBILY and i thought they'd sing more meaningful songs than those retarded cheesy love songs they sing. eh. and they didn't dance!! (sorry if i offended any hardcore bsb fan, don't hate me. admit it, they weren't fun to watch) i loved watching billy joel and janet jackson, too.
anyway, it was long, but i liked it. it was a good concert, and it's a good tribute to all those police and firemen in NY. i wish my tape didn't run out, though.

Aw, crud. I missed it. At least the stuff I did see from the news evet that ran a story on it seemed pretty good. Anyways, I also want to thank them for raising money to help NYC...
...did Micheal Jackson perform, or is he still making his own tribute? But if he actually went along, I'd be amazed!

McCartney did say the money from sales of the single would be going toward helping the crisis victims, so that seems appropriate. The song itself seemed right for the occassion as well.
I didn't see Elton's performance, so I can't comment on that.

I loved how the Who played. They haven't played in awhile. I was beginning to think that they split up from eachother. All in all it was a great show. Only cuz the Who and Michael J Fox were there.

The CD of it is due out next month, and I would bet the video and DVD won't be far behind, so you will get your show yet. Just hope it's not a "best of" thing and shows it all on the DVD or video.

So why did Hilary Clinton get booed? New Yorkers loved her at the last election. What did she do to turn them against her?

I'm not sure. That kind of stunned me. Anybody know the reasons for the audience response?

my local (read: out of NY) classic rock station broadcasted the concert. since then, they've been playing this one soundbite over and over:
A firefighter who got up on stage and declared, "Osama bin Laden, you can kiss my royal...Irish...***!"
(Actually, I'm listening right now, and the DJ just said, "Mike Moran [the firefighter], that's true New York. Proud of ya, Mike.")
I laugh every time they play it. That just rocks.

Yeah, that was hilarious when he said that. That was better than anything the comedians tried to do. I laughed again when he came back and showed his face to the camera and said something like "And this is my face, b****." That was great. That little speech of his was enough on its own to make the whole thing worthwhile.
As far as Hillary goes, I think that it was a very close election, so maybe that explains it. The half of the voters that voted for the other guy probably never liked her very much.

I thought she won by a landslide?

I've looked into it a bit and it seems that, like anything, it depends on how you look at the statistics. She didn't get many votes outside of NYC and lost most of the rest of the state. At least that's what I'm reading on the internet.
Anyways, I'm sure she has plenty of strong detractors.
Hilary got booed and Bill got cheered, lol. And everyone says Bill is the scumbag. I love him though, Id cheer him. And I thought the concert was excellent and needed to be that long. Im also a huge McCartney fan and I was a bit concerned how he would top all that applause the Who got from their EXPLOSIVE performance, but he always has that feeling to his music that makes everyone come together. I liked the new single, you could sorta obviously feel it was written for his new love, but my parents, who were my families original McCartney fans, really liked that Freedom song. I did too, I think he'd make a lot more off that as a new single to put the proceeds to the releif effort. Either way, he's gonna do great as usual and I can't wait to buy the CD. Overall Id say it had a great turnout, and those firemen really knew how to party....I think a few were putting back too many beers if ya know what I mean. But heck, they deserve to do anything to loosen up and have some fun after all they did to help NY out. Kudos to them. Infinite kudos actually.

There's kind of a "Lady Macbeth" aspect to her that I think rubs a lot of people the wrong way. She's a bit too nakedly ambitious for a lot of peoples' tastes, and it may have riled some emotions to see someone with those qualities at a charity event.

He was great. I'm laughing just thinking about it. Definitely one of the highlights of the concert.

I wasn't concerned until he was on stage. After "I'm Down," he really quieted things down and I kind of realized at that point that he might not be able to live up to expectations. Of course, that could've just been due to my own expectations. But yeah, I think his performance went well. "Let It Be" is the perfect song to get all the other performers involved in and is one of the greatest songs ever written. He definitely closed out the night well.
As for "Freedom," it does capture the spirit of the relief effort better, but its not as good of a song as the single. It worked well as a way of bringing everyone together to end the concert, but on it's own, I don't think it has enough to sell well. I could be wrong. I'd probably have to listen to the songs again. But that's what I'm thinking right now. I am excited about his new CD, though. I remember Paul saying it's close to 60 minutes, which is great. That's longer than his albums typically are.
